From The Principalʼs Desk
One of the ways we make information about MIller School available to families is through the handbook. In order to save paper and money the Miller School Parent/Student Handbook is available online at http://www.msad40.org/schools/Miller/ . It contains valuable information about school policies, expectations, and helpful hints. There are sections about arrival and dismissal, health information, Board policies, and behavior. We are updating our behavior rubric and will be adding that section as soon as it is completed.
If you would like a paper copy of the handbook we'll be happy to print one for you, just contact the office at 832-2103.
Please take some time to review this document with your child(ren) and return the form you will find in his/her backpack.

News from the Health Of0ice Each week, the RSU 40 Health Of4ice will provide helpful tips on staying active, healthy living/eating and staying safe. With the new school year upon us, we’d like to set parameters for when a child should be sent to school when they are not feeling well. Some parents have asked for guidelines in making this decision, so we thought it wise to let you know of conditions when it would be best for a child to not attend school.
Please keep your child home if she/he exhibits one or more of the following symptoms:
*Fever: A temperature of 100.6 degrees F or higher (taken orally). A child should be “fever free” for 24 hours without the use of Tylenol or Motrin.
*Diarrhea: Watery, foul smelling, runny and/or bloody stools.
*Vomiting: One or more times in the last 24-‐hour period.
*Sore throat: With vomiting, earache or irritability accompanied by a fever.
*Nasal Discharge: Runny, yellowish-‐greenish mucous accompanied by fever, vomiting, or diarrhea.
*”Pinkeye”: Greenish, yellowish drainage and in4lammation of the conjunctiva (white) of the eye.
*Rash: An unexplained rash with fever or behavioral change. A child can return to school if a physician has determined the illness is not communicable and a fever is gone.
*Strep throat/Impetigo and other bacterial infections requiring antibiotics: Discuss with your physician when it is appropriate to return to school.
Children with the above symptoms cannot comfortably participate in program activities and they unnecessarily expose others to their illnesses. They should stay home for at least 24 hours before returning to school. If you believe your child is too sick to go out to recess, then she/he is probably too sick to attend school.
Please encourage your child to wash hands before eating, after using the bathroom, and after sneezing or blowing her/his nose.
By using these few guidelines we can all stay a little healthier.

That’s right – September is National Head Lice Prevention Month! Adult head lice are roughly 2–3 mm long. Head lice infest the head and neck and attach their eggs to the base of the hair shaft. Lice move by crawling; they cannot hop or fly. Head lice infestation, or pediculosis, is spread most commonly by close person-to-person contact. Dogs, cats, and other pets do not play a role in the transmission of human lice. Both over-the-counter and prescription medications are available for treatment of head lice infestations.
Where are head lice most commonly found?
Head lice and head lice nits are found almost exclusively on the scalp, particularly around and behind the ears and near the neckline at the back of the head. Head lice or head lice nits sometimes are found on the eyelashes or eyebrows but this is uncommon. Head lice hold tightly to hair with hook-like claws at the end of each of their six legs. Head lice nits are cemented firmly to the hair shaft and can be difficult to remove even after the nymphs hatch and empty casings remain.
What are the signs and symptoms of head lice infestation?

How did my child get head lice?
Head-to-head contact with an already infested person is the most common way to get head lice. Head-to-head contact is common during play at school, at home, and elsewhere (sports activities, playground, slumber parties, camp).
Although uncommon, head lice can be spread by sharing clothing or belongings. This happens when lice crawl, or nits attached to shed hair hatch, and get on the shared clothing or belongings.
Treatment for Head Lice - General Guidelines
Treatment for head lice is recommended for persons diagnosed with an active infestation. All household members and other close contacts should be checked; those persons with evidence of an active infestation should be treated.
Treat the infested person(s): Requires using an Over-the-counter (OTC) or prescription medication. Follow these treatment steps:
• Before applying treatment, it may be helpful to remove clothing that can become wet or stained during treatment.
• Apply lice medicine, also called pediculicide, according to the instructions contained in the box or printed on the label. If the infested person has very long hair (longer than shoulder length), it may be necessary to use a second bottle. Pay special attention to instructions on the label or in the
