Con artists masquerading as charitiescan victimize anyone, but seniors areespecially vulnerable to such criminals.Men and women who perpetrate chari-table fraud often target older men andwomen, feeling that seniors are morelikely to have a significant amount ofmoney in their bank accounts and lesslikely to report crimes for fear of embar-rassment.
But even if seniors are prime targetsfor charitable fraud, they still can takesteps to safeguard themselves from scam-mers looking to exploit their generosity.
• Never donate over the phone. Noreputable charity will insist on a donationover the phone. When a person callsand says they represent a charity, theyshould be willing to send you informationin the mail so you can further exploretheir organization before making yourfinal decision. If a caller attempts to pres-sure you into donating over the phone, hang up.
• Keep a list of organizations youhave donated to in the past. Many peo-ple who perpetuate charitable fraud ref-erence a past relationship or donationhistory between their victims and thecharity the criminal is claiming to repre-
sent. Maintain a list of your donation his-tory, including the organizations youhave donated to and the amount of thosedonations. This can help you verify if theperson calling, emailing or visiting you istelling the truth.
• Do not feel obligated to give. Many charities send gifts to their donorsas a token of appreciation for their sup-port. Some criminals masquerading ascharities will send gifts to potential vic-tims in an attempt to fool them into writ-ing a check. Whether a charity is legiti-mate or not, seniors should not feel obli-gated to donate simply because theyreceived a gift. If you receive a gift andwant to donate, confirm that the organi-zation that sent you the gift is legitimateand not an imposter organization that isbaiting you with a gift. If the gift wasaccompanied by a donation form, do notfill out that form, choosing instead tomake a direct donation via the organiza-tion's website, a site you should find inde-pendent of the mailer/gift you received,or mail a check directly to the organiza-tion after you independently confirm itsaddress, be it through your own researchor by contacting the Better BusinessBureau (www.bbb.org).
• Insist that your person-al information is not shared. Before making a charitabledonation, donors are oftennotified that their contactinformation is likely to besold to or traded with othercharities. This can lead toan influx of charitable solic-itations that elderly men andwomen may find over-whelming. So prior to mak-ing a donation, speakdirectly with the charity andinsist that none of your infor-mation be shared with othercharities or organizations. Ifthis cannot be arranged, find an organization willingto make such a concessionand contribute to that chari-ty instead.
• Ask for help. If youare confused when it comestime to make your annualdonations, ask a son, daughter or trusted confi-dante for help so you canrest easy knowing yourdonation goes where you

Drs. Richard and Bruce Winter
Dear Dr. Winter, I have a bad mouth! I haveloose teeth, root tips, bleeding gums and badmouth odor. I really want to have a smile I can beproud of for once in my life.
I am on a fixed income so I do not have all themoney for a glamorous makeover but I amhopeful you can help me. I saw your website andrealize you have helped thousands of patientswith problems similar to mine. Please let meknow how you can help me. Ann
Dear Ann, when people are in pain or ashamedof their mouth the first step is always the hardest!Since we see people with severe dental issues youcan be assured that you will never be judged. Theconcepts that Dr. Winter lectures on include"Upgradeable Dentistry" which allows people topick a plan that will sequentially help peopleimprove their smiles at a pace they can afford.
If you must have dentures we may offer deluxedentures with soft liners to give you the ultimatein comfort. Or we may offer small diameterimplants to help hold your dentures firmly inplace without the need for messy adhesives.
From there we discuss whether we can performgrafting to improve the amount of bone you haveso that implants can be done within 8-12 monthswhile avoiding more expensive graftingprocedures. Perhaps we can discuss a path where2-4 implants are placed each year and you wouldgo from a removable implant retained denture toa "fixed bridge". That option would allow you tohave your teeth in your mouth 24/7 without theembarrassment of removing them at night.
So having the flexibility to discuss dynamictreatments is what we offer at Hampton DentalAssociates. You can go towww.hamptondentalassociates.com and see ourpatient testimonials, read our blog and visit oursocial media! We would love it if you would visit:https://www.facebook.com/HamptonDentalAssociates
And like us on facebook! We share articles, a rich photo gallery and
videos to help people make informed decisions
about their complex dental needs.Dr. Winter has a Mastership in the Academy
of General Dentistry, a Diplomate in theInternational Congress of Oral Implantologists,he has a Diplomate in the American Board ofOral Implantology/Implant Dentists and will bereceiving his Fellowship in the AmericanAcademy of Implant Dentistry in October 2015.By investing in education, taking rigorousexaminations and becoming certified in all themajor dental implant organizations he is poisedto educate and offer the finest treatment that isavailable with dental implants. We invite any ofour readers or their friends to come in for anexamination visit and to take the first steptoward regaining your smile and dignity.
We look forward to meeting you!Dr. Richard Winter MAGD, DICOI, DABOI/ID

Residents are invited to tour the newlyopened City of Milwaukee/WaukeshaCounty Materials Recovery Facility (MRF)located at 1401 W. Mt. Vernon Ave.,Milwaukee on Saturday, September 19from 10 a.m. — 3 p.m. during Doors OpenMilwaukee, an event that opens doors tothe public for tours to over 150 buildingsin the Milwaukee area at no charge.
This publicly-owned, single sort recy-cling facility is a partnership betweenWaukesha County and the City ofMilwaukee that is privately operated byReCommunity Recycling. Due to stronghousehold recycling participation, theWaukesha County recycling program hasbeen able to return over $13 million in div-idends to tax payers in partner communi-ties since 2001. Waukesha County antic-ipates that single sort recycling willincrease recycling rates for continued pro-gram success to maintain dividend pay-ments. Similarly, the City of Milwaukee’srecycling program revenues have aver-aged $1.5 million per year since 2004and have off-set over $16 million in resi-dential recycling collection costs over thattime.
The new MRF began operating in
March which is now sorting and process-ing recyclables from approximately270,000 households served by single sortrecycling programs in the 25 participatingWaukesha County communities and theCity of Milwaukee. The MRF is designedto process 35 tons per hour or 60,000tons per year of recyclables.
Visitors can take a self-directed tour attheir own pace to view the state-of-the-artequipment and learn the process of singlesort recycling. While the equipment willnot be operating, visitors can still get anup-close look at the tip floor, the pre-sortcabins, paper and cardboard screens, balers, optical sort machines, sorter plat-forms, and finished bales ready for ship-ment to secondary processors or industriessuch as paper mills. Through a coopera-tive effort, staff from Waukesha County, the City of Milwaukee and Keep GreaterMilwaukee Beautiful will be availablethroughout the facility to provide interpre-tation and answer questions. Visitorsmust wear closed-toe shoes to be allowedentry.
