. How to get thereFrom the train station at the city centre there are several busesgoing in the direction of the university campus.

.

University Library.

AddressCampus Universitário de Santiago 3810-193 AveiroPortugalhttp://www.ua.pt

. The library plays a central role in the organisation of theuniversity campus situated on the edge of the city of Aveiro. Afree-standing curving wall characterises the western façade andexpresses the reinforced concrete structure of the building. Thisbaffle admits reflected light while a continuous horizontal cut atthe third level assures (for those seated) a visual connectionacross the sait marshes extending to the horizon. All electricaland air-conditioning services are integrated into the perimetershelving system at each floor allowing the ceilings to be leftuncluttered and spatially continuous with the vertical voids whichtraverse the interior spaces. This configuration also permits thespatial continuity of the double curvature of the ceiling at the topfloor.

.

Rectory of Universidade Nova deLisboa

.AddressTravessa Estevão Pinto 1099-085 LisbonPortugalhttp://www.unl.pt/reitoria/rectory-building

. The site used to be remote – a land of farms and desolate ground– is the location of the Campolide Campus of the UniversidadeNova de Lisboa. With the former Jesuit School, it creates a publicsquare of imposing scale and provides a three-dimensionalexpression to the entrapped territory. The program is divided intotwo distinct zones. Administrative offices are located in a slendertower overlooking Monsanto Park. Large scale foyers, meetingrooms and auditoriums are set at the base of the building, housedwithin a plinth that marks the difference in level between thepublic square and the school plateau. The rising tower has thesame height of the three-floor School building. Its façades areclad in white stone with an abstract layout of fenestrationconcealing the many levels of the building. The public square andgrand steps leading up to it are clad in the same stone. Thesemore symbolic and formal spaces are carved and sculpted withinthe plinth.

.

Moura Mixed-Use Building.

AddressPraça de Sacadura Cabral 7860 MouraPortugal

. This building is part of the restauration of an old building thatfaced the square in front of the castle of Moura. The interventionmeant to create new façades in some of the historical streets, while providing commercial space on the inside. The main featureof this building is the way the façade is constructed. By usingsimple openings, the architects created a façade system thattends to be very expressive on sunny summer days. In theinterior, a public patio was created resembling a cloister.

.

Barreiro College of Technology.

AddressQuinta dos Fidalguinhos BarreiroPortugal

. The site assigned for the School is located in the outskirts of thecity of Barreiro. The location had at one end a dense forest ofcork and large pine trees. There are some projects that cause apublic reaction even before its existence, with a great deal ofimportant matters to consider. This school is such an example. The inhabitants of this neighbourhood protested because theywanted a primary school instead – which was transferredelsewhere –, and because they feared the impact a building oflarge proportions would have, both visually and ecologically.Fearing that the trees would be cut down, they counted andmarked every single one. So we gave the building an ambiguouscharacter. On one hand it "dissipates" and accepts the prevalenceof the natural elements, on the other hand it deals with theirpresence as an artificial element of abstract origin. This principleis highlighted by the constructive choices: big coal-grey blockthat, when sectioned, reveals a white interior.

.

College of Business Administration.

AddressManteigadas SetúbalPortugal

. The building is located at the Campus, outside the city. In theabsence of a general order for the spatial planning, the alreadybuilt structures on Campus seem to have grown autonomously, without apparent relation. The only obligations imposed were thenumber of floors (2-3), the relative location of the new buildingand the maintenance of the many (and beautiful) cork trees. Theprogram contained classrooms, laboratories, lbrary, auditoriums, teacher's dens, administration bureau and management bodies, covering a rough area of 129.000 ft². We could not find an emptyland parcel with the necessary dimension for such a big volume,so we chose to build on 2 lots, separated by the Campus's road.Given the autonomy verified in the pre-existent buildings, wewanted this new school to communicate clearly to its neighbourstructures, thus giving the first boost to a broad collective vision, and the smallness of the available land lots forced us to acloseness with the existing constructions.

Canteen.

AddressCircular Interna 3000-033 CoimbraPortugalhttp://www.ci.uc.pt/english/

. The canteen is situated on the new Campus III of the Universityof Coimbra. Situated on the edge of the campus, looking awayfrom the city and facing its main road ring, the canteen is thebuilt result of a competition won back in 2001 by theLisbon-based architectural practice, LGLS. Conditioned by asharply sloping site and a limited budget, the project quicklyevolved into a play of scale, space, light and colour that offers asurprisingly large and luminous interior wrapped in what at firstsight seems to be a fairly compact external package. Publicaccess is at the upper level. The building then developsdownwards, generating its strongest external moment at theopposite end from the entry point, thereby twisting the meaningof 'main facade' and allowing for an internal shift in scale thatmakes the light-flooded refectory so impressive. The internalcolour scheme, tied to distinct ceiling heights, clearly defines theinternal functions and instinctively organizes the users.

Glicínias Housing.

AddressR. Dr. Mário Sacramento 3810 AveiroPortugal

. In a country like Portugal, where education still lags behind formost of the population, taste -like other matters- is still in thatphase in which it requires some kind of reform. As taste affectsthe reception of architecture -as much as it does any othercultural production- this is also a question that has to be dealtwith by architects. Ricardo Vieira de Melo, architect of thishousing block in Aveiro, not only participates in the improvementof taste that is slowly and subversively sweeping the country, healso manages to produce exciting, powerful and non-conformistarchitecture at the same time. The rationale behind hisundulating aluminium façades is both technical and aesthetic. They reduce noise pollution from a busy road. They reduce thebulk of the building. They echo and augment the dynamicmovement of traffic. And last, but not least, they abandon thegeometric rigidity of the modernist slab. And at the same time, however, these façades are engaged in altering taste.

Bouça Housing Complex.

AddressRua da Boavista 3684100 PortoPortugal

. This project, from 1973, was integrated in the program SAAL inPorto to create social housing for poor people. And even thoughit was made through highly controlled costs, Siza Vieira managedto create a housing complex that is worth studying and visiting. In 1977 there where only two blocks completed. Nowadays, in2004, all the blocks were concluded and a new life was given tothis complex. Instead of having only poor people living here, thelow prices and high quality living attracted artists, architects andyoung couples to settle in. With four levels, each block presentan articulation in terms of passages that connect the wholecomplex. Together with the housing units there is alsocommercial spaces and green open spaces.

Malagueira Housing.

AddressR. do Alto da Azinheira 57000 ÉvoraPortugal

. Here the architectural forms typical of the Alentejo, squarehouses painted a blinding white with broad chimneys and fewwindows, confront Modernist volumetric experiments, conferringon this part of the city a uniformity that is, however, subtlydisrupted by a modern version of an aqueduct consisting ofabove-ground supply lines. Tempering what might otherwise betoo "white and orthogonal" a site, this structure, arching over theneighbourhood, seems to avenge the absence of history that anycity built from the ground up necessarily represents. Here, Siza'sapparently simple mixture of typologies results in an impressiveurban complexity.

Terraços de Bragança.

AddressRua do Alecrim 391100 LisbonPortugal

. The housing project Terraços de Bragança occupies an area of5000m2 of the historical city centre of Lisbon. There is a greatsense of responsibility of the architect to maintain a certaindialogue with the existing buildings and it results in a buildingthat is at the same time very modern but with a lot of localinspirations and elements. The main façades are covered withstone Lioz and the blue tiles, traditional of Portugal. Behind thebuilding of the street there is the other building of the housingcomplex with a very contemporary kind of drawing, catching thetremendous views, facing south to the river Tejo.

Housing Complex.

AddressRua Martim Velho 4900 Viana do CasteloPortugal

. The block building unifies two previously separated sectors, andhas four floors, sitting on top of two other ones for undergroundparking. The ground-floor was designed for commerce, the firstfloor for one-storey apartments, and the second and third floorsfor two-storey apartments, with access by a gallery. The gallery,a meeting place, has been dimensioned as an airway, and ismainly located on the North side of the building. It crosses thestreet separating the two units, and provides the constructedmasses with the formal and operating unity required.Atground-floor level, the central apexes have been left empty, thereby visually and functionally uniting the two commonareas. This design was an opportunity to realize a city by meansof architecture, in what is most relevant in urban living: publicspaces. Between family architecture and public facilities, a seriesof spaces were conceived, ranging from the public to thesemi-private, from the open to the confined.

. This is maybe one of the least known works of Alvaro Siza, thisgarden and school is an exemplary work where a minimum ofresources are used to make an architecture of great formal andfunctional value. Here the specialistic drawing methods are takento the maximum of expressive language, only through sufficientlysimple and constructive systems.

In five hundred andeighty years the troubled ground of the Convento de SãoDomingos was also a Hospital, a Military base, a hostel, acinetheatre...Without any evidence of the old cloister, the Southfaçade is new and parallel to the aisles of the church. The Westfaçade was returned to its one time coarseness that used to facethe rural fence.

. a.s* attempt to find new architectural possibilities rather thanadopt existing models. Forced to start from a pre-existingelement (the old library) on the boundary of the Universitycampus, they have positioned the building as a pivotal point sothat it could create a new urban front. The way the new library isfitted into the city street is quite discreet; not that it goesunnoticed, but it is more expressive on the inside. The interiorappears as a single space divided by a system of ramps.Connecting the two tops of the building, these ramps structureit, acting like a 'promenade architecturale'. The new library is adeceptive building, offering different perceptions at every step.Natural light plays an important role in this, as it is carefullycontrolled. Entering the building through ceiling openings, itcreates different environments throughout the day. It rests on theconcrete walls, exposing their raw texture and invoking thevolcanic landscapes of the Azores.

José Saramago Municipal Library.

AddressRua 4 de Outubro 192670 LouresPortugal

. The new Public Library of Loures, one of Lisbon's satellite towns, faces a landscape of banality. Building a library in a crowdedplace sounds reasonable, except that people nowadays are asmuch alienated from reading cities and their visual culture in acritical way as they are from reading books. In his choice of aclean aluminium cladding, Fernando Reis Martins correctlyappropriates the banality of the post-industrial, whilst on theother hand, the wooden entrance 'tunnel' that traverses thelibrary and defines its central axis speaks of comfort andwelcome. It vaguely resembles the famous church entrance byTadao Ando, as it also uses simple wood craftmanship to conveyproximity and warmth. In the main hall, Martins contrasts theseelements with the stark boldness of high concrete walls. In its useof industrial banality transformed by qualities of composition andprecision, the new library conveys a sense of 'reading' with a newsensibility through readily available materials.

The volumeresembles an old train wagon, lifted slightly off the groundturning it into a light and welcoming space. The used materialswere chosen according to the environment, following thetextures and colours of the nature. The structure and wall panelsare made out of wood and the windows are sheets of transparentpolycarbonate located at the height of the children withawesome views to the gardens. The design of the school makesreference to the inner space of a cloister. "The challenge ofcreating an “inner” external environment with acoustic and livingcharacteristics and of a scale hardly reachable in the centre ofthe city led us to explore, up to its limits, the relation of thebuilding – as mass and volume, and the programmatic contentthereof, with the empty space of the patio with a size of 100 x 40m. Beyond its use as a meeting area, this space will also be ableto function as an extension of the classrooms and allow for theperformance of small, open-air concerts. In general, the areasurrounding the patio has only one floor."
