. The Grande Arche de la Fraternité is a monument in the businessdistrict of La Défense to the west of Paris. It is usually known asthe Arche de la Défense or simply as La Grande Arche. Aninternational design competition was launched at the initiative ofFrench president François Mitterrand. Danish architect JohannOtto von Spreckelsen (1929–1987) designed the winning entry tobe a 20th century version of the Arc de Triomphe: a monument tohumanity and humanitarian ideals rather than military victories. After Spreckelsen's death in 1987, his associate, French architectPaul Andreu, completed the work. The Arche is almost a perfectcube (width: 108m, height: 110m, depth: 112m. The two sideshouse government offices. The roof section, exploited by is anexhibition centre.

. How to get thereThe campus is served by the Paris Métro station Jussieu, as wellas numerous bus lines.

.

Jussieu 16M Atrium.

AddressPlace Jussieu 275005 ParisFrancehttp://www.epajussieu.fr/

. Jussieu Campus consists out of a regular grid of 6-floor wings andis generally decried as an architectural failure. The hollow spaceunder the buildings enables wind to build up its force, the regulargrid plan is confusing and polluted with asbestos. It hasincreasingly degraded, leaving its facade covered in graffiti. Thenew 16M building extends and completes the grid plan thatarchitect Edouard Albert designed in the 60s; based on theexisting system, but at the same time deforms it: where Albertlaid out a single patio, Périphériques planned two. The façadesare glazed on the same pattern as Albert’s existing building. Butthe glass metal skin composed of ten types of panels perforatedwith circular holes of different sizes give the façades complexand variable depth. At ground floor, the existing slab on whichthe university buildings are built folds up in an origami-likeorange ramp to even up the levels in a fluid movement.

. Mitterrand sprinkled Paris with bold landmarks, from Pei's glasspyramid at the Louvre to Dominique Perrault's National Library.Georges Pompidou built the colorful machinelike museum. Likeits predecessors, Chirac’s new Quai Branly has stirredconsiderable resentment. Defiant, mysterious and wildlyeccentric, it is not an easy building to love. Its jumble ofdifferent structures, set in a lush green garden on the bank of theSeine in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower, hardly conforms tonotions of Parisian monumental elegance. Yet, Jean Nouvel'sdesign creates a kaleidoscopic montage of urban impressions. Andonce you give yourself over to the experience, you may find it thegreatest monument to French popular culture since thePompidou. The building combines angular glass walls withfuturistic cubes of bright color and outside, a green wall of thickvegetation, suggestive of a forest or a jungle. An enormouscurved glass wall shields the garden from cars roaring by. Anurban oasis.

. In 1980, 18 Arab countries concluded an agreement with Franceto establish the AWI to spread knowledge and research the ArabWorld’s language, and its cultural and spiritual values, reflectingthe opinion, that the Arab world - its civilization and values, itspast and its future - needs to be better known and understood inthe West. It supplies cultural information in a wide range ofmedia: libraries, electronic databanks, a conventional, glass-casemuseum, audio-visual displays, and an outreach program oftouring exhibits and performances as well. This is not an Arabbuilding, but an occidental one, it’s not pastiche, like the ParisMosque, but modern and from an urban point of view, theInstitute is a hinge between 2 cultures and 2 histories. Certainsymbolic items like the “moucharabiehs” whose polygons ofvarying shapes and sizes, create a geometric effect recalling theAlhambra. Jean Nouvel designed the whole of the museum, including the showcases, seating, and display furniture.

. On 14 July 1988, François Mitterrand announced the constructionand the expansion of one of the largest and most modernlibraries in the world, intended to cover all fields of knowledge, and designed to be accessible to all, using the most modern datatransfer technologies, which could be consulted from a distance, and which would collaborate with other European libraries. InJuly 1989, the services of the architectural firm of DominiquePerrault were retained. After the move of the major collectionsfrom the rue de Richelieu, the National Library of France openedto the public on 20 December 1996. It contains more than tenmillion volumes. The new complex consists of a large esplanadeand four identical L-shaped towers, whose form recalls the shapeof an open book. This architecture was controversial; manyconsidered it too costly, and not very suitable to the storage ofbook collections. Indeed, wooden boards had to be set up at thewindows to protect the books from the light.

AddressSquare du Docteur-Blanche 10 75016 ParisFrancehttp://www.fondationlecorbusier.asso.fr/

. Villa La Roche was built as a home for Raoul La Roche, a Swissbanker and collector of avant-garde art. Among other things, thehouse would serve as a private gallery to display La Roche'sextensive art collection. Built in a private Paris courtyard, thehouse had major constraints imposed by the site and its zoningrestrictions, including a north orientation, existing trees andheight and boundary limitations. Inside the building, to displaythe art, an ‘architectural promenade’ was made, a themeinspired by Le Corbusier's visit to the Acropolis in 1911 andrepeated most strikingly in his Carpenter centre for the VisualArts nearly forty years later. The promenade goes up and downstaircases, leads you through tight spaces, in-between balconies, open surveys, down ramps and into a beautifully lit library. Thisidea of a spatial sequence was re-invented by many modernarchitects, after Le Corbusier.

. In 1994, the Fondation Cartier moved, exchanging Jouy-en-Josasnear Versailles for the boulevard Raspail in the heart of Paris. Itsnew premises were designed by Jean Nouvel, an architectcelebrated in France and throughout the world for the uniqueway in which he “dematerializes” architectural structure. He alsofamously designed the Institut du Monde Arabe (1987) and theMusée du Quai Branly (2006), both in Paris. For the externalfaçade, he designed a glass screen running parallel to theboulevard Raspail that would prolong the boulevard’sperspective. Behind this transparent wall, a cedar of Lebanonplanted by Chateaubriand in 1823 emerges from a monumentalflower pot clad with multi-colored mosaics, a witty creation bythe Italian designer Alessandro Mendini. Above the entrance tothe building rises a wall of plants commissioned in 1998 fromPatrick Blanc, a specialist in tropical botany and the creator ofthis innovative design.

AddressRue Saint-Guillaume 1375007 ParisFrance

. Interior designer Chareau joined efforts with licensed architectBernard Bijvoet to design what would be part gynological clinicfor Dr. Dalsace and part private residence for the doctor and hiswife, Annie. The remarkable Maison de Verre (glass house) wasinserted into an existing building and is one of the greatesthouses of the International Style, adding materials the movementhad never used before in such an extent to create a work ofarchitectural genius -- a structure that is fully functional and fullyaesthetic in its simplicity. The steel frame allowed for completefreedom of internal space. The glass block wall itself, is able tostand alone without a heavy frame breaking its pattern.Ventilation through the glass block wall is provided by a series ofmovable traps. A not-so-complicated weight and pulley systemopens the window panels, allowing for natural ventilation. Thisunique system causes a minimum of visual impact on the glassfacade of the structure.

. The car manufacturer with the handsomest (red-and-white)garages is undoubtedly Citroën. Following in the footsteps offounder André Citroën, who regarded architecture as animportant part of his marketing strategy, architect ManuelleGautrand built the company the ultimate showroom on theChamps-Elysées in Paris. Gautrand used the glass of the facetedwindow as a symbol of the marque's creativity andinnovativeness. She fused the corporate logo with the façadestructure: the frame is made up of inverted V-shapes. Behind theskin is the spectacle of a completely open space in which cars aredisplayed in a metres-high tower.

Centre Georges Pompidou.

AddressPlace Georges Pompidou 175191 ParisFrancehttp://www.centrepompidou.fr

. Centre Georges Pompidou is a complex in the Beaubourg area ofthe IVe arrondissement of Paris, near Les Halles and the Marais. It houses the Bibliothèque publique d'information, a publiclibrary, the Musée National d'Art Moderne, and IRCAM, a centrefor music and acoustic research. The building was designed by thearchitects Renzo Piano, Richard Rogers and Sue Rogers andengineers Peter Rice and Edmund Happold, whose design was notpopular at first. However, under the guidance of its firstdirector, Pontus Hultén, it quickly became a noted attraction inParis. The Pompidou 'revolutionized museums,' the Pritzker jurysaid, 'transforming what had once been elite monuments intopopular places of social and cultural exchange, woven into theheart of the city. The characteristic piping is colour-codedaccording to the contents: yellow for electricity, red fortransport, blue for water, and green for air.' [Wikipedia.org]

. The aim of this project was to regroup on a single site all theservices of the Ministry of Culture, previously dispersed over 17different locations around the city. Architect Francis Solerresolved the major constraints -disparity in dates and indifferentarchitectural style of the two existing buildings- into elements ofunity and identity. This unity is omnipresent in the internal spaceplanning: the two buildings have been remodelled in theirsubstance to require the obtained density, optimize work spacesand interconnect the different floor levels. The other unifyingelement is purely architectural. In the manner of Christo, Solerhas wrapped the old buildings, walls and roof included, in acontinuous organic-weave mesh of steel lace. Without entirelyeffacing underlying differences, this stainless steel veil impartscontinuity to the disparate volumes. It hangs like a loose netdetached from the elevations, its appearance changing in phasewith the sun, shadows, day and night.

Niemeyer hascreated a beautiful building. He wanted a simple constructionwithout ornament. The walls of the Place du Colonel Fabien havekept the marks of the wooden boards used to build them. OscarNiemeyer said the headquarters was ''a piece of work which willconstitute in this city, I am sure, an example of contemporaryarchitecture, and even, permit me to say, a tourist attraction.''The main conference room with metal slates hanging vertically onthe walls is situated below ground level and has Niemeyer desksand chairs. The villa was designedfor a rich insurer, Mr. Savoye, and was the result of several yearsof formal research which revolutionised the traditional codes ofresidential architecture. The building was constructed in the formof a white parallelepiped with a smooth exterior surfacepunctuated by a row of windows. It is supported by thin pillarsand topped by a roof-terrace. . The park occupies the site where the Citroën factory stood from1915-1970. The park is split into several parts. The White Gardenis tree-lined, with little foliage which opens on to the neighboringarea. In its center there is a patio with white flowering plants. The Dark Garden is a sort of enclosed labyrinth, highly shadedwith very dense and dark vegetation and terraces giving on to asmall square. The Central Park consists of a large, rectangularexpanse of lawn, diagonally sliced by a walkway. On the southside of the lawn are two very large, fifteen meter-highgreenhouses, which also function as sitting-rooms and are themedin correspondence with the adjacent Theme Gardens. Bothgreenhouses are bordered by dozens of closely trimmed Magnoliatrees and separated by a pavement of 120 individual dancingfountains. This ‘futuristic’ park was supposed to foreshadow theleisure spaces of the third millennium, but is that reflects today’sreality? The opinions are unfortunately various.

. The central courtyard of the museum, on the axis of theChamps-Élysées, is occupied by the Louvre Pyramid, which servesas the main entrance to the museum. This leads into a newcentral circulation space for the main wings of the galleries andas a visual centre point for the vast sprawling exterior. Thechallenge for celebrity architect I.M. Pei was to create a designthat would accomplish its task while at the same time allow theLouvre Museum to remain the focus of attention. The solution hecame up with was a series of glass pyramids. The structures jutinto the sky to draw the gaze of tourists and let them know this iswhere they should be. But at the same time it allows both themand the Parisians the ability to see through it and revel in theelder architectural masterpiece. The project also included theconstruction of a shopping mall, cultural center, an auditorium, and parking garages.

The Cinémathèquebuilding was wittily named "the dancer raising her tutu" by itscreator. It faces a park on one side and features a reception hallwhich makes use of space and light in a very nice way, contrasting with the elevation made of white stone on the sidefacing Bercy Street. The inside spaces, reconverted by thearchitect Dominique Brard, make use of an abundance of inclinedplanes which enable communication between the differentvolumes and the great number of overlaped levels. [from theproject's website] Cinémathèque Française hosts the largestarchive of films, movie documents, and film-related objects inthe world. It holds daily screenings of a variety of films from allover the world.

Masséna Housing.

AddressRue Françoise Dolto 75013 ParisFrance

. Almost all of Paris’s social housing authorities have revampedtheir building strategies. The shift dates to the inauguration ofMayor Bertrand Delanöe, a socialist and a design advocate who, with others, knew the banlieue was an issue long before theriots. The city is now building better social architecture, aimingto reverse social housing’s negative stigma. One of these projectsis an unusual concrete building, built for the Société Anonymed’Economie Mixte Immobilière Interdépartementale in theformerly industrial Masséna area by Beckmann-N’Thépé. Thebuilding’s center is carved out about three levels up to create alofted courtyard, while side portions are also cut out to createseveral rooftop gardens. The structure contains 48 flats, commerce, and an underground garage (text from ArchitecturalRecord).

Coeur Défense.

AddressVoie des Bâtisseurs 92044 ParisFrance

. This is the biggest corporate project built in Europe in recentdecades: 350.000 m2 of floor space. It stands in the 'heart' of LaDéfense, beside the historic east-west axis that runs from theLouvre to the Grand Arch. There are two twin towers 180m high, linked by an 'inter-tower', and three low buildings, all federatedby a large atrium that rises to a height of 44 metres over anhectare of floor space. The typology chosen shuns the model ofthick towers, preferring thin, streamlined volumes that generatework spaces near glazed façades, and thus open to daylight. Theatrium is a complex space sitting on a three-level base, thehighest of which connects to the Charles de Gaulle Esplanade andprovides access to all the buildings, restaurants, services andconference centre. 10.000 people work in this huge set. The fivebuildings of the set enter into rythmic play and express tauteffort in their clean skins, clean lines and curved edges (text fromwebsite architect).
