French knots have a
distinct rosebud shape. It is
unclear where the knot originated, but it
became popular in Greece and made its way
through other south European countries into the
UK and United States. The technique of this
type of embroidery is not easy to learn, but
becomes easier with practice. French
knots are often hand-done needlework,
but it can also be done by a
machine.
Gingham is a check or
plaid patterned cotton-based fabric.
The original Gingham fabric was imported from
South East Asia to Europe in the 17th century and
had a striped pattern. A weavery in
Manchester copied a version of the fabric
and changed the pattern to check,
in a distinctive blue
and white color.
Why?
* Because this is the perfect
dress for a girl * Made of
luxurious Gingham fabric with
blue motif * A fun zipper and
colorful French knot detail on
the chest * 95% cotton, 5% Lycra,
so super comfortable! * No
ironing, always fresh and wrinkle
-free * Stains & dirty spots
hardly show up on the patterned
fabric * Colors that suit every
child* Versatile waistband: tie
it in a big bow, or a small knot to
the front or to the side * In the
sizes 2 to 10 years

WORK
Mim-pi’s collections are designed in Holland with tailored
and embroidered fabrics, ribbons and decorations made in
India. Mim-pi has been with the same Indian factory,
operated by a respectable family for ten years. 99% of the
tailors are male, the women who work there are specialized
in embroideries, beading and sequin techniques.
Mim-pi’s Eleonora travels to India
twice a year to design her collections.
She always brings an extra suitcase
filled with Barbie dolls to give away
to street kids in India. These Barbies
are purchased at Thrift stores, given
to her by friends, family or their
children. Lots of people collect them
for her, so Eleonora can find them a
new owner. ‘It is a small gesture, but
it is important to me. Every child de-
serves toys’, says Eleonora.

ELEONORA @EARLYBEGINNINGS‘When I finished my administrative assistant
degree, I decided to travel instead of putting on a
business suit in a nine to five job. I craved some-
thing exotic and backpacked through Thailand, Sin-
gapore, Hong Kong and Indonesia for three months.
Not the type to lie on a beach, I explored the back
roads and markets. I discovered gorgeous jewellery
and fashion that did not cost much. I got inspired
by the beautiful designs and colours, and my slum-
bering flair for business kicked into high gear.
Back in The Netherlands I unwrapped the 6,000
pairs of earrings that I purchased in Bali. I was as
stunned as anyone when I sold the bulk of them
for a profit. My travel bug not yet fulfilled, I used
the money to travel some more. This is what I call
my first “business trip’’. I went for the purpose of
getting to know certain fabric outlets and small
factories where beautiful embroideries were made.
I came back with a lot of contacts and knowledge.
From here, things developed really fast. Before I
knew it I had three stores, selling women’s fashion.
The first time I started thinking about my own kids’
line was when I had my daughter. The bulk of girls’
fashion out there were mini-versions of what adults
wear. A shame, because kids already grow up so
fast! I want young girls to be able to wear funky, fun
and whimsical clothes that they love.’
ELEONORA @INSPIRATION‘Inspiration for my collections come from every-
thing and anything; the circus, gypsies, Bambi or
retro. When an image or idea sticks with me, I go
with it. I flip through magazines, search the web
endlessly and collect all kinds of objects that catch
my eye. From postcards to ribbons to antique jewel-
lery. I often say ‘the eye needs to travel’ and I mean
this in the broadest sense possible. The eye needs
to travel to foreign countries, but it also needs to
be able to shift perspective and see the
unexpected.’
ELEONORA @WORK‘The place where I work is a dream! I
have a gorgeous studio and I love the
vibe. So Mim-pi. I work at an extra-large
table that gives me room to spread out
mood boards, designs and fabrics. I
look out on the woods and sometimes
I can even smell the ocean air. My
‘boardroom’ is a little garden tea house
where meetings can go long into the
evening because there is a cozy fire
place to keep the space warm.
ELEONORA @PASSION‘My mantra is: ‘Smile and the world will
smile with you.’ I passionately live by
this. I am naturally a happy person and
I am a do-er. Some people think that
my personality is why I succeed; I am
like a Duracell bunny. The mantra also
translates in doing the right thing when
it comes to outsourcing aspects of cre-
ating a collection. No sweat shops and
underage workers in my company!’
ELEONORA @DESIGN‘I am a design junkie! Not in the sense
of ‘high design’, but in the sense that it
is important to be original. The same
goes for her clothing line. I like to be a
little ahead of the trends. That is why
I look at Harajuku girls and why some
items in my line – Fluo – for example,
have an edge. It is important to make
statements with clothing. Besides wan-
ting to make girls feel like princesses
in their own fairy tale, I also don’t shy
away from corky or funky. I mean, every
girl – big or small – has days that feel
like dress-up days and days that call for
comfortable baggy pants and a stretchy
T-shirt. It is, however, essential that
a girl still looks pretty in those baggy

pants. The answer is the Fluo-line: great comfort
wear, but fun and feminine.’
ELEONORA @HOME‘I have two kids, a boy and a girl. Often people
ask me if I will ever design a boy’s line. And the
answer is “probably not”. I tried it once, but it is
not my thing. I learned that boys like ‘plain’ and
‘subtle’ and I seem incapable of that. I like to be
loud and fun with lots of frills.
A second question that people often ask me is
what I would like my kids to be when they grow
up. I want them to travel to off-the-beaten-track
places, I want them to buy one of those retro
Citroën vans and turn it into a food truck. I want
them to explore the possibilities that life has
to offer and figure out what their talent is. If I
learned one thing, it’s that my travels made me
into a more open-minded person, but also more
humble and less self-centered. I often remind
myself: there is a big world out there.’
ELEONORA@ CHARITIES‘In my industry a lot of shady business goes on
behind the scenes. I want no part in that. I want
to run a clean business with well-made, honest
clothes and I want to be a good employer. Not
only to my team here, but also to my workers
abroad. This is why I became a member of
Made-By, an organisation that ensures good
working conditions for workers abroad. I value
my employees here as much as I value my em-
ployees in India.
Since I spend so much time in India I feel con-
nected to the people. Years ago I started giving
away Barbie dolls to street kids. Now I always
travel with an extra suitcase full of Barbie dolls
and I find new owners for each Barbie doll in
India.’
ELEONORA @TRAVEL‘I travel for work. To India. Twice a year. I love
traveling, for work or for pleasure. We recently
moved to a new home that feeds my travel gene.
We live in the middle of nature, surrounded by
trees, close to the ocean. I don’t have to try hard
to imagine that I am in Australia or Canada. My
backyard truly feels like a holiday destination.’
ELEONORA @AMBITION‘I strive to make each collection better than the
last. I strive to be original and inventive in each
season. I like to become a brand with a credo,
with clear principles and values. I also hope to
grow bigger. I would like to sell Mim-pi in many
more countries in the future.’
ELEONORA @ME‘It is important to take time out of my busy
schedule as a juggling mom, designer and busi-
ness woman to unwind and connect with who
I am. This winter I am doing so by visiting my
best friend in Australia. Just me and her, no kids,
no husbands, no work. I can’t wait!’

Harajuku
Tokyo, Japan. A bustling city of lights where old clashes with new and where
technology is always one step ahead. In the midst of the fast-paced metro-
polis sits Harajuku, formerly known as a quiet neighbourhood, but turned
into a hip hangout after the 1964 Olympics. Harajuku is Tokyo’s answer to
the Champs Élysées. It is a fashion mecca for designers and a shopaholic’s
dream. Couture houses popped up in recent years, but the area is mostly
known for the Harajuku girls flaunting their daring and outrage-
ous fashion styles. When asked why they gather there, most of
them will timidly answer: ‘because it’s fun’. But, do not be mistaken, these girls
stand on the frontier of fashion and are more serious about the ‘art of playing
dress up’ then they let on.
In a way, the Harajuku girls can be compared to the hopeful starlets that parade
Robertson Boulevard in Beverly Hills. Both want to be seen and are hoping to be
discovered by paparazzi. Both have passion for their work and both hope to be
recognized for their talents. Harajuku girls are the real deal when it comes to the
art of fashion. There is nothing absurd or clown-like about their outfits, for these
girls it is about defining the next fashion style.
B
Mim-pi 53 52 Mim-pi
What we like most about the eccentric
but fantastic fashion styles showcased
in Harajuku is that they evoke a feeling
of fairy tales and celebration. The en-
sembles are often costume-like, based
on historical or fictional characters,
or they scream ‘birthday party!’ with
colourful hair clips and kilos jewellery.
Among the fashion styles that have
evolved from Harajuku are Punk, Goth
and Lolita. Lolita is Victorian-inspired.
A typical Lolita-wardrobe consists of a
blouse, a bell-shaped skirt and knee-
high socks. She often wears a petticoat,
maybe a corset or frilly peek-a-boo
undergarments, called bloomers. The
classic Lolita looks like she is visiting
from the past and a true Lolita even
acts like that; proper, timid, with a
great sense of etiquette.
Where Lolita is one of the more ‘sub-
dued’ styles on the streets of Harajuku,
Decora is the loudest. Short for ‘deco-
ration’, Decora is childlike, cute and co-
lorful with an edgy undertone. Decora
is all about over-accessorizing, layering
and lots of pink. The overabundance of
jewellery is often made of plastic with
childish images, such as Hello Kitty!
and Pokémon. At first sight this style
is cotton-candy-sweet, but those who
look closely discover a certain ‘wicked-
ness’ that hides behind the body glitter
and pom pom decorated socks.
Because the Harajuku girls define
mainstream fashion, Mim-Pi likes to
look at their styles to see what is en
vogue and trend setting in Japan. But
there is more. Harajuku girls and Mim-
Pi girls have a lot in common: Harajuku
girls live in a fantasy world, come from
the past or celebrate life with loud
colors and bracelets. Similarly, a Mim-
Pi girl is the princess in her own fairy
tale, has big dreams for the future and
wants every day to be a birthday party.
Both love to mix and match, both love
to accessorize and both are – in their
own ways - style definers.

Sometimes she looks on while we
draw new designs in our studio. Some-
times she shows up on Pinterest when we’re
browsing for new ideas and mood boards. Sometimes she inspires us to give her
a new makeshift hair piece or cute belt. She is always with us and has been from
the beginning. Blythe-inspired prints show up in our 2013 winter collection and
we are sure she will inspire us again in 2014!
Obviously, we love Blythe! She is versatile, gorgeous and cute. The dolls’s best
feature is her eyes that change color and direction by the pull of a string on the
back of her head. It gives her a different expression in an instant. We are also big
fans of her anime-look and her pouty lips. Blythe has amazing (vintage) fashion
sense and her look has been sought after by large companies. She once starred
in a Sony commercial and she served as a muse for the late Alexander McQueen
when he designed a collection for Target.

Bly he
Blythe is a doll that was first manufactured in 1972 by Hasbro. She was supposed
to successfully compete with Mattel’s Barbie. Unfortunately she miserably failed.
A year later she was taken out of production.
Most girls found the Blythe doll, with her large eyes and tiny body, scary. Features
that the makers of the doll thought of as ‘cute’, were instead perceived ‘creepy’.
Thirty years after her demise, Blythe became the muse of New York-based visual
artist Gina Garlan. As a doll collector she was in awe of her unique, corky, but
edgy look. She felt deeply connected with the doll, partly because she resembled
her own looks with wide set, large eyes.
Gina started using Blythe as a model to practice photography and found in her
a versatile model that allowed her to be creative with outfits and backgrounds.
Planning to publish her photographs in a book, Gina searched for an agent. She
found a great match in Junko Wong, who also loved Blythe at first sight. Together
they relaunched Blythe in Japan, where it was a huge hit instantly. Blythe is also
for sale in the United States, but it is easier to purchase a Blythe doll online.
Now, when a new Blythe doll is hitting the shelves, she is sold out instantly.
Blythe-fans are found in artists, fashionistas and doll collectors. So maybe the
original Blythe was simply marketed to the wrong demographic. In any case,
Blythe is back and en vogue! And this is good news for us at Mim-Pi,
as we will be selling Blythe via our webstore!

I LOVE to dance in my Mimpi clothes, they are so comfortable.
Mikki Stam (4) - Lemmer

I am a big fan of Mim-pi clothes! My mom showed me how to mix all the
different pieces from all the different collections. I love to choose my own outfits and
I think I look great in them! Especially the one in this picture, because it is so colorful. I wish my dolls could wear Mim-pi too, then I would have so much fun dressing them
up. I mostly love to wear skirts and dresses, because they match with my colorful Mim-pi socks and tights.
I love that my picture was chosen, because when I am grown up, I would like to be a famous singer. My favorite band is K3 and I
know all their songs and almost all their dance moves. Sometimes I perform for my mom, my dad and my two brothers, and they clap at the end. My dad taught me how to
bow. That is my favorite part.

XEven when I am not at ballet I still
look like a ballerina, because of
my outfits. The most fun is when
a skirt twirls really wide when I spin
around really fast. When I am
not dancing, I like to sing, or
draw and do crafts. I
often draw ballerinas, because I
think they are pretty. I can’t wait
for April, when me and my friends
from dance class will perform on a real stage.
On the picture I am wearing
my favorite Mim-pi outfit.
I picked it out myself in the store.
The girl on the blue shirt is so
pretty and I love the
butterflies. I have lots
of butterflies in my room.
On my beautiful favorite
duvet cover for example. I also
have butterfly-wallpaper on my
wall with two coat hangers
where I hang my new Mim-pi
outfits so I can look at
them all the time.
