Change PointsIn the catalogue you will see changes between the use of two par ts referred to bydates. We have steered away from the traditional industry standard of listing changepoints by chassis or commission number (they’re different, and the factory parts booksused both) because frankly they are so complicated on Minis . Austins, Morrises, Coopersand Cooper S, Clubmans, 1275 GTs, Travellers, Countrymans, Vans and Pick Ups - they allhad different change points until 1984 (after which it got much more straight forward)and to list change point numbers would often amount to half a page of numbers!
As a result, we’ve used years instead. While much more simple, we acknowledge thatusing dates to portray change points is not perfect. For example , you probably knowthe year of registration of your car but you might not know the all important year ofmanufacture - the two aren’t necessarily the same , of course . Also, a revised par t wasoften introduced during a year rather than more conveniently at the beginning or endof it. If you have difficulty in establishing which of two parts is right for your car, youwill find a list of Mini models production history at the end of this catalogue whichmay help. If it doesn’t, (you guessed it) contact us, preferably with your chassis,commission or engine number to hand, and we’ll do our best to sor t it out for you.
Mini ElectricsThe subject matter of this publication, the Somerford Mini Electrical Catalogue, is theone area of the Mini that changed almost beyond recognition during the 41 years ofproduction. It’s difficult to think of one item that remained recognisably the samethroughout that period: lights, switches, instrumentation, starter motor and chargingsystem - even the wiring harness construction changed completely. The last four yearsof Minis didn’t even have a distributor at all under the bonnet, let alone one that mightlook similar to that on a 1959 car; and then of course there’s the electronicmanagement systems. No wonder this Electrical Catalogue is by some way the biggestin the Somerford Mini catalogue range!
The one Mini electrical factor which was consistently there throughout the car’sproduction life was the component manufacturer Lucas. In early days, just abouteverything electrical on the Mini was manufactured by Lucas (the bits that weren’t byand large came from Smiths). By the late 1990s Lucas components , or componentsmade by former Lucas divisions, still made up the lion’s share of Mini electricalequipment. Not a bad record at all for a company once nicknamed by disgr untledAmerican customers ‘Joseph Lucas, Prince of Darkness’.
While we all grumble from time to time about par ts we can’t get any more for ourbeloved little car, it’s worth taking a moment to note just how much of that 41 yearspread of electrical componentry Lucas, or Lucas tooling, is still making for us - thereason it’s still possible today to buy a brand new dynamo, last fitted on a new Miniin the early 1970s, is because Lucas still make them. Long live Lucas!

Inertia Starter MotorsInertia type starter motors were fitted to Minis up until 1985. An iner tia starter fitted car can beidentified by the starter solenoid being elsewhere in the engine bay, connected to the motor by a heavyduty cable.
There are four types of inertia star ter motor, all originally manufactured by Lucas. While they appearquite different in construction, they are in fact interchangeable . If you intend to repair your startermotor, take care to correctly identify which of the types it is before ordering parts - it will have ‘M35H’,‘M35G’, ‘M35J’ or ‘M35K’ stamped on the casing. There should also be on the casing a 5-digit Lucas partnumber, which will also assist in ordering some parts.
Reconditioned Starter MotorGenuine reconditioned starter motors have more recently been manufactured to a specification closelyresembling the M35J type, irrespective of the type of old unit used in the reconditioning process . Thismeans that they all now use the later design axial brushes (GSB105) and a ‘face-contacting’ commutator.Non-genuine reconditioned units may still be built up as either M35H, M35G, M35J or M35K units,depending on spares availability for the designs.

A pre-engaged starter motor maybe identified by its integral solenoid, a large round cylinder riding piggy-back style on the top of themotor. DynamoA Lucas manufactured type C40 dynamo was fitted to the majority of Minis up until the mid-1970s. Thedynamo casing was stamped with a 5 digit Lucas part number: 22700, 22742 and 22775 are originalMini equipment.
When fitting a dynamo that is new to the car, it must be polarised to match the earth system (positiveor negative ear th). This may be done as follows:Fit the dynamo to the engine, without connecting it to the car’s electrics. Then hold a length of wirebetween the battery cable terminal on the starter solenoid and the smaller of the tw o terminals (the‘field’ terminal) on the back of the dynamo for three to five seconds, to polarise the dynamo. Removethe length of wire and connect the dynamo to the car’s electrical system.

Replacing an external regulator AC alternator with a more serviceable and more powerful internalregulator ACR type is an option, but you should be confident of your electrical abilities if you intend tomake the conversion. 16ACR and 17ACR Alternator (Internal Regulator) 1969-80Several different alternators were fitted in this period, of varying power rating (16 or 17ACR) and usingtwo methods of sensing. Initially batter y-sensed alternators were fitted; at unspecified times the designschanged to machine-sensed. The situation today as regards replacement alternators is that all ACR types(as far as Mini is concerned) supersede to a single, 17ACR, machine-sensed unit.
If you have an early 1970s Mini and you suspect the alternator hasn’t been changed in the last 15years or so, then you may well still have a battery-sensed alternator fitted. Adjusting the Fan BeltHowever tempting it may be, do not use a jack handle to lever out the dynamo/alternator on itsmountings to tension a loose, squealing fan belt! Over-tensioning the fan belt will lead to damaging thebearings on the dynamo/alternator, damaging the water pump bearing (sometimes both to gether), orbreaking one of the mounting brackets - resulting in a frustrating hunt for a new bracket if yours is oneof the earlier or rarer types.
A fan belt should be capable of being tensioned by hand, only maybe using a pry such as a longhandled screwdriver to hold the dynamo or alternator with the fan belt in tension while the mountingnuts and bolts are tightened. If you can’t tension the fan belt by hand, it is either worn or stretched, oryou don’t have the correct one for your car.
If you are in any doubt about fan belt condition, replace it with a new one - given the expensivedamage that may be caused by a worn or brok en fan belt, it would be cheaper in the long run.
Checking a Dynamo Circuit for FaultsIf you know you have a charging problem but you’re not sure what’s causing it, first check the fan belttension and battery condition - many dynamos have been needlessly replaced over the years because theformer isn’t driving the dynamo correctly or the latter is in such poor condition that it is no longer fullycapable of completing the charging circuit.
Next, using a multimeter check the wiring and the condition of the wiring connectors - you should checkthe brown and yellow wire running between the large spade connector on the dynamo and the Dterminal on the control box, and the brown and green wire running between the small spade connectoron the dynamo and the F terminal on the control box. Again, faults actually caused by poor wiring orterminal connections have caused the unnecessar y replacement of dynamos in the past.
Having made sure all electrical equipment in the car is tur ned off, disconnect the wires from the back ofthe dynamo and tape up their connectors to prevent a short circuit. Then connect a length of wirebetween the two terminals on the dynamo. Star t the engine and allow to idle. Connect a 0-20V movingcoil voltmeter to a good earth on the engine and to one of the dynamo terminals (be sure to connectthe voltmeter the right way round with reference to the car’s polarity).
Gently increasing the engine speed, check the voltmeter reading rises smoothly. If the highest reading isstill low (from 0-5V approx.), the dynamo is at fault. Don’t race the engine in the hope of getting a fewmore volts on the meter! If the reading is stuck at zero, it may be the dynamo just needs new br ushes.
If all the checks and tests so far have had good results, then the control box is the faulty component inyour charging circuit.
DistributorsMini distributors fall into a number of distinctly different designs. Up until 1973 the Lucas 25D unitwas used, except on Cooper S models which used a version without vacuum ad vance called the 23Dtype. From 1974 until 1980 the Lucas 45D type was used, with a few cars, lik e the Mini Special,receiving Ducellier units instead. From the introduction of the revised A+ series engine in 1980, theLucas 45D and Ducellier distributors were fitted as alternatives on 850 and 1100 engines, withrespectively similar Lucas 59D or Ducellier units being fitted to 1000 engines.
With the reintroduction of the 1275 engine in the Cooper in 1990, a new modular electronic distributorappeared, the 64D unit, while the 1000 engined Minis carried on with the non-electronic 59D until thatengine size was dropped in 1992.
The distributor manufacturer and type are stamped or cast into the casing - positively identifying yourdistributor before ordering parts is vital because of the different types used over the years, plus the factthat many cars have received distributor swaps during their lifetimes.
A few things to note when servicing or repairing distributors:
Before fitting a new rotor arm during an ignition service on a Lucas distributor, don’t forget to put adrop of oil on the felt pad inside the top of the cam spindle - it will help reduce wear of the spindleand its bush.
If after setting the points gap you find the points are still wildly out of adjustment, there are threeprobable causes:(i) the points slipped as you tightened the screw, or you didn’t tighten the screw enough (tr y setting
the points again).(ii) the distributor spindle bush is worn, allowing the spindle and points operating cam to rotate out of
true (replacing the bush helps considerably, even if the spindle shows some sign of wear as well).(iii) the distributor spindle is distorted or bent - this problem is more common than you’d think,
especially if the engine to which the distributor is attached has suffered a bit of rough handling atsome point in its life. The best remedy here would be a new or reconditioned distributor.
Advance systems on distributors are often ignored or assumed to be in good health when in fact quitethe reverse may be tr ue. All distributors on Minis use a centrifugal advance mechanism; as the enginegets faster, so the timing advances (by way of the spinning weights on the spindle - the amount ofadvance is checked by the advance springs) to maintain performance and economy. It therefore followsthat correct operation of the advance mechanism is critical to the operation of the engine.Undiagnosed siezed advance weights or tired springs can cause endless frustration when trying to sor tout poor engine running.
Similarly, the vacuum ad vance unit found on the majority of Mini distributors is often overlook ed whenlooking for reasons for poor running - a failed vacuum advance unit will seriously affect cruising speedeconomy.
Lucas Type 25D and 23D Distributors1959-73 (All Models)Many, many variants of this distributor design were fitted to the Mini, each calibrated for use with apar ticular engine and/or fuel grade. Units with vacuum advance, known as 25D, were used on mostmodels, but the Cooper S used a distributor without vacuum advance known as the 23D. If you requirea new distributor, we can offer two options.
You can purchase one of the two units below and use the spring set listed under ‘Repair and OverhaulParts’ to set it up correctly for your car. Alternatively, an Aldon distributor (see later in this section)will give you original appearance with a much improved, more efficient, ad vance curve.

Lucas Type 45D and 59D Distributors1974-92 (1000 Engined Models Only After 1984)Once again, several pages-worth of 45D and 59D distributors could be listed here for Mini applications!This would be neither customer-friendly nor representative of what distributors are available, or likely tobecome available in future. The truth is that ver y few 45D and 59D distributors are being manufacturedor are available new.
We can only offer the very basic range shown below, each of which may require calibration with springsand weights etc . to make them suitable for your car (unless you own a post-1980 A+ engined Mini1000, in which case the two distributors listed are already correctly set up).
A Series and A+ distributors are not interchangeable; the drive dog on the bottom of the distributor andthe its corresponding distributor drive in the engine changed upon the introduction of A+.

Ducellier Distributors1977-92 (1000 Engined Models Only After 1981)Not the favourite distributor of the Mini enthusiast, the Ducellier unit still played an important role inthe Mini’s history, being fitted as an alternative-supply item in place of the equivalent Lucas 45D and59D units for some 14 years. That said, if you are uncomfortable about retaining your Ducellierdistributor, it can be directly replaced by a Lucas 45D or 59D unit.
A Series and A+ distributors are not interchangeable; the drive do g on the bottom of the distributorand the its corresponding distributor drive in the engine changed upon the introduction of A+.

Type 64D Distributors1990-94, 1275 Engined Models OnlyThe 64D distributor is the electronic successor to the mechanical Lucas Type 59D and Type 45Ddistributor family. In the Mini, it first saw light of day in the limited edition Cooper from Rover SpecialProducts in 1990. The 64D was only ever fitted to 1275 engines and came in two states of tune -high performance (Cooper) and standard performance (Sprite and Mayfair).
While the standard performance 1275 carburetter engine destined for the Sprite and Mayfair officiallyarrived in 1992, a year after the Cooper had gone over to fuel injection, some carburetter Coopersdestined for export markets did leave the factory with standard performance engines with distributorstuned to suit.

Ignition CoilsWhile single point injection models up to 1996 featured a traditional ignition system (i.e. distributorand oil-filled coil), the multi point injection set up fitted from 1997 onwards required direct electronicignition. The new quad dr y coil created twin sparks, dispensing with the need to switch ignition hightension voltage between each cylinder and therefore making the distributor redundant.
The single point injection models that continued to be built for Japan from 1997 on also received directelectronic ignition.

Vacuum PipesIf your fuel injection engine is running roughly, using way too much fuel or even barely r unning at all,before you throw the car at someone with a degree in electronic engineering to sort out, it would be agood idea to spend a couple of minutes checking the vacuum pipes under the bonnet.
Faulty vacuum advance pipes on carburetter-fitted Minis create enough trouble - on injection cars theycause mayhem! Most vacuum pipe problems are caused by the perishing or splitting of the connectorsat either end, creating air leaks into the inlet manifold and sending entirely the wrong information tothe engine management system. For the sake of a few pence-worth of connector and a moment or twoto fit it, you could magic a star tling recovery of health from your engine!
If you’ve checked the vacuum pipes and found them to be serviceable, try inspecting the hose runningbetween the inlet manifold and the brake servo and its connections - it’s another prime candidate for airleaks into the induction system.

Electronic Control SystemsSingle Point Injection (SPi) 1991-96, Japan 1991 On.For once, we’ve broken with our convention here to show change points between the electroniccomponents by vehicle identification number (VIN), rather than by year. This is of course because it isvitally important that you match compatible electronic components with each other, and the only sure-fire way of determining what’s fitted to your car is b y the VIN . This number may be found on the VINplate attached to the RH inner wing under the bonnet, plus on later cars it may also be found on asmall plate in the LH corner of the the windscreen.
In 1991 the Cooper 1275cc engine lost its carburetter in favour of fuel injection, primarily to complywith emissions regulations. The injection system used was a fair ly simple affair, employing a singleinjector housed in a throttle body on the inlet manifold. Known within the factory confines as ThrottleBody Injection (TBi), it is alwa ys referred to as Single Point Injection (SPi) in this catalogue, because thatis the name universally used by the marketplace.
The Rover Mini Cabriolet introduced in 1993 also used the Cooper SPi engine, and from 1994 the otherMinis in the line up (Sprite, Mayfair, plus the many limited editions based on them) also went over tosingle point injection, set up to a slightly lower state of tune than that used for the Cooper andCabriolet.
Single point injection ceased to be fitted for most countries after 1996, or (VIN) 134454, being replacedby a twin injector system known by all as Multi Point Injection (MPi). However Japan continued with SPiuntil exports to that market finished in 1999. As you may notice from the coils section above, the 1997on Japan spec SPi was rather different from the 1991-96 SPi set-up - the most visual difference being

the deletion of the distributor and fitment of the quad coil more usually associated with the European1997 on MPi models.
Note that in a few expor t markets the Cooper was sold with the lower performance Sprite/Mayfairengine, using that engine’s control unit. Which countries this concerned is particularly poorlydocumented, so fur ther research may be required before ordering. A little ray of hope is that someECUs were marked with the state of tune: ‘Standard Performance’ means Sprite/Mayfair, whereas ‘HighPerformance’ means Cooper.

really introduced as part of the European specification MPi programme - the distributorless ignition beinga case in point. Multi-Point Injection (MPi) 1997 On (Not Japan)For the 1997 model year, single point injection was dropped for all markets except Japan in favour of atwo injector system - one injector for each inlet port in the engine’s cylinder head. This system isknown by one and all as Multi Point Injection (MPi). Naturally the electronic control system for theengine changed to suit, an updated version of Rover’s MEMS management system, MEMS 2J, being used.
There were no MPi automatic transmission models (though automatic SPi models continued to be builtfor Japan, and in fact made up the vast majority of Japan-bound cars) and only one level of performancewas available; as a result, browsing through the electronic control units is rather easier than SPi. There’sonly one change point, and as was the case with SPi it’s more accurate and easier to identify using theVIN numbers rather than years.
As with the previous single point injection section, here we are showing change points between theelectronic components by vehicle identification number (VIN), rather than by year. It is vitally importantthat you match compatible electronic components with each other, and the only sure-fire way ofdetermining what’s fitted to your car is by the VIN. This number may be found on the VIN plateattached to the RH inner wing under the bonnet or on a small plate in the LH corner of the thewindscreen.

Headlamp AssembliesIt would not be practical to list all the headlamps used in 41 years of Mini production - many ofcourse are no longer available anyway. What we have done here is to show a reasonable range ofheadlamps covering most cars in most countries. Some countries do however require different lenses,bulb colour or headlamp power and our advice for those seeking assemblies not sho wn here is topurchase the lens, bulb or unit locally in your own country if possible.

SpeedometersThese speedometers are calibrated for use on the models shown, so long as original wheel and tyredimensions are also used and the original ratio final drive (differential) is fitted. Any variation fromstandard wheel dimensions or final drive ratio will probably - unless you are very careful - change theoverall gearing of the car and will result in the speedometer requiring recalibration.
We can offer if necessary, for those customers with a non-standard car, a bespoke speedometerrecalibration service. For this, we would obviously require from you as much information as possible inorder to get the calibration correct for your particular set-up. Information needed includes the rollingradius of your wheel/tyre combination, final drive ratio and the number of teeth on the speedometerpinion, if any of these differ from standard for your year and model of car. Please contact us todiscuss details.
Some speedometers are available as outright new purchases. Others are not and in these instances areconditioned unit may be offered, in exchange for your old speedometer assembly. This process isdependent on your old speedometer being in a reconditionable state; if it isn’t, or you have no oldspeedometer to exchange, a surcharge will be levied. Remember to remove your voltage stabilizer fromthe back of the old speedometer before exchanging it! To identify your old speedometer before ordering a replacement, you will find an ‘SN’ number in smallprint on the face of the instrument. This is the original Smiths Instruments par t number and is theeasiest and most accurate way of establishing and ordering your replacement. For academic referenceor for those who recognise speedometers by BMC/BL/Rover part numbers, we have also included thethese numbers in brackets in the ‘Remarks’ column.
By the way, the ‘TPM’ figure also displayed in small print on the face of the speedometer refers to thenumber of turns per mile it is calibrated for. Those of you with a mathematical inclination will be ableto use this figure to work out whether your speedometer is correct for your tyre/final drive/speedopinion combination; for the rest of us, it’s just nice to know that another speedometer with the sameTPM figure will work just as effectively in the same car.

It therefore makes sense, when fitting a new speedometer cable, togive it a bit of care and attention to afford it the best possible chance of a long and fault-free life.A very sparing wipe of light grease on the inner cable before fitting (don’t o ver-grease it) and ensuringthat no bends in the cable are under 6” radius approximately will help prevent premature wear betweenthe inner and outer cable, inner cable distor tion or failure and speedometer needle ‘snatch’.
After all, getting your hand down the back of the engine to undo and replace a speedometer cable isneither easy nor comfortable - anything that makes it a less frequent occurrence should be w elcomed!

Faulty Reading Fuel and Temperature GaugesFrom 1964 onwards, Minis were fitted with a device called a voltage stabilizer (you’ll find it screwed tothe back of the speedometer) which ‘ironed out’ voltage fluctuations to the fuel gauge and watertemperature gauge. Minis without a voltage stabilizer (pre-1964, approximately, depending on model) canbe easily recognised when turning on the ignition - the fuel gauge will instantly give its reading, insteadof the needle gliding slowly and gently up to it. Effectively, a voltage stabilizer acts as a damper toremove wild fluctuations in gauge readings when, for example, your Mini is going up hill and do wn dale(fuel gauge) or the cooling system thermostat opens or closes (temperature gauge).
If the fuel gauge is giving a false reading, it may be the gauge that is at fault, the sender unit in thetank that is at fault, or one of the wiring connections in the circuit (actually, most commonly, anearthing connection). A quick trip around the car with a voltmeter should detect where the problem is.Similarly, if the temperature gauge is giving a false reading, the gauge or the temperature transmitter onthe engine may be at fault, or once again the wiring connections between the two.
HOWEVER, if you have a 1964 onwards car and BOTH the fuel gauge and temperature gauge aremalfunctioning, the primary suspect has to be the voltage stabilizer, or the connections to it.
Offset Instruments, 1969-89The parts listed in this section are for the instrument packs manufactured by Smiths and latterly Lucas,from 1969-89. From late 1989 onwards, Minis used instruments which, while appearing at first glanceto be a continuation of the Smiths design, were in many ways quite different in construction andoperation. These later instruments, manufactured by Nippon Seiki, are detailed in the next section.
SpeedometersThese speedometers are calibrated for use on the models shown, so long as original wheel and tyredimensions are also used and the original ratio final drive (differential) is fitted. Any variation fromstandard wheel dimensions or final drive ratio will probably - unless you are very careful - change theoverall gearing of the car and will result in the speedometer requiring recalibration.
Some speedometers are available as outright new purchases. Others are not and in these instances areconditioned unit may be offered, in exchange for your old speedometer assembly. This process isdependent on your old speedometer being in a reconditionable state; if it isn’t, or you have no oldspeedometer to exchange, a surcharge will be levied. Please see our price list or contact us to find outwhether your speedometer is available new or as a reconditioned exchange item.
To identify your old speedometer before ordering a replacement, you will find an ‘SN’ number in smallprint on the face of the instrument. This is the original Smiths Instruments par t number, and it can becross-referenced to the BMC/BL/Rover part number sho wn below.
By the way, the ‘TPM’ figure also displayed in small print on the face indicates the number of turns permile the speedometer is calibrated for. Two different speedometers with the same TPM figure will workjust as effectively on the same car.

SpeedometersThese speedometers are calibrated for use on the models shown, so long as original wheel and tyredimensions are also used and the original ratio final drive (differential) is fitted. Any variation fromstandard wheel dimensions or final drive ratio will probably - unless you are very careful - change theoverall gearing of the car and will result in the speedometer requiring recalibration.
Some speedometers are available as outright new purchases. Others are not and in these instances areconditioned unit may be offered, in exchange for your old speedometer assembly. Fascia Switches and Warning Lamps1959-69Toggle Switches (Rocker Switches for Selected Export Markets)The familiar toggle switches were fitted to most Mk I and Mk II Minis built between 1959 and 1969, theexceptions being those cars bound mainly for Germany and Sweden (i.e. cars subject to more stringentsafety regulations, and those with two speed windscreen wipers) which had instead very early designs ofrocker switches. Switches with long (easy reach) toggles are not original to any Mini (apar t from somefactory competition cars), and were a period aftermark et accessory.
The early rocker switches are now very difficult to come by, so the rocker switches listed here arenecessarily of the later 1969-70 type. These may require a very small amount of modification to fit,depending on the switch panel design in the car.
A toggle switch is secured by a threaded chrome ring, which can be difficult to tighten (using a smallscrewdriver in one of the two slots on the ring or a pair of pliers usually damages the ring or theswitch, or scratches the paint on the switch panel). For a few minutes work and a few pence you canbe the envy of your Mini (or MG, or any other car with Lucas toggle switches) owning friends by havingthe correct tool for the job:
Obtain a 4-6” length of steel tube (copper is too soft), with an internal diameter between 9/16” and5/8” and an external diameter greater than (but not too much more than) 3/4”. You should be able tobeg this from a scrap metal merchant or a steel fabricator on the local industrial estate, rather thanhaving to purchase a 2 metre length of tube from a steel stockist. Holding the tube vertically in a vice,simply file away enough material from one end to leave two diametrically opposite lugs which are bothwide enough and deep enough to engage securely in the slots on the switch ring. Easy!

1969-75Toggle Switches on Early Models;Rocker Switches (With Lucar Spade Terminals) on Later ModelsToggle switches continued to be fitted to most Mk III Minis (except for selected expor t markets whichused rocker switches) for the first year or so of production. The main change o ver from toggle torocker switches did not however occur at the same time as the change from dash ignition switch tosteering lock ignition switch - on the majority of Mini models it happened a year before steering lockscame in, although steering locks were fitted as options or standard equipment for some markets fromthe early 1960s onwards.
Hazard warning lights and switches began to be fitted during this period. They were fitted to severalexport mark et left hand drive Minis for many years before they were fitted across the board on allmodels in the late 1970s. Most of these earlier cars with hazard switches on the fascia were bound for
Germany, Sweden and Canada. As usual of course there is an exception to the rule, and it is possible tofind early 1970s right hand drive Minis with factory fitted hazard warning lights; if you have one, it isBAOR specification - its first owner would have been a soldier in the British Army of the Rhine, forwhom the car had to be basically UK spec. and RHD, but also complying with local German regulations .

heater, 1974-75.Vans and Pick Ups built until the start of the 1980s, along with some early 1960s saloons , wereequipped with a non-fresh air ‘recirculator y’ heater (if they had a heater at all - many ear ly ones didn’t),otherwise known as the fug stirrer due to its unfortunate habit of sucking in stale cabin air, warming itup and unpleasantly puffing it back out at the car’s occupants. The rate at which the occupants werebombarded with fug was at least adjustable by means of a rheostat fan switch, until some point(undocumented by the factor y) in the early 1970s when a simple push-pull on-off (no fug or full forcefug) switch was introduced.
The switches are completely interchangeable so long as the knobs are changed as well, and strangelyenough many later Vans and Pick Ups now seem to be fitted with rheostat switches... it makes therecirculatory heater somewhat less intolerable and is less drastic than replacing the entire heater with asaloon fresh air heater, which is the definitive answer to the problem. Having said all that, the rheostatswitch is unfortunately sometimes difficult to obtain now. Stick with it and find one!
Ignition and Starter SwitchesFascia Ignition and Floor Starter Switches, 1959-64(Not Super, Cooper or Cooper S)This is the ignition switch system employing the famous early Mini trade mark floor star ter button.Although it was used up until 1964, none of the upmarket Super, Cooper or Cooper S modelsmanufactured before that year were so fitted, these models being the first to receive the combinedignition and starter switch mounted on the fascia switch panel - the combined ignition and starterswitch is not the same as the ignition switch used on floor starter cars, and it is listed further do wnthis page.

Neutral Start Inhibitor SwitchThe very first automatic transmission Minis used a switch controlling both the starter inhibitor (so youcan’t star t the car in gear) and reversing lights. Since, however, most automatic Minis were of a morebasic specification and didn’t have reversing lights fitted (which were only an accessory at that timeanyway), the decision was soon taken to fit a less complicated, less expensive starter inhibitor only switch.A separate reversing light switch was then added elsewhere on the gearchange if required.
The early dual purpose switch may be simply replaced by the later inhibitor switch on 1964-65 carswithout reversing lamps (i.e. most cars of that period). However, if you have a 1964-65 automatic withreversing lamps, the later switch can only be used if you also replace the die-cast control housing underthe gear lever with the later 1966 onwards type and fit the separate GAE191 reversing light switch.

Headlamp Dim Dip SystemDim dip headlamps became a mandatory feature of new Minis and all other new cars intended for usein the United Kingdom after 1st April 1987. The dim dip system makes it impossible to drive the car onsidelights only - the sidelights henceforth only operated on their own with the ignition switched off,effectively becoming parking lights. It appears that very, very few mainland Europe bound cars were alsoequipped with dim dip, and not as a mandatory feature. Cars without dim dip used a ‘dumm y’ relay tocomplete the normal headlamp/sidelamp circuits. The dim dip system was dropped progressively fromnew cars in the mid-1990s, following relaxation of the regulations.
Dim dip headlamps dip in two ways. The low power, dim-dip headlamp (10% po wer for halogenlamps, 15% power for all other filaments) is intended for use in w ell-lit streets at night, or dulltwilight conditions, rather than using the full intensity dipped beam which may affect the vision ofother drivers. It is worked by using the lighting switch in the sidelight position with the ignitionswitched on. The full intensity dipped beam (and the main beam, of course) is therefore intended forout-of-town night driving.
If desired, it is perfectly possible - and legal - to modify a dim dip headlamp/sidelight circuit todayto work in the more conventional three stage sidelight, dipped headlamp and main beam headlampmanner, though many mourn the loss nowadays of the dim dip system which seemed on the face ofit to be a logical and safe way to go.

HornsYour Mini may have started life with any one of a great number of horns. Many combinations offeatures were used: metal-bodied, plastic, Lucas, Clear Hooters, Mixo, high or low note , with single or twinelectrical terminals - the majority are now not available. Some replacements have different featuresagain! Before ordering, you will need a good description of what you’ve already got to match it up asbest you can to the illustrations and descriptions here. Most importantly, check the quantity of wiringterminals you require. Incidentally, high or low note horns have ‘H’ or ‘L’ on the horn mouth.

Radio EquipmentRadios only started to become factory-fitted optional equipment on Minis during the 1970s , and onlybegan to be fitted as standard on such models as the Mayfair and certain limited editions during themid-1980s. From that point on, of course, the Mini began its transition from basic transport to glitzyfashion icon and a whole range of stereo radio cassettes gradually became available. Most of them are
now not available new, nor likely to be so in the future , so they are not listed here.
If you require a replacement radio for a mid to late 1990s Mini then the chances of us being able tohelp improve significantly; at time of writing (2005) the Phillips/Ro ver R660 radio (the one with thedetatchable key pad, fitted to most Minis in the last five or six years of production) is still a vailable, asis the optional CD player. HarnessesSome degree of rationalisation has of course taken place here - to make and stock all the originalpermutations of harness would not stack up as a sound business proposition! As a result, althoughmuch care and development has gone into this range, there will probably be occasions when you cometo connect your nice new harness and you’ve got a wire or two left over. Don’t worry, you may nothave made a mistake; it’s just that it’s sometimes not viable to make different harnesses for cars builtin the same period with only detail differences between them. Tucking unnecessar y wires away out ofsight is usually not a problem, but if you are at all worried, call us and one of our workshop staffwould be happ y to advise you.
Having said all that, w e can get a harness made in bespoke fashion for you if required, if you intend tomix and match different electrical equipment on your car. We would normally take payment beforehandfor this service , as a guarantee that we don’t get left with an odd product on our shelves. HarnessesAs with the harnesses section for 1959-88 saloons , some rationalisation has had to take place here -though not as much, since many harnesses for 1989 on models are still available (at time of writing...).A fair number are not normally stocked items, however, and would be bought in and supplied as specialorders. Please see the price list for details.
All harnesses listed in this section are assembled using the distinctive thin-walled cables used on Minisfrom 1989 onwards (the Mini never saw the use of ribbon harnesses introduced on most other carsfrom the late 1970s).
Harness assemblies for 1989 onwards Minis are supplied, as originally, as two or three main separatecomponents: the main harness (which includes under-bonnet and dash wiring), the body har ness(covering the interior and rear of the car), plus, for fuel injected models, an engine harness . Otherextension harnesses or cables are then added to these to accommodate optional or model-specificequipment.

HarnessesAlthough much care has gone into this range, there may be occasions when you come to connect yournew harness and you’ve got a wire or two left over. Don’t worry, you may not have made a mistake;it’s just that it’s sometimes not viable to make different harnesses for cars built in the same periodwith only detail differences between them. Tucking unnecessary wires away out of sight is usually not aproblem, but if you are worried, call us and one of our workshop staff w ould be happy to advise you.
That said, we can get a bespoke harness made for you, allowing fitment of different electrical equipment.We normally take payment at time of order, so we don’t get left with an odd product on our shelves.The harnesses listed here for models up to 1971 are designed for use on a car with a dynamo;harnesses for pre-1971 cars with the optional AC alternator are available; please contact us for details.All our harnesses are cloth or PVC bound (or both in a couple of instances), following faithfully theappearance of the original harness in your car.

This list is intended to assist some owners who are tr ying to establish year and model of their Mini.However, while the list may seem comprehensive, it isn’t. Just like everything else to do with the Miniwhen you look at its 40 y ear history, to come up with ever y last derivative, complete with correspondingchassis number (or vehicle identification number) prefix, would take several pages! However, limitededitions excepted, it details the Mini models covered by this catalogue and is a fair representation ofmodels down through the years.
