Introduction

The Desire of Ages, p.83

It would be well for us to spend a thoughtful hour each day incontemplation of the life of Christ. We should take it point bypoint, and let the imagination grasp each scene, especially theclosing ones. As we thus dwell upon His great sacrifice for us, ourconfidence in Him will be more constant, our love will bequickened, and we shall be more deeply imbued with His spirit. Ifwe would be saved at last, we must learn the lesson of penitenceand humiliation at the foot of the cross. (DA 83.4)

Why study on humility?

1 Jesus invites us to this study.Matthew 11:29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for Iam meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto yoursouls.

2 So as to commune with God.Isaiah 57:15 For thus saith the high and lofty One thatinhabiteth eternity, whose name [is] Holy; I dwell in the highand holy [place], with him also [that is] of a contrite andhumble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revivethe heart of the contrite ones.

3 So as to receive grace.1 Peter 5:5 Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto theelder. Yea, all [of you] be subject one to another, and beclothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and givethgrace to the humble.

Why study on humility?

It is a basis for a successful prayer life.2 Chronicles 7:14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turnfrom their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and willforgive their sin, and will heal their land.

Humility is the foundation around which other graces areclustered.

It is the attitude with which we receive God’s Word.James 1:21 Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity ofnaughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.

The life of Jesus: a paragon of humility

The prerequisite for understanding and appreciating thehumility of Jesus is a thorough understanding of the HolyTrinity.

It has been said that the ”The mind is a measure of a man”.

Philippians 2:5-8

Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who,being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal withGod: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him theform of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And beingfound in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and becameobedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

Jesus equal with God

Hebrews 1 tells us about the Divinity of Jesus, on the otherhand, Hebrews 2 tells us of the humanity of Jesus.

Hebrews 1:8 But unto the Son [he saith], Thy throne, O God,[is] for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness [is] thesceptre of thy kingdom.

God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit areThree equal co-eternal Persons.

The life of Jesus: a Paragon of humilityHe made Himself of no reputation

HE EMPTIED HIMSELF

It was His voluntary choice.John 10:17 Therefore doth my Father love me, because I laydown my life, that I might take it again.

All the while when Jesus was on earth,He was 100% God and 100% human. His divine prerogativeswere within His reach.

The greatest temptation He had was to depend on His divinity.John 5:30 I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, Ijudge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine ownwill, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.

In the likeness of men

He was 100% human.Hebrews 2:14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers offlesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of thesame; that through death he might destroy him that had thepower of death, that is, the devil...

He depended entirely on the Father as any man does.Hebrews 5:7-8 Who in the days of his flesh, when he hadoffered up prayers and supplications with strong crying andtears unto him that was able to save him from death, and washeard in that he feared; Though he were a Son, yet learned heobedience by the things which he suffered...

The life of Jesus: a Paragon of humilityJesus: a humble servant

The glory of Christ is that He came to serve.

John 13:3 Jesus knowing that the Father had given all thingsinto his hands, and that he was come from God, and went toGod; He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; andtook a towel, and girded himself. After that he poureth waterinto a basin, and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and towipe [them] with the towel wherewith he was girded.

Jesus demonstrated His love in foot washing.John 13:1 Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesusknew that his hour was come that he should depart out of thisworld unto the Father, having loved his own which were in theworld, he loved them unto the end.

True humility is seen not in how many people serve you but inhow many you serve. (John 10:15)

The life of Jesus: a Paragon of humilityHumble unto death, even the second death

Humble in the face of death

The Saviour could not see through the portals of the tomb.Hope did not present to Him His coming forth from the gravea conqueror, or tell Him of the Father’s acceptance of thesacrifice. He feared that sin was so offensive to God that Theirseparation was to be eternal. Christ felt the anguish which thesinner will feel when mercy shall no longer plead for the guiltyrace. It was the sense of sin, bringing the Father’s wrath uponHim as man’s substitute, that made the cup He drank sobitter, and broke the heart of the Son of God. DA 753.2

John 19:30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, hesaid, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up theghost.

Conclusion

RH, July 5, 1887 par. 9

In consideration of this, can men have one particle of exaltation? As they trace down the life and sufferings and humiliation ofChrist, can they lift their proud heads as though they were to bearno trials, no shame, no humiliation? I say to the followers of Christ,Look to Calvary, and blush for shame your self-important ideas. Allthis humiliation of the Majesty of heaven was for guilty, condemnedman. He went lower and lower in his humiliation, until there wereno lower depths that he could reach in order to lift man up fromhis moral defilement. All this was for you who are striving for thesupremacy–striving for human praise, for human exaltation; youwho are afraid you will not receive all that deference, that respectfrom human minds, that you think is your due. Is this Christ-like?
