Miller Career & Technology Center Anna Webb-Storey, Ed.D., Principal Katy Independent School District March 4, 2016 Dear Student & Parent: With course selection underway at all Katy ISD high schools this letter provides you additional information about courses which will be available to students when they are juniors and/or seniors. Miller Career & Technology Center (MCTC) offers courses for juniors and seniors only. Advance planning is necessary for eligibility to apply for certain capstone courses in the future. Attached is information regarding our current courses as well as several courses we hope to offer in 2017-2018 when the build-out of our second floor is complete. The possible courses for 2017- 2018 are not yet listed in the course catalog, however 2016-2017 course information is available under the Student Tab-)Graduation Requirements on the district website. Please note Architecture, Health Science, Manufacturing Engineering, and STEM courses have pathways of prerequisites the student must take in order to enroll in an MCTC capstone course. Should you have questions regarding Endorsements and course requirements to graduate please contact your home campus counselor. Your home campus counselor will be able to help you plan for eligibility to available courses in the future by taking a sequence of courses over the next couple of years. With course selection underway at all Katy ISD high schools this letter provides you additionalinformation about courses which will be available to students when they are juniors and/orseniors. BUSINESS & INDUSTRY-CTE ENDORSEMENTOne way to earn a Business & Industry endorsement is through completion of four or more CTE credits, including at least twocourses in the same career cluster and at least one advanced CTE credit from within the specific career cluster. Listing of coursesdoes not guarantee the course will be taught.

Practicum in Architectural Design-Grades 11-12 (2 credits). Seniors will have priority placement.Architectural Design and Algebra II, or concurrent enrollment in Algebra II, are the prerequisites.Practicum in Architectural Design is an advanced course for the Architecture & Construction career cluster.

NOTE: Concepts of Engineering & TechnologyÿArchitectural Design will be the required prerequisites beginning 2018-2019.

Audio Engineering-Grades 11-12 (2 credits).Audio Engineering is an advanced course for the Arts, A/V Technology & Communications career cluster.Film I-Advanced A/V Production-Grade 11-12 (2 credits).Film II-Practicum in A/V Production-Grade 12 (2 credits). Film I is the prerequisite.Film II is an advanced course for the Arts, A/V Technology & Communications career cluster.

NOTE: Audio and Film students may try out for LAMBS (Live Action Media Broadcast System). The LAHBS crew is paid toprepare for and film Katy ISD football games.

Automotive Technology-Grades 11-12 (2 credits).Advanced Automotive Technology-Grade 12 (2 credits). Automotive Technology is the prerequisite.Advanced Automotive Technology is an advanced course for the Transportation, Distribution & Logistics careercluster.

• Cisco Computer Maintenance-Grades 11-12 (2 credits).Computer Maintenance is an advanced course for the Information Technology career cluster.

• Cisco Internetworking Technologies I-Grades 11-12 (2 credits). Algebra II or concurrent enrollment inAlgebra II is the prerequisite.Internetworking Technologies I is an advanced course for the Information Technology career cluster.

• Cisco Internetworking Technologies II-Grade 12 (2 credits). InterneLworking Technologies I is theprerequisite.Internetworking Technologies I1 is an advanced course for the Information Technology career cluster.

• Cyber Security- This course offering for 2017-2018 is pending BoardApproval. Grades 11-12 (2 credits).Algebra II is the prerequisite.Cyber Security will be an advanced course for the Information Technology career cluster.

• Culinary Arts-Grades 11-12 (2 credits).• Practicum in Culinary Arts-Grade 12 (2 credits). Culinary Arts is the prerequisite.

Practicum in Culinary Arts is an advanced course for the Hospitality & Tourism career cluster.

• Hospitality Services-Grades 11-12 (2 credits).Practicum in Hospitality-Grade 12 (2 credits). Hospitality Services is the prerequisite.Practicum in Hospitality Services is an advanced course for the Hospitality & Tourism career cluster.

• Manufacturing Engineering I & II- This course offering for 2017-2018 is pending Board Approval.Grades 11-12 (2 credits). Engineering Design or Principles of Engineering will be the prerequisite.Manufacturing Engineering I & TI is an advanced course for the Manufacturing career cluster.

• Practicum in Manufacturing Engineering- This course offering for 2018-2019 is pending Board Approval.Grade 12 (2 credits). Prerequisite will be Manufacturing Engineering I & II.Practicum in Manufacturing Engineering is an advanced course for the Manufacturing career cluster.

NOTE: Concepts of Engineering & TechnologyÿEngineering Design OR Principles of Engineering will be the requiredprerequisites for Manufacturing Engineering I & II beginning 2017-2018.

Online Independent Study & Mentorship PreAP/GT-Grades 10-12 (1 credit). Concurrent enrollment inAP/GT or PreAP/GT English Language Arts at the home campus.PACE PreAP/GT-Grade 12 (1 credit). Concurrent enrollment in AP/GT English Literature at MCTC. Studentsclassified as GT or those with an official GPA of 3.8 or higher are eligible to apply.

Veterinary Medical Applications-Credit change is pending Board Approval. Grades 11-12 (1 credit in 2016-2017, but is expected to change to 2 credits for 2017-2018).Vet Med II-Credit change is pending Board Approval. Grade 12 (1 credit in 2016-2017, but is expected tochange to 2 credits for 2017-2018). Veterinary Medical Applications is the prerequisite.Vet Med II is an advanced course for the Agriculture Food & Natural Resources career cluster.

The car icon ÿ indicates students must provide their own transportation at the beginning of the schoolyear and should not plan to carpool with another student to an internship.

Any additions or changes to a current course verification sheet must be requested through home campus counselors in March/April.

Decisions as to whether a particular course will be taught are based upon Katy ISD School Board approval, the number of students requesting thecourse, and the availability of qualified personnel to teach the course. Listing of courses does not guarantee the course will be taught.

Practicum in Education & Training-Grade 12.Practicum in Education & Training is an advanced course for the Education & Training career cluster.

Clinical Rotation-Practicum in Health Science-Grade 12 (2 credits). Health Science I is the prerequisite. AllClinical Rotation courses will be offered exclusively at MCTC beginning 2017-2018.Clinical Rotation is an advanced course for the Health Sciences career cluster.

Dental Assisting-Practicum in Health Science- This course offering for 2017-2018 is pending Board Approval.Grade 12 (2 credits). Health Science I is the prerequisite. All Clinical Rotation courses will be offeredexclusively at MCTC beginning 2017-2018.Dental Assisting is an advanced course for the Health Sciences career cluster.

EMT Basic-Practicum in Health Science-Grade 12 (2 credits). Health Science I is the prerequisite. All EMTcourses will be offered exclusively at MCTC beginning 2017-2018.EMT is an advanced course for the Health Sciences career cluster.

Pharmacy Tech-Practicum in Health Science-Grade 12 (2 credits), Health Science I is the prerequisite.Pharmacy Tech will continue to be offered exclusively at MCTC.Pharmacy Tech is an advanced course for the Health Sciences career cluster.

HEALTH SCIENCE PATHWAY: Current enrollment (2015-2016) in Principles of Health Science (PHS) or Health Science I(HSI) are prerequisites for eligibility to apply to any of the practicum courses for 2016-2017.

2015-2016 sophomores, not currently enrolled in PHS, have two options to prepare for eligibility to apply for practicumcourses:

1.) Take PHS through Katy Summer Academic Term (KSAT) during the summer of 2016 AND enroll in HSI during 2016-2017 which completes the Public Services Endorsement-Health Science pathway; OR

2.) Take PHS or HSI during the 2016-2017 school year and be eligible for the practicum courses, but not for the PublicServices Endorsement-Health Science pathway. This exception to the pathway is for 2015-2016 sophomores only andwill NOT be repeated in future years.

The application for each of the senior level Health Science Practicum courses is competitive. Enrollment in one or both ofthe pre-requisite courses does not guarantee admission. Be advised that a single pre-requisite and the Practicum coursedo not complete the pathway for the Public Services Endorsement-Health Science pathway.

2015-2016 freshman and all younger students will be required to follow the pathway:Pnnciples of Health Science-ÿHealth Science I will be the required prerequisites for all Health Science Practicum coursesbeginning 2017-2018.
