Introduction• The Millennium Development Goals are eight international

development goals that were officially established following the Millennium Summit of the United Nations in 2000, following the adoption of the United Nations Millennium Declaration. All 189 United Nations member states and at least 23 international organizations have agreed to achieve these goals by the year 2015. The goals are:

• 1.Eradicating extreme poverty and hunger• 2.Achieving universal primary education• 3.Promoting gender equality and empowering women• 4.Reducing child mortality rates• 5.Improving maternal health• 6.Combating HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases• 7.Ensuring environmental sustainability• 8.Developing a global partnership for development

What's the aim of the goal ?• Goal 8 aims to address the special needs of the Least Developed

Countries this includes quota-free access for Least Developed Countries.• Deal with the debt problems of developing countries through national

and international measures in order to make debt sustainable in the long term.

• The goal is aimed at developed countries to cut debts to undeveloped countries to help them develop

• In cooperation with pharmaceutical companies, provide access to affordable essential drugs in developing countries

• This goal says there must be more debt relief and fairer trade rules especially in agriculture to give poor farmers the chance to earn a decent living.

• •In co-operation with the private sector, make available the benefits of new technologies, especially information and communications.

Has the goal been met ?• With just 2.3 years until 2015 there is still less

aid money overall, with the poorest countries most adversely affected.

• The goal covers a range of aspirations, such as the aim to "develop further an open, rule-based, predictable, non-discriminatory trading and financial system" and "deal comprehensively with the debt problems of developing countries". However, unlike the other goals it doesn't include a list of specific time-bound targets, making it harder to hold rich countries to account.

• Unfortunately aid dropped in 2006 and 2007 which will have to be increased to $13 million to account for the earlier shortfalls.

• MDG 8 provides targets for better co ordination• Australia has worked with small islands

developing states in the pacific which shows an example of co ordination.

• To achieve the MDGs, we need to work together to ensure our help is well targeted

and effective.

Facts on the mdg’s• Statistics show currently 2.7 million people live in poverty.• Australia in co operation with 8 pacific island countries has recently

reviewed that since the Mdg’s have begun they have seen a decrease in improvements in some goals rather than an increase
