From the Principal’s Desk…………... Welcome to Term 2 Week 7 at Kilmore Primary School. I hope you are all braving the wintery conditions well. Between you and me, I am over it already! In true style, our grade one children did not notice the cold conditions on Monday as they enjoyed an amazing excursion to Edenvale Park in Eltham. The excursion formed part of the students’ sustainability program for this term. I would like to thank staff for organising the experience and the parent helpers who volunteered to attend and support the program. Grade two students head off to Eltham today and our Foundation children have their first ever excursion to Bundoora Park on Thursday. Enjoy! Over the weekend, some maintenance was done to the car park on Sutherland Street. I would like to thank Gerard from Hanson Constructions Kilmore who organised the donation of the crushed rock to fill the potholes. Thanks also to Graham Palmateer, father of Charlie 5J, who generously donated his time, expertise and equipment to spread the rock. The school does not receive any funds to maintain this area and without the generosity of the community, it would continue to deteriorate. Kilmore Primary School received some funds at the start of this year to go towards facilities maintenance. Every school underwent a conditions assessment audit several years ago. From the audit, each school received a report, which prioritises future maintenance needs. As funds become available schools are given amounts to address the identified areas. When we are notified that some money is being given we are told where it has to be spent. The funds we received were tagged to upgrade the painting, flooring and general condition of the administration block, reseal the floor in the hall, paint the two student toilet blocks and lower the basins in the infant toilets so the taps are more accessible to students. Over term one and two, I have been gathering quotes and going through the complex process of gaining approval for the works. It is with great pleasure that I can say we are finally ready to have the work done. I am hoping that most of the work will be completed over the school holidays. It will be great to have a fresh, bright and inviting area to showcase Kilmore Primary School and the toilet and hall upgrades will be greatly welcomed as well. Help Needed!
To prepare for the facilities upgrade I do need to have several pin boards from the administration block removed and relocated. The boards are screwed to the wall in the four corners. If you have the time and expertise to do this and would like to help the school can you please contact me. If we have to pay to get this done it will have to come out of school funds which means out of money that would be otherwise put into resources for children. Every bit helps. Facebook
This week you received the exciting news about the start of our Kilmore Primary School official Facebook page. Registration forms were sent home but we will attach another copy to this newsletter in case you missed out. Michelle Villinskis, grade 1V teacher, will be taking some well-earned Long Service Leave starting next week. Maureen Buggy will take her grade for the two weeks and ensure that continuity of program is maintained for all students. Maureen is very familiar with our school and in particular this grade, so they are all in good hands.
Congratulations Mr Thompson I would like to congratulate Brendan Thompson, our ICT Lead Teacher. Brendan has been seconded to Melbourne to work on a special project for the Department for term three. This is an exciting opportunity for Brendan and we wish him well. The good news for us is that he is returning to KPS in term four. ICT classes will run as normal and we are making plans to ensure the ICT services, IPad program and KPS News initiative are maintained while Brendan is away.

Hi everyone, Just to update you about the Premiers’ Reading Challenge… We have received lots of registration forms from students already - there has been a lot of interest from Foundation students and 4T!!! We have now entered and officially registered all the students who have submitted their forms. We have put together an information pack about the Challenge for all students who have registered. It includes information about how to participate in the challenge, the rules, the reading list and how to access challenge books.
Information packs, along with students’ usernames and passwords, will be distributed to students soon after they register. Students and parents are responsible for entering the books students read throughout the challenge online at ; https://www.eduweb.vic.gov.au/Challenger/WebLogin.aspx Our school library has lots of Challenge books. We also have some additional copies of Challenge books that students can borrow. Foundation to Year 2, can borrow books from Ms White. Students in Year 3-4 can borrow books from Mrs Trawn and students in Year 5-6 can borrow books from Mr Williamson. Hello Everyone, We are excited to tell you about how our Biggest Morning Tea went! On the 17th of May 2017, we had a great time with the whole school enjoying morning tea together to raise money for the Cancer Council. We saw some yummy cakes being eaten. We had a great time on the day and we loved how many donations we received.
Together we raised $231.10! We all want to help those who have been impacted by cancer. Thank you

$353.66 raised through School Banking in Term 1!
Thanks to the fantastic efforts of our students we have raised $353.66 for our school through School Banking commissions in term 1. Our school receives $5 when a student makes their first ever School Banking deposit and 5% on every deposit made through the school (to a maximum of $10 per individual deposit). These funds will go towards Numeracy Resources as part of the Fundraising Targets list for this year. Saving regularly is an important habit to get into, whether you're saving a little or a lot. Keep up the great work and remember, School Banking day is every Tuesday.

of June at 9 am in the Stadium Hello, do you want a fun and easy way to be involved with KPS, then come and learn more about our new Friends and Family of Kilmore Primary School, which is an exciting new group and opportunity for everyone to join in. It doesn’t matter if you can only spare an hour a few times a term, or if you can be involved on a weekly basis, we want you! It is all to benefit the kids and families of KPS. The major role of this exciting new group is up to you. The group can be what you want it to be! We want to know what it is that the families and friends of KPS want, for example what activities would you enjoy sharing with your children at school? Please come along, join in the conversation, meet some new faces and enjoy some morning tea.
We have met once and it was a great chance to make new friends and find out what things we can do for our kids and KPS. We will be looking at improving the ways in which we can communicate the great things that are happening in and around KPS, the new school Facebook page will certainly help and we will be adding some more information to the newsletters. Some of the exciting ideas that we discussed were ways to improve the amount of rubbish that taints our beautiful school grounds, Murray suggested we get the kids to paint their school bins, we think the kids would love that, so keep an eye out on ways to help or for the new look bins coming soon. Jody suggested we have class compost bins, we can use the compost on the school gardens and at the same time reduce our overall landfill. This is a great way to reinforce the information that all classes have been learning with sustainability. Win, Win, Win. We will also be looking at having a book swap shop for the kids. Stay tuned for some more of the great ideas to come.
If you were unable to attend on Wednesday the 17th of May, don’t despair, it isn’t too late. We are
hoping that more family and friends will join in. If you are able to attend on the 12th of June, we

Growing in the Garden at KPS The weather sure is confusing with days of bright sunshine and blue skies, and others of grey clouds and heavy rain. On the next sunny day make sure you take a walk around the school grounds. It has been a busy term with the Foundation students planting flower bulbs, some grade 4’s planting garlic, grade 2’s looking after the school chooks and the Autumn leaves decorating the ground. Did you know that most Wednesday’s students can volunteer their lunch time and help in the garden? It is a great way to make friends, learn about gardening, and most of all have fun. This is all thanks to Tina (our school gardener) and a few parents volunteering their time. The more adult helpers we have the more kids can join in the fun. If you could spare an hour on Wednesday to help WE WOULD LOVE TO HAVE YOU, and you don’t even need to know anything about gardening. All you need is your ‘Working With Children Check’card registered at the office (if you don’t have a card we can help you apply).

Facebook Launch Dear Parents, Guardians and friends of Kilmore Primary School, It is with great pleasure that we announce the launch of Kilmore Primary School’s official Facebook page. We’re very excited about implementing one of the most powerful communication devices since the telephone and moving forward with the way we connect with our modern parents. Research tells us that 70% of all Australians between the ages of 15 to 65 are using Facebook. We also see that in excess of 80% of Facebook users log in every day. Placing our school communications in a space where our community goes to often makes a lot of sense. The Facebook page will be a place where parents/guardians can ask questions, get reminders about school events and share school related information. We are expecting this to be a great place for helpful communication for all members of our school community. As per the Facebook policy, this is a closed group so only members of the page will be able to see posts and comments on the page. If you are keen to be on the FB page, please fill out the ‘Request to Join KPS Facebook Page’ form. If you have multiple family members (e.g. Mum, Dad, Nan) who all want to be a part of the group please grab some extra join forms from the office as every person will need to fill out and sign a form. Once you have filled out the form, please hand to the office, who will hand these forms onto the administrators of the page. They will then be able to send you an invite link via email. Once you request to join and we check against your form, then you will be a member ready to contribute to the page. Anyone wishing to join the FB group must read our FB policy and code of conduct before signing the request form. We are relying on all those using the page to do so in a tone and spirit that helps us to build a strong and connected school community. We do want to be good social media role models for our children. As this group is brand new there will no doubt be some teething problems, please contact the admins on the page if you have any issues via private message and they will endeavor to answer any questions you may have. Our Facebook Page Intent Our intent is to grow our school and community’s understanding of social media and to make connecting with our school more convenient. We wish our content to be more accessible and to also tap into the knowledge and support base of our parent community. Our school’s Facebook page allows our community to keep up to date with activities through a medium preferred by many. Our Facebook page is a place where we build our community by building school spirit and provide an avenue for easy access to information.
Our Code of Conduct Application Form All users must complete an application form prior to becoming an approved member of the group. Using Names in Posts Names can be used in posts when you wish to acknowledge someone’s great work or community contribution. We wish our Facebook page to be used to build spirit; patting someone on the back publicly goes a long way to building the school we all want. Interacting with the Facebook Page Users will be able to author a posting of their own which will be approved by an administrator. Users will also be able to ‘like’ a post or comment by clicking on the like button. Under Age Facebook Users Kilmore Primary School does not endorse children under the 13 year old threshold imposed by Facebook creating their own Facebook account. We encourage children under parental supervision to view our school’s Facebook page and contribute to content. We believe our communities conduct on our Facebook page will serve as role modelling for our students as to how to behave in social media spaces. Friending Teachers on Facebook Our teachers operate under a code of conduct that states that they are to maintain a professional relationship with students and parents. Implementation:
Our school believes a Facebook page is an excellent and contemporary way to communicate information to, and celebrate our success, with members of the community.
Information posted to our Facebook page will be approved by administrators. Posts will contain information such as reminders of events, calendar dates, celebrations of student learning and achievement, and links to other important information that may be available periodically on our school website.
Photos of people will not be posted or approved.
The Facebook page will not be the sole mechanism for distributing important information. It will be stated clearly that there is no requirement for parents, students or staff to ‘Like’ or follow our Facebook page.
All users interacting with the school Facebook page, by either liking or commenting on posts must have completed the school’s Facebook registration form available from the office.
Our school encourages families to share positive comments in relation to current events. We remind members of our community that there are many issues which are best dealt with privately, in consultation with relevant staff members. Issues involving students or staff must not be raised on our Facebook page.
Users will be able to comment on all postings and on comments by other users unless commenting has been disabled. Users will also be able to ‘Like’ a post or comment by clicking on the ‘Like’ button. Hello everyone! Guess what? My first day of school was 30th May 2016, which means I’ve now been coming to KPS for one whole year! I love coming to school and am always the first one awake in my house each morning. When the alarm goes off I bounce out of bed. I can’t wait to eat my breakfast, jump in the car and see all my friends at school. Thank you for always making me feel so welcome.
It’s been a week of excursions for my F – 2
friends, report writing for my teacher friends
and a little bit of everything for me. I
channelled my inner rock star when I
stumbled across a Rock Band rehearsal. They
practise at least once a week at lunchtime with
Mr Thompson. Their singer was missing, so I
offered to fill in. I wonder if they’ll ask me to
join the band on a more pawmanent basis…
Below: Last week was Education Week. The theme was Healthy Mind, Healthy Body. Mrs
Sperling and Miss Jeffs planned a week full of ‘healthiness’ for us all. I visited one of the lunchtime
activities. Turns out I’m not very good at hula hooping, but I gave it my best shot! And I didn’t even try
to eat it. One way to help our minds to stay healthy is to have some down time each day. Some of my
Grade 6 friends told me about mindfulness colouring and an app called Smiling Mind. I tried my paw at
colouring but couldn’t quite get my mind off a packet of chips I could see out the corner of my eye.
I went to library with Grade 2C. I ‘tippawed’ out of
my office and sat down to listen to Miss Cocks read
a story. I love it when people come to the library to
see me. Oh, and the books too of course.
Speaking of books…. Ms White and Mr Williamson have been hard at work organising our registrations for the Premiers’ Reading Challenge. I’ve been listening to lots of books and have started to register my books on the website Ms White and Mr Williamson gave me. The address is https://www.eduweb.vic.gov.au/Challenger/WebLogin.aspx. Younger
students like myself don’t have to read all the books by
ourselves. We can listen to them and help older people read
them. If you want to read the Challenge books, visit Ms White (F
-2 students), Mrs Trawn (3/4 students) or Mr Williamson (5/6
students). Yesterday I listened to a very special book read by
one of my Grade 2 friends. I met the author when I visited SEDA
earlier in the year and I think the main character looks a little
like me. In fact, it could almost be me! Except for the fact his
name is Sam. And he graduated from SEDA. But apart from that,
we’re practically twins. Happy reading!
I’m a very good listener and I’ve heard some more things which made me smile. “Asha, what did you get on the beep test? Wait, have you ever actually done the beep test?” “Oh Asha, you’re awake!” No need to sound so surprised!

The Four Proficiencies – Fluency The proficiencies underpin all areas of the Mathematics curriculum. This week we find out a little more about ‘Fluency’. Students are fluent when they: - make reasonable estimates - calculate answers efficiently - recognise different ways of answering questions - recall definitions and regularly used facts - choose appropriate ways to find answers -manipulate equations to solve problems

Asha’s Raffle
Kilmore PS is holding a raffle to raise some funds to help look after Asha. Miss Marr, who comes to our school to teach when our own classroom teacher is away, has donated a fabulous children’s bike for us to raffle. Miss Crowther is more than happy to cover the cost of caring for Asha, however, as a school community we believe that Asha deserves our support as he is a great addition to our school. We thank Miss Marr for her kind donation of the bike. Tickets will be on sale every recess at the picnic tables for the next two weeks. Tickets are $1.00 each. We hope you can support the Asha raffle. That would be pawsome!!!!!!!!!

WE WANT OUR STUDENTS TO TELL US WHAT THEY THINK
We value student voice as a means to improving student engagement, wellbeing and quality
instruction and are conducting a survey to find out what your child thinks of our school. The
Attitudes to School survey is an annual student survey offered by the Department of Education
and Training to assist schools in gaining an understanding of students' perceptions and
experience of school. Our school will use the survey results to plan programs and activities to
improve your child's schooling experience.
The Department has updated the survey for 2017 to include important new measures that are
known to influence student engagement and performance. Students from Grades 4 - 6 at our
school will participate in the survey. Your child will complete the survey online during school
hours using a purpose built secure online survey tool. It is important to note that we are not in
any way “testing” your child. Your child has the right to refuse or withdraw from the survey at
any point before, during, or after completion of the survey.
Your child will be provided with a unique login to complete the survey. The student login is an
assigned identifier that may be used by the Department to combine data for research purposes
only. Your child’s privacy and the confidentiality of your child’s survey responses will be
protected at all times. No identifiable personal data is included in the survey response file.
The survey results will be reported back to the school in term 3. No student can be identified in
the results reported to schools or in any other report of the data. Last year we used the survey
results to improve student morale, student voice and wellbeing.
This year the Attitudes to School survey will be conducted at our school over the period
Thursday 1st of June to Friday 23
rd of June. The survey only takes 20-30 minutes to complete
and occurs during your child's class time.

Kilmore PS now has a TV Show!
Over the past few weeks a group of Grade 6 students have been thinking of ways to improve communication and student voice across the school. The KPS Fabulous Five News crew have been busy interviewing teachers and students, researching news topics and telling jokes. The episodes will be released each fortnight and played during a lunch eating time. They will also be displayed on the TV in the foyer. If you have any ideas for the TV show or events that could be covered, please contact Brendan Thompson.
