When you retire or separate from themilitary, you’re bound to have mixed feel-ings. You are probably excited about theupcoming change and the chance to moveto a new home. But you’re also likely tofeel stressed about the logistics of themove. There are steps you can take andresources available to help you make plansand stay organized during your final mili-tary move.

Getting startedYou’ve probably moved with the mili-

tary more than once, but this move willbe different because you’re not going toa new duty station—you’re going to yournew home. The military has a system setup to help you plan your move so it goesoff without a hitch.

Set up your move online. Once youhave orders, you can begin the planningprocess with Move.mil. With access to thissite, you can set up your final move online.

Visit the Relocation Assistance Pro-gram (RAP) office. The office is staffedby trained professionals who can help youmanage your move. Because each moveis different and regulations vary by servicebranch and location, the RAP staff canhelp you understand what benefits are

available as part of your final move.Visit Plan My Move. As a fully custom-

izable relocation tool, Plan My Move pro-vides a system to help service membersand their families organize their moves.On the site, you can create “To Do” lists,“Important Telephone Number” listsand find links to more than 90 individualmoving tasks with points of contact.

Household goodsFor most service members leaving the

military at retirement or at their end ofactive service (EAS), a final move at gov-ernment expense is authorized. Detailedinformation and weight allowances areavailable through your installation’s RAPoffice, Transportation Management Of-fice (TMO) or on the Move.mil website.

• Retirees: As a retiree, you are autho-rized a final move anywhere within theUnited States (including Alaska and Ha-waii) or to your home of record outsidethe United States. The benefits are avail-able for one year from your retirementdate, but extensions may be granted on acase-by-case basis.

on your type of discharge, you may be al-lowed one final move from your last dutystation. Details vary based on the type ofseparation.

• Honorable discharge, involuntaryseparation: You may be moved anywherewithin the United States (including Alas-ka and Hawaii) or to your home of recordoutside the United States within one yearof your separation date.

• Honorable discharge, voluntary sepa-ration: If you are separating voluntarilyand not under a special service branchprogram, you are authorized a final movewithin 180 days. You will be moved toyour home of record (or to a location ofequal or lesser distance). If you are sepa-rating under a service branch program,see you RAP office for details on yourparticular program.

• Other than honorable, bad conduct,or dishonorable discharge: You must havea letter from the convening authority au-thorizing your entitlement to a move.

Service members living in installationhousing may be authorized one move outof housing into the local community, and afinal move within the time and geographiclimits listed above. In limited circumstanc-es, an installation commander may allowseparating members to remain in familyhousing for up to 180 days, but they willbe required to pay rent based on currentBasic Allowance for Housing rates.

Other benefits and allowancesStorage: Storage of your household

goods may be necessary and included aspart of your final move. Your RAP of-fice can provide details on the time limitsavailable for storage based on your orders.

Travel allowances: In many cases, ser-vice members leaving the military taketerminal leave, which does not includetravel allowances. Check with your ser-vice branch’s personnel office to find outabout your particular circumstances. Ser-vice members separating from an overseasduty station may be allowed travel allow-ances when they leave their duty station.

Personally Procured Move (PPM):Formerly known as a do-it-yourself move,PPM is a voluntary program that will re-imburse you for the majority of your costswhen you move yourself. Separating andretiring service members may take advan-tage of this program. Keep in mind youmust have prior approval from the Per-sonal Property Office (PPO) to claim ex-penses for a PPM.

Set up your move as soon as possible.As soon as you know where you’re going,schedule the move or storage of yourhousehold goods. Although you may haveup to a year, scheduling your move earlywill help ensure you move on the date youchoose. Be sure to coordinate with yourPPO or TMO to avoid any unexpectedfinancial costs for storage.
