THE YOUNG INNOVATOR PRIZE

“ The Young Innovator Prize is part of Millennium Point Trust’s ambition to be socially relevant and engaged with the future of learning and creativity in Birmingham and beyond. I hope it inspires young people to study STEM subjects at university and encourages prominent organisations to support the next generation’s ambitions and ideas.” Philip Singleton, Chief Executive - Millennium Point

In November 2014, The Millennium Point Young Innovator Prize will launch - a new programme that will see Millennium Point sponsor a young person through an undergraduate degree at Birmingham City University in the Faculty of Computing, Engineering and the Built Environment. Additionally, the prize-winner will gain experience in the workplace through a summer placement with Millennium Point.

Millennium Point is a destination to experience science, technology and learning. As an independent charitable trust, Millennium Point’s mission is to enable a great place to experience the future. Located in Eastside, the city’s emergent Learning quarter, it is home to Thinktank Science Museum, Birmingham City University and Birmingham Metropolitan College.

THE YOUNG INNOVATOR PRIZE

With the youngest population of any city in Europe, Birmingham needs to act to ensure a generation is not ‘locked out’ of opportunities to learn. The Young Innovator Prize demonstrates one way in which organisations can support young and talented individuals.

In collaboration with STEMNET, Millennium Point has identified five schools in Birmingham whose Year 13 pupils would benefit most from financial assistance, creating an opportunity for a bright, driven student for whom higher education is financially challenging.

Schools will each nominate two students, with a total of ten students presenting in a live final. Their work will focus on areas of science, technology and engineering that will shape our future.

Millennium Point has also engaged with the British Science Association and the Association for Science Education who will provide support for the prize in this formative first year. The final will be held during British Science Week, 13-22 March 2015.

If successful in 2014-15, Millennium Point will run the Prize in future years - potentially with an open application process for schools in the region.

It is hoped that the prize will inspire many young people with a passion for science, technology and engineering for years to come.

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH BIRMINGHAM CITY UNIVERSITY

Millennium Point is delighted to partner with Birmingham City University’s Faculty of Computing, Engineering and the Built Environment (CEBE) to create this opportunity. Attracting more students to its industry-oriented degree courses than ever before, and expanding the subjects it offers to new territories such as Maths and Civil Engineering, CEBE is at the forefront of developing the practical skills and knowledge of young people in the region.www.bcu.ac.uk/cebe

CREATING OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE FUTURE

“ We are pleased to support this new prize from the Millennium Point Trust, which is aimed at providing opportunities for students from under-served communities to engage with science, enjoy science and continue to study science in the future. We look forward to seeing the project progress over the coming months and to the finale event, which will be held during British Science Week in March 2015.”

Katherine Mathieson, Director, British Science Association
