toyed with the idea of creating a By Appointment Only Design magazine for some

time. The title, MINE, is an acronym of "more is never enough", a

phrase that crops up daily at By Appointment Only Design HQ on

Chiltern Street. From the boutique – which we opened in 2010 – we

are able to offer clients a unique service beyond beautiful florals,

incorporating event planning and styling, alongside set design and

landscaping (see page 16 Why More Is Never Enough). So, for us, this

magazine was a chance to celebrate the past five years but also an

opportunity to celebrate the amazing people – clients, partners and

inspirational individuals – who we've met on our journey.

To feature these creative forces in our own magazine has been an

honour: among them, Australian interior designer Steve Cordony

(whose work you can see on page 38), culinary visionary Jonathan

Attwood (turn to page 56 for his party-throwing tips) and Francesco

Adams-Facchini, Fendi's European Visual Merchandising Manager

(fall for his style picks page 50). Not to mention the women in our

life: dear friend and Condé Nast Brides magazine's Fashion Editor,

Astrid Joss, who interviews Ralph & Russo exclusively for MINE on

page 8. And the beautiful Jessica Diner, from Birchbox, who treats us

to all things scented and floral on page 22.

We hope you enjoy this first issue of MINE as much as we have

loved creating it. The past five years have seen some highs – and lows

– for us both; we've cried, laughed, cried some more! But now we're

smiling. And seeing a client smile is all we ever care about; it shows

us, 'mission accomplished'.

Here's to the next five years.

at in front of the super duo that

are Ralph & Russo, I'm awestruck.

Everything about them is just that

– super. From their new, luxurious

Mayfair town house (grand, über chic, and super

exclusive), right through to their clientele,

including Beyoncé, Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth

Paltrow and more recently Blake Lively. It's no

secret they're inundated with red-carpet requests

daily, only of which very few – after careful

consideration – are granted. And then, of course,

there's the duo themselves. It's impossible to

underestimate their meteoric rise; they were

listed in 2013 Fortune magazine's "40 under 40" –

the only fashion label to be acknowledged.

The couture-only house was founded in 2007

by Australian couple Tamara Ralph (Creative

Director) and her fiancé, Michael Russo (CEO).

It has fast-tracked its way to become fashion

royalty, one of the first and only British fashion

houses to be elected by the Chambre Syndicale

de la Haute Couture to show at Paris Haute

Couture Week, alongside style stalwarts Armani,

Versace and Valentino. Yet the brand held its own,

getting nothing short of glowing reports from the

likes of Vogue and indeed the Chambre Syndicale's

former president, Didier Grumbach, who said:

"We expect savoir faire, which is being lost. And

they [Ralph & Russo] have it." This is the stuff

dreams are made of. And in the cut-throat world

of fashion, such praise is only possible thanks

to one factor: pure raw talent. Says Tamara of

her fashion provenance: "My grandmother and

mother were both couturiers. They taught me

what I know and by 10 I was designing. I couldn't

find anything [I wanted to wear], so I started

designing for myself." As a fashion journalist,

I can't quite ever remember being brought to

my knees by such designs, which at every turn

are nothing short of desperately clever. Tamara

has encapsulated what every woman wants –

feminine, romantic, timeless, elegant, youthful

and, dare I say it, fashionable clothing. Over

the years, I've worn, and had designed, a lot of

couture pieces but this time it's different. I slip

on a dress (which apparently Suki Waterhouse

wore the night before), and it's unlike anything

I've ever worn. The attached cape with large rose

shoulders create drama and glamour; its fitted

pencil skirt reaching a stylish mid-calf length, to

ensure I walk in a lady-like manner! Sky-scraper

heels – from the brand's ever-growing accessory

range – give the look an edge. And the '40s

buttons (the era along with the '50s that Tamara

claims inspire her) that line the back of the dress

give that extra je ne sais quoi. I look in the mirror.

I feel I could conquer any given social situation in

a heart beat. I'm ready to go forth.

Further still, Ralph & Russo's bridal gowns

are something extraordinary. Sophisticated,

show-stopping and extremely intricate, they

can take over 4,000 hours to make, with up

to 24 couturiers working on the gown at any

time. The finale bridal dress in the current 2015

collection features over 360 metres of tulle, 18,000

pearls and 30,000 crystals. You get the picture.

Combined with the Ralph & Russo treatment (as

a client the entire house is shut down for you – all

five floors!), this is something more than just a

couture experience, it's an actual journey to Planet

Fabulous. After all, this is a brand that uses 'palace

wear' in its vocabulary.

When all is said and done, what is most curious is

the team's very noticeable humility. There is a lot

of joking and laughing between them: they're the

type of people you want to make your best friends.

Tamara herself, who one might expect to be the real

diva, is almost bashful when paid a compliment.

Hasn't someone updated her on her recent success?

Of their speedy and phenomenal rise, Michael

is equally untainted. "I remember when I first

received the call from the president re Paris, I was

surprised… but for him to call me himself, isn't

that amazing?" They both stress that the whole

experience was a nerve-wracking one but as Tamara

points out, with uncharacteristic confidence: "I was

proud to show the brand off publicly." Yet it has to

be their deep underlying self belief that propelled

them this far. "We turned a lot down in the earlier

years," Tamara says. "We waited to come this far."

Fashion world domination, ticked off, what next

for Ralph & Russo? Tamara, if you're reading this,

please may I request a high-street partnership – a

one-off collection – so that we, the civilians, may all

have a turn in your designs. In the meantime, we'll

have to wait (with fingers crossed) and continue to

watch in awe as Ralph & Russo create more couture

wonders. Well, I guess that's OK. Fashion wouldn't

be the same without the untouchable inspirations.

Marble has moved on. It’s cool, always looks smart, and is no longer just restricted to floors, baths and vanity units. Marble is a sign of good taste, opulence and luxury. It’s says that you know what you are doing, but don’t want to show off. The print is everywhere – on clocks, mugs, clutch bags, it’s even on cushions and clothes. And where Balenciaga go, we follow. They’ve knocked up marble-effect dresses, skirts, sweaters and cropped jackets. But how to wear it? Stick to base tones: grey, white, nude, soft pink and black with a shot of jade green. This way it will blend in with everything. Wild, screaming shades like red, orange and yellow are over kill. It’s also the easiest way to upgrade your home – a candle-holder here, a gilded place-mat there. And a marble-looking accessory is also a clever add on – there’s so much jewellery to choose from; turn to Eddie Borgo or Chloé for costume bling and Kimberly McDonald’s sliced gems. In short, marble is marvellous.

In the past five years Tony Marklew and Javier Salvador of

By Appointment Only Design have been designing events and

creating fantastical florals for the high-fashion set (think Fendi,

Hermès, and Tom Ford, to name a few), as well as global bridal clients.

With a background in fashion and a deep love of interiors, their lifestyle

brand is rapidly expanding from their chic, newly renovated

Marylebone boutique…

While strong designers develop a style, and

constantly refer to it as a benchmark, Javier and

Tony from By Appointment Only Design have

taken a more contrary route. "The most important

thing is being a chameleon. Clients have their own

style but giving them something more than they

ever knew they wanted, that’s the secret to our

success," says Javier, By Appointment Only Design’s

front man who, in his own words, "brings in the

work while Tony makes the magic happen".

What’s clear to anyone who’s seen their work

is that both Javier and Tony are artists – with

backgrounds in theatre and fashion respectively –

they’re overflowing with ideas. So much so that on

a Friday evening, they’re still hard at work in their

new-look shop on Chiltern Street, Marylebone.

"When we moved in five years ago, the street was

dead and most importantly it was cheap." The store

was originally planned as a gift shop, with a few

flowers, but quickly became a workshop, too. "At

our peak we were doing 35 weddings a year," they

explain. "When we started we wanted to be 80%

events stylists with 20% focussed on flowers; and

somewhere along the way those numbers turned

themselves on their head." Now, with celebrity

clients including Eva Longoria, Oprah Winfrey

and luxury jewellery brand Harry Winston, they’ve

got a studio in Camden, a shop front in London's

five-star Corinthia Hotel and they’re taking the

Chiltern Street store in a whole new direction.

Artist James Nevill's plaster-work has given the

shop an industrial look, and the furniture, shelves

and everything on them have been expertly chosen

by Javier and Tony. "It’s all for sale," says Javier, ever

the salesman. At the back of the boutique there’s the

‘scent den’, and downstairs is a compact yet glittery

green cave, which will soon be an events space. The

room will be the creative home to collaborations

and workshops, with Thursdays playing host to

flower-arranging classes. Other days could entail

chocolate tasting, portrait painting or sculpture-

making, as well as evening launches for fashion and

fragrance houses. "Now The Chiltern Firehouse has

opened, the street’s a whole lot cooler. And we want

to create even more of a buzz," says Tony.

The By Appointment Only Design client list is

global and they provide flowers on a weekly basis

to clients as far away as Hong Kong. So, how does a

By Appointment Only Design week look? Monday

mornings start at 4.30am with everything from the

weekly deliveries to loyal and much-loved clients,

to landscape design projects that are in the pipeline.

"It’s exhausting; we don’t have a day off. But it’s

fabulous," says Javier. "Though, at times, we do want

to murder each other in the process!" chips in Tony.

With so much work, surely the boys get some

downtime? It's Friday night, after all. Tony starts to

laugh, "I had no idea that it even was Friday..."

MMeet fragrance aficionado Carlos Huber and it’s

hard not to get wrapped up in his world. The

way he talks about scent and life in general is

contagious. It’s a world of beautiful adjectives,

sensorial stories and fantasies of times gone by.

But then that’s exactly the point. You don’t have

to meet Carlos in person to experience his world,

because he is something of a storyteller through

his olfactive offering – the Arquiste Parfumer

collection. “There is something special about

participating in a sensorial experience that goes

beyond the material object," describes Carlos.

“A story, a dream or a captured moment [in

fragrance] adds inspiration to your purchase

and makes you smile. There is something more

sublime about it."

And if you smell his potions, you really are

experiencing something sublime. Take Carlos’

personal daily choice, The Architects Club, the

freshest of colognes: it’s like being transported

to London in the 1930s and taking a big slug of

a very dry gin Martini (“I started drinking gin

more when I began learning about fragrance – it’s

such a refined and fragrant liquor that’s amazing

for perfume!”).

But it’s with his floral scents that the range

really comes into its own: Fleur de Louis

(inspired by the 17th-century court of King

Louis XIV); Flor y Canto (reminiscent of ancient

Mayan rituals from Carlos’s native Mexico);

and Boutonnière no.7 (homage to the gardenia

corsages men would wear in their button holes to

go to the French Opera in the 19th century). “I

love gardenia. It’s my number 1!” enthuses Carlos,

“I can’t get enough of it. I also love tuberose – it’s

not so innocent and yet unbelievably fresh at the

2. Rose de Grasse eau de parfum, £135 for 50ml, Aerin: Made from rose petals hand-picked in the iconic harvests at Grasse – the French capital of perfumery – this is the ultimate rose scent.

3. Fleur de Portofino eau de parfum, £142 for 50ml, Tom Ford: If the bottle doesn’t seduce you, the blend of lemon, bergamot, gardenia, magnolia and jasmine will. 4. J’Adore Dior eau de parfum, £40 for 30ml, Dior: With notes of orchids, violets, rose and blackberry musk, it feels as modern today as the day it was launched.

5. Les Elixir Charnels in Floral Romantique eau de parfum, £185, Guerlain: The newest addition to this exclusive collection evokes the sensuality of tiare flower, lily and carnation underlined with smoky tea and chestnut essences.

6. Pleasures eau de parfum, £34 for 30ml, Estée Lauder: Its heady bouquet of rose, lilac, jasmine, peony, violet and lily is infused with patchouli and never fails to transport you.

Incorporate these other blooming marvellous floral scents into your summer beauty repertoire

same time. I generally love it when

flowers smell incredible straight from

the market, and that’s what I look for

in a floral fragrance."

How wonderfully apt, then, that

Carlos has made considered choices

of where to retail, opting for niche

buying experiences (such as By

Appointment Only Design’s floral

atelier), rather than traditional

mainstream beauty retailers. So,

what is it about buying a fragrance

in a flower shop that is so alluring?

“In a flower shop, all your senses are

engaged – you have the visual beauty

of the flowers, complemented by the

olfactive experience of the scent. The

encounter is live and in 3D, and is a

very special moment." He adds, “Time

is the biggest luxury in life, and to

experience that jewel of a moment,

like when you’re in a flower shop and

everything is in place, is the biggest

luxury of all." We couldn’t agree more,

Carlos. We couldn’t agree more.

8am: “Roll out of bed, brush my teeth and walk out to the point of Mal Pais and Santa Teresa in Costa Rica, where two long sandy surf beaches come to a rocky point. There is a wonderful hotel, The Milarepa, made up of little bungalows with a simple wooden platform. I’d go there and meet my yoga teacher, Rebecca Ttung, for a session looking out across the sea in the morning and then go in for a morning surf in the long, lazy waves there [pictured, above].”

10am: “Having worked up an appetite, I’d choose a traditional Mallorcan breakfast – rustic bread cooked over the fire, and then mixed with pickled garlic, olive oil, tomatoes, peppers and chorizo in a big platter. I’d eat this overlooking the Mediterranean, at one of the look-out points built on the 18th-century World Heritage Site Serra de Tramuntana.”

11am: “Back in Somerset, I’d go for a walk with my dear friends Ben Goldsmith and Jemima Jones, on their land that they are reforesting. Ben is a passionate environmentalist and walks with him are full of interesting nuggets about the native species, sustainable farming techniques, how to rear pigs – he's all about living the good life, and giving back to the land as you enjoy it."

1pm: “Time for a power lunch with my partners at Paddle8 and perhaps some of our indelibly inspiring investors at The Four Seasons Restaurant in New York, that Mies Van der Roer designed, going strong since 1959. To me, it is the most elegant, minimalist dining room in the world. It always has an interesting cast of characters from the upper echelons of the ever-evolving New York city! Mark Rothko was commissioned to do some paintings for the

31

Page 32: MINE Magazine London

space – where he secretly decided to create 'something that will ruin the appetite of every son of a bitch that eats in that room.' They were meant to be in a dedicated room, however, at the last minute he decided to pull out of the commission and keep them for himself, despite the potentially lucrative deal."

3pm: “To contrast the former – I would then head for a tranquil period of contemplation starting with some meditation at the Rothko Chapel in Houston, followed by a wander around The de Menil Collection designed by Renzo Piano; it's my favourite museum in the world. I’d want to wander the treasure rooms upstairs that hold a range of objects collected by John and Dominique de Menil. They are all evocative of using art as a way of connecting to the mystery, the higher power, our humanity. It’s a spiritual collection."

5pm: “After a clear-headed spiritual and intellectual time of quiet reflection,

I’d want to see some friends and have a laugh – and what better way to do it than in Seville, wandering around the cobbled streets from the Rinconcillo to the Casa Morales, sharing manzanilla and jamon.”

7pm: “Come sunset, you’ll find me on the beach in Cuixmala, Mexico. They have the most precious little cove, with white sand, perfectly placed hammocks and palm trees that look out to a little island in the distance as pelicans swoop overhead. Hopefully there will be a friend DJing on owner Goffredo’s killer sound system for a dance to celebrate another day lived.”

10pm: “After a rambling walk through the pleasantly disorienting streets of Venice, I’d end up at Da Ivo [above] for dinner, where I’d sup on courgette flowers, risotto, fresh calamari, steak fiorentina and some lovely red wine.”

11:30pm: “The night would end perfectly seeing Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil playing a concert under the stars in Salvador. They are the founders of tropicalismo, a movement started in the late '60s in protest of the military government and inspired psychedelic rock, as well as artists such as David Byrne and Devendra Banhart. They both have the sweetest voices, that always spark so much love, longing and freedom."

knows how to light up a room (quite literally)

ydney-based Steve Cordony’s talent and expertise have seen him create stunning events and interiors for both personal and corporate clients – and it’s a roster that reads like an haute couture who’s who. Add to that his editorial and advertorial projects – for names including Belle magazine, Myer emporium and Coco Republic – as well as a strong social media following (he was recently featured as one of the top 10 Australian interior Instagramers… well, who doesn’t love interiors porn?), and you have one mightily impressive portfolio. Want to add some je ne sais Steve to your summer interiors? Of course you do.

Check out of London life for a few days (OK, make it a week), and check into one of these luxe escapes. By Thea Darricote

Sun-drenched Beverly Hills, with its wide palm tree-lined roads and abundance

of bougainvillea, is a hot spot all year round but April through to September

is the ideal time to go. If you do go, there’s really only one place to stay: The

Beverly Hills Hotel. Known affectionately as the Pink Palace by locals, it is the

Grande Dame of the area having been built before the city itself, which subsequently

evolved around it. Actors and directors flocked to it, making it the only place to be

seen – it’s where Faye Dunaway learnt the Australian crawl, Elizabeth Taylor preferred

to honeymoon (six of her eight honeymoons were spent here) and Vivien Leigh met

the agent who cast her in Gone With The Wind. The hotel is imbued with the magic of

Hollywood, from the corridors lined with banana leaf wallpaper to the Polo Lounge,

where many movie contracts have been signed over a McCarthy salad. Oscar winners

have kicked off their heels and toasted their success with ice-cold champagne, while the

pool bustled with aspiring actresses, movie moguls and vacationers all vying for the best

spot in the sun and the pool-boys' attention (the frozen coffee will kick start your day,

while the Margarita will round it off nicely). There’s only one thing you need to

remember if you’re staying there; everybody who is anybody orders off menu!

Zen out at W HÔTEL VERBIER, SWITZERLANDPrince Harry & Co adore Verbier and while the paps are a nightmare in the

winter season, spring and summer sees a heavenly increase in temperature and

decrease in unwanted media intrusion. Spring introduces meadows rampant

with alpine flowers, bemused cows with oversized bells around their necks, and

brilliant blue skies hemmed in by majestic mountains capped with snow. The W

Hôtel Verbier is the most exciting new addition to the scene and summer offers

yoga, paragliding, hiking and an abundance of alpine activities that will keep

whole families entertained. In the evening, retreat to the hotel for a pampering

treatment in the 800m2 AWAY Spa, and once the stresses of mountain life have

been scrubbed and pummeled away, float up to the bar with its impressive views

over the valley for a well-deserved glass of Dôle Blanche.

Get high on (rural) life at CHEWTON GLEN, HAMPSHIREIf city life is taking its toll, why not retreat to the countryside and fulfill

childhood dreams of living in a tree house? Except these are not any tree

houses, the Treehouses at Chewton Glen are so jaw-droppingly gorgeous

that even Peter Pan would grow up and get a job so that he could afford

to stay here. Perched high in the trees they have been designed to blend

in perfectly with their surroundings. Accessed rather appropriately by a

plank, the interiors are a peaceful palette of neutral, warm colours while

panoramic windows give forest views, flooding the suites with daylight.

Sip champagne and watch the sunset from your hot tub on the balcony

with a clear conscience; not a tree was felled during the construction of

these branch-dwelling beauties – they have been designed to create the

minimum carbon footprint in every conceivable way. To top it all off, a

daily breakfast hamper is delivered to your suite each morning to further

convince you that there really is nothing wanting from your life.

Be seen at SOHO FARMHOUSE, COTSWOLDSSoho House certainly know how to do things well, so

expectations are high for the imminent opening of Soho

Farmhouse (due to open its doors in early July). One

hundred acres of sprawling farm land has been carefully

evolved into the destination for cool families, as well as

loved-up couples in search of a rural retreat. You have

the choice of 40 cabins, a seven-bedroom farmhouse or

a four-bedroom cottage. Then there’s the Boathouse with

indoor and outdoor pools, the main barn for eating and

drinking, Cowshed spa for pampering, Josh Wood salon

for finishing touches, and an abundance of activities.

Check out the five-a-side football pitch, tennis courts

and bicycles – there’s even a zip wire to ensure the little

ones are happily unconscious in time for a romantic

meal à deux, or maybe even a movie in the Electric

Barn cinema. However, make sure you get a reservation

quickly, as it will be the place to be seen this summer!

Don your wellies at PARK HOTEL KENMARE, IRELANDIt’s hard not to fall in love with Ireland, thanks to

the mists that roll in from the sea and creep over the

moorland, the constantly scampering clouds causing

intermittent bursts of sunlight and, of course, the

glorious hospitality and partiality to a good drink.

Should you be planning a trip, make sure you go to the

Park Hotel Kenmare, which is an impressive creation

in grey stone dating from 1897 with 46 bedrooms,

an insanely fabulous spa, and irresistible charm. Be

prepared: there is a prevalence of ‘Johns’ working at

the hotel, which can be the cause of some confusion

but is also rather useful if you’re not good with names!

Wellies are advised irrespective of the season because

you’ll almost certainly end up on the moors. Creaky

floorboards add atmosphere while the bar is timeless,

welcoming and boasts an impressive collection of

whiskey; curated by John (naturally).

CORINTHIA HOTEL, LONDONIt is surprisingly tricky to find an al fresco bar in London and with this summer set to be a hot

one it's also rather frustrating. Thankfully, the iconic Corinthia Hotel has come to the rescue

by launching its fabulous new Garden Lounge. The name itself conjures a Babylonian vision of

flourishing greenery, although David Collins Studio has moved it firmly (and with inimitable

finesse) into the 21st century. Imagine columns and plinths adorned by handcrafted mosaics;

each mosaic comprises of a palette of gold, cream, red, terracotta and grey perfectly formed by

French artist Mathilde Jonquière and complemented by muted stone fireplaces at either end (in

case the evenings turn chilly). There are elegant circular tables for breakfast, lunch, snacks or

suppers where the chic set gather to enjoy perfectly chilled champagne. There are comfortable

seats for lounging in late at night while cradling a tumbler of one of

the 62 varieties of whiskey – perhaps enjoying one of the cigars from

the well-stocked Humidor (if you can’t decide which one will fit the

occasion, simply ask the wonderful cigar sommelier, Paola Paolillo.)

And there is greenery: boxes of it, vases of it, glass jars of it tumbling,

entwining, creeping over marble bar tops, on tables and all around you.

It is quite simply an urban oasis and that’s something to be relished in

the heart of London.

“The theme for Chelsea in Bloom this

year is fairy-tales. Mrs B [Caroline’s mother Joan Burstein]

is affectionately known as the fairy godmother of the fashion

industry because everything she chooses is always beautiful.

This year we thought we could tie the theme of fairy-tales to

Cinderella and transform ordinary into extraordinary.”

“The last display we did with By Appointment Only Design was

the Browns Bride Christmas window, and I think it bought us

more social media activity than ever before. But I think the most

show-stopping window in the history of Browns was the 2013

Chelsea in Bloom display. Literally, it stopped traffic and a lot of

famous faces who live in the area popped in to congratulate us on

the wonderful display.”

Creative director of Browns, Caroline Burstein, was born

into a fashion family. Her parents founded

Browns in the early ’70s and soon after Caroline launched

Molton Brown. She went on to join Browns in 1993

and is now creative director for the brand. Caroline’s

relationship with By Appointment Only Design began in 2010, and since

then they have collaborated on numerous show-stopping Chelsea In Bloom window

displays, including this year’s, which won silver

from the Chelsea In Bloom judges…

“I am very happy to hand over the window displays to Tony

and Javier from By Appointment Only Design. From the first

moment I met them I could see that their talent is not only

tremendous, but the creations they make are always inspiring

and uplifting.”

“We started this year’s display over a year ago to give Javier

and Tony as much time as possible because it is a very large

and important installation. We had many discussions and

mood boards before settling on this perfect masterpiece.”

Culinary genius JONATHAN ATTWOOD of Last Supper catering knows how to give good party

U R P R I S I N G LY, Jonathan Attwood – who heads up caterers to the couture set and the A-list alike, Last Supper – always wanted to be an actor. But he turned down the

opportunity to present a TV show in 2003, in order to set up his now über-successful company. (Last Supper counts Gucci, Ralph Lauren and Armani as clients.) Jonathan's been working in and around the party business for 22 years now: “I love having to consider the style of an event, in keeping with its surroundings. We’re currently working on a five-day wedding on a Scottish island, which will include picnics on the beach and afternoon teas in underground grottos.” His favourite venue is Aynhoe Park, for its sheer eccentricity, or the cool WC in Clapham (a converted public loo). But Jonathan’s perfect evening is entertaining at home. “My house is known among friends as the soup kitchen. In the summer we’ll have drinks in the garden, which is part of an old fruit orchard, and so it feels like being in the country, even though I live in town.”

Each season Last Supper creates a guide for menus but most of what they do is focused on the client. We ask Jonathan what he thinks is hot right now: “Ramen Bars are on trend – try Bone Daddies in Soho. And small plate dining is still very relevant. My favourite spot for dinner is Barrafina, though – I’ve never had a single thing there that I didn’t adore or want to eat again (immediately!).”

Serve a cocktail with a kick and pre mix it

lemon, maraschino and violet. I know it sounds terribly floral but it’s an

utterly delicious classic from the 1920s and perfect for

summer

Serve something that suits your budget. It’s better to do one thing

in abundance than several things in a

diluted way

Unless you’re a wiz in the kitchen avoid

complicated techniques and last-minute flourishes that add pressure and take you

away from your guests. Everyone hates a

stressed host

A one-pot dish is

an easy way to help you prepare things

in advance

Summer’s here, so an all-cold

menu is a great idea. Try some torn burrata and a colourful array of

heritage tomatoes

If you can employ a few eager

helpers – do so. It allows you to enjoy the party and most

things should be cleared away when you’re feeling

a little papery eyed the morning after

Canapés are great when you have a

team of professional chefs to prepare them, but are too fiddly

for home. As an alternative, allow guests to chisel on a block of Parmesan and dunk it into

some truffle honey

For an

improvised pudding, place a giant bar of Amedei Gianduja chocolate on a board for guests to cut chunks. Add biscotti and

whatever berries are in season, and stir your favourite liquor through

some mascarpone. Guests can then assemble their own

sundaes

If guests are bringing a bottle, how

will you chill their drinks? Fridges will take too long and

are often not big enough to cope. Always prepare a bottle skip (or your bath!) with plenty

of ice

hat is it that makes a candle distinctive? That makes it stand out, that makes it linger in your memory? For some, it’s the moments that smelling a fragrance conjures: figs, overripe and heavily perfumed, that remind you of lazy summer breakfasts; neroli, delicate and

powdery, that recalls crisp cotton sheets. For others, it’s about the packaging: about a design that blends seamlessly into its surroundings; a design that is at once modern yet timeless.

It’s fair to say that few people spend as much time thinking about scent as Jo Malone. And her latest project, three years in the making, is testament to this. She calls it the Shot Candle Collection, £75 each. It's a candle that blends two fragrances in its elegant white glass tumbler – a scented wax ‘base’ coupled with an additional ‘shot’ of scented wax – to produce something even more evocative, more personal than before possible.

This collaborative process has taken over the back room of her boutique on Elizabeth Street (a former florist where Malone once worked as a girl): customers can perch at a table, laden with tiny bottles and blotters, and assume the role of perfumer as they create their own candle from a library of scents. There are seven to choose between – from the smoky charcoal lemons to the sharp, sugary mint mojito. Candle assembled, its label is handwritten, customers are encouraged to paint, in scent, the accompanying card with its reminder of the notes involved. It’s just another way in that Malone wants you to be fully immersed in the process. And the result? A candle, distinct yet familiar, with the unique ability to take you somewhere quite unexpected.
