    BY STATE SUPERINTENDENTTONY EVERS

I have been an advocate for careerand technical education programssince my first years of teaching. Icouldn’t help but notice that the kidswho were truly involved in these class-es weredriven; they connectedtheirlearning to theirfuture and that moti-vated them to succeed.

That’s why I’m so excited to joinFebruary’s observance of Career andTechnical Education (CTE) Month.During school visits I have made acrossthe state each year since I was electedstate superintendent of public instruc-tion,students and their teachers show-cased the coursework and experiencesthat ground CTE in the real world. And,it’s not just the classroom that makesCTE so powerful. It’s the co-op pro-grams, work-based learning, andapprenticeships as well as opportuni-ties through Career and TechnicalStudent Organizations that help stu-dents learn aboutleadership, team-work, communications, and criticaland creative thinking as well as gain-ing experiences for the skill-basedcareers employers say they need.

    In Wisconsin, more than 88,000

high school students, or roughly two-thirds of high schoolers, are taking CTEclasses in areas such as health occupa-tions, marketing and entrepreneur-ship, manufacturing, technology andengineering, agriculture and business, and family and consumer science.Partnerships with local businesses andtechnical colleges support these courseofferings and allow students to explorecareer options, receive industry certifi-cation, and earn post secondary creditswhile progressing toward high schoolgraduation. Transcripted credit isonearea that’s seeing strong growth.During the 2014-15 school year, 24,779students earned technical collegecred-its while in high school, a 78 percentincrease from five years ago.

Because CTE students experiencethe connection between what theylearn and what a future careerdemands, they have a higher gradua-tion rate than other students acrossthe state. It’s a serious mistake tothink CTE is a lesser route. Today’s CTEcoursework requires understandingcore academics applied in relevant,real-world applications. In fact, theapplied academics of CTE are the kindof skill-building every student needs

regardless of their plans after highschool, be it the workforce, military-service, technical college, or a two-orfour-year degree.

Coupled with the opportunities of CTE, Wisconsin is piloting academicand career planning. The process willbe in place statewide for the 2017-18school year to help students starting insixth grade identify personal strengthsand interests. Because academic andcareer planning is comprehensive, involvingparents, teachers, and thecommunity, it gets everyone thinkingearly about possibilities that match astudent’s interests and are informed byworkforce needs. It might mean a stu-dent takes certain academic classes tobuild a foundation for a career, joinsan after- school activity to gain someout-of-classroom experiences, or worksan apprenticeship to experience there-al-world of a specific field. Overall, academic and career planning will givekids more control over their future andhelp them plan to graduate college andcareer ready.

Whether our students take one CTEclass to get a glimpse of a certaincareer path or they concentrate on aseries of courses that jumpstart a tech-

nical degree or industry certificathere’s lots of opportunity for lifelearning and success through CTEme in celebrating Career and TechEducation Month and the imporof CTE classes and technical care

Trapping and ear-tagging of coyotesthat use Milwaukee County parkland inWauwatosa and West Allis will begin inearly February and continue throughlate March. Researchers from theUniversity of Wisconsin—MadisonDepartment of Forest and WildlifeEcology’s Urban Canid Project will setcable restraints (live traps which do notharm the animal), place ear tags ontrapped coyotes, and release them formonitoring.

“During this phase of coyote man-agement, we want to remind the publicto follow ordinances by keeping theirpets leashed and on the designatedtrails,” said Julia Robson, AssistantNatural Areas Coordinator forMilwaukee County Parks. “We also wantto be clear that tampering or interfer-ing with the trapping is illegal, as istrapping by individuals who are notauthorized by the Parks Department.”

Residents throughout MilwaukeeCounty are being encouraged to submitreports of coyote sightings. As taggingoccurs in the targeted areas, citizenswill be able to include information on

the coyotes with uniquely colored ear

tags, helping to tie observations andbehaviors to a specific animal.Residents are asked to submit allreports at inaturalist.org/projects/mil-waukee-county-coyote-watch or use therelated mobile app.

To provide more information aboutcoexisting with urban coyotes, a seriesof educational programs will be offered. The first program will be presentedMonday, Feb. 22, from 6-7:30 p.m. atWil-O-Way Underwood, 10602Underwood Parkway, in Wauwatosa.Researchers from the Urban CanidProject will discuss coyote ecology, coy-ote-human conflict, and behavior mod-ification, as well as ongoing monitoringand management efforts in MilwaukeeCounty. ADA accommodation requestsmay be filed with the Milwaukee CountyOffice for Persons with Disabilities bycalling 278-3932 (voice) or 711 (TRS).

The Parks Department, WisconsinDepartment of Natural Resources, andUrban Canid Project researchers are col-laborating to prepare a coyote manage-ment plan for Milwaukee County, toimplement coyote population monitor-

ing, and to conduct educational out-

reach in targeted areas of the County. The main objective of this collabora-

tive effort is to develop a proactive coy-ote management program by learningmore about Milwaukee’s urban coyotepopulations, monitoring their behav-iors, and determining which specificanimals are exhibiting habituated, orbold, behavior so that targeted educa-tional outreach can be implemented.

“Through a proactive process, wecan address problems before they

become a matter of human or pet sty,” said Robson. “We can coexisturban coyotes–not all are problemmals. The ‘tag and track’ approach help us identify a problem animaldetermine if it needs to be removedtargeted approach is necessary in ote removal because populations rduce to fill voids.
