Letter from our CEO

Welcome to our Inaugural

Million Women Mentors Summit

& Gala at the National Press

Club in Washington, DC. I am so

excited and honored to present

to you the tremendous work that

we have done with our partners

and sponsors to drive for much

needed change for women and

girls interested in STEM (science,

technology, engineering and

math). In just over a year, we

have brought together over 60

girl-serving partners, 30 corporate

sponsors and 35 states all of whom

are actively engaged with boots on the ground to drive for more women in

STEM careers and more girls interested in STEM education. We have a long

road ahead with only about 26% of STEM jobs being filled by women currently.

Mentoring is the answer. Now with over 356,000 pledges to mentor on our

way to a million, we are driving for a stronger presence for girls and women

in STEM education and careers by promoting their interests through five key

mentoring pathways: face-to-face, online, internships, workplace, and through

sponsorship. What you’ll hear today are all of the great ways our partners

and sponsors are shining a light on women in STEM and paving the way for

a more diverse future for the STEM workforce through their own mentoring

initiatives that align with these pathways. We invite you across today to join

this powerful call to arms by engaging with our girl-serving partners, learning

from our corporate sponsors, or pledging your own mentorship through our Be

Counted Campaign.

The Science Cheerleaders are professional cheerleaders pursuing science careers who playfully challenge stereotypes, turn everyone onto science by encouraging participation in citizen science activities, and inspire young women (including 3-4 million U.S. cheerleaders) to consider careers in science, technology, engineering and math. We do this by recasting the image of scientists and engineers while giving people the opportunity to explore their personal interests as a gateway to science. We communicate in ways that inspire people using our very real, very personal stories. We do this at schools, festivals, malls, on tv, online, at cheer events, games, bars…wherever the people are! The point: science is accessible to ALL!

More than 200 current and former professional cheerleaders from the NFL, NBA, and other pro sports leagues, pursuing science and engineering careers make up the Science Cheerleaders. Learn more about them here. Thousands of college, high school and middle school cheerleaders–with interests in science and engineering–are poised to join our mission. And we hope, through our partnership with Pop Warner Little Scholars, Inc., we’ll spark interest in science among their 100,000 young cheerleaders each year!

BP has supported science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education in the U.S. for more than 60 years and is proud to continue that commitment. BP works through a purposeful combination of national and regional initiatives to equip teachers to excel in STEM teaching, to inspire and excite students in STEM pathways and to mobilize BP employees to make a powerful contribution in STEM.

Each year BP invests millions of dollars in STEM education. BP is proud to support STEM teacher development and K-12 programs in more than 25 states. Additionally, BP provides STEM scholar-ships and works to recruit and develop top college students, helping a new generation of innova-tors, entrepreneurs and scientists to break barriers and reach their full potential.

PepsiCo has worked tirelessly to attract minorities and women into STEM fields. PepsiCo holds the vice chair of the global MWM taskforce, which strives to secure mentorship for female STEM talent all around the world.

Additionally, for the past 20-plus years, in collaboration with the University of Illinois, PepsiCo has been a leading sponsor of the Research Apprentice Program, which focuses on under-represented students. During this time the program enrolled 1,200 students— two-thirds women, two-thirds African-American, and one-fourth Hispanic. And more than one third of these students pursued graduate studies.

Further, in the US, in March 2014, the STEMconnector Innovation Task Force and PepsiCo piloted an event called “STEM Career Accelerator Day,” which offered a firsthand look at how STEM trans-lates from the classroom to the workplace. Conducted simultaneously at corporate workplaces, on university campuses, and online, the event brought together 4,300 U.S. high school students. The students, which included females and minorities, received insights into jobs and STEM skills needed for these jobs. Along with mentoring by seasoned STEM professionals, students also par-ticipated in hands-on activities designed to bridge the gap between academic theory and com-mercial action.

MWM is proud to honor the following individuals and organizations who are truly leading the frontlines for more diversity in STEM fields. The award recipients have co-authored and co-branded research around employee en-gagement, women in STEM careers and the positive impact of mentoring; have gathered thousands of mentors to sponsor young girls and women interested in STEM; and have created from infrastructures that support mentorship and the development of tremendous scientific achievements. We see real change with your help. Congratulations to all of our award recipients!

Our Commitment to America: Fueling the Next Generation of Innovators

To provide the energy that keeps America moving, BP depends on the brightest minds. Almost two-thirds of our U.S. employees work in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) roles and over the next 10 years, more than half of our new graduate hires will require a STEM degree. In fact, almost all of the 30 fastest-growing occupations in the next decade will require at least some background in STEM. That’s why we’re committed to advancing STEM education at every level. From scholarship programs and education initiatives to boot camps and mentoring, we’re fostering the engineers, geologists and data scientists of tomorrow.

Supporting education in the communities where we live and work is one more part of our commitment to America. For more on how BP supports STEM education, go to bp.com/STEMed
