Sonic Mini Monocopter
Designed by:
Ritchie Kinmont
About this project:
The Sonic Mini Monocopter is the first in a series of flying monocopters made fromeasy to find materials. This project is designed to be thrown in the air by hand; then itgently returns to the ground as it auto-rotates like a maple seed. This project includesgraphics for five different monocopter designs appealing to boys and girls. Althoughfun for all ages, younger children may require help hand-launching their monocopters.
Throw this littlemonocopter in theair and watch itauto-rotate on itsway back to Earth. . . super cool!

Choose which one of the five monocopter designsyou would like to make from pages 11 through 15.
Print the graphic page full-scale on regular printerpaper. Use a sharp pair of scissors to roughly cutaround one of the three monocopter graphics on
the page. Then, carefully cut out the graphicexactly on the cut lines as shown. (fig. A)
Step 1
Make each successive fold exactly on the fold line, pinching the folds tightly as before. (fig. D)
Step 4
Use a metal ruler or straight edge to crease thegraphic on the first fold line as shown. Be sure tomake the crease exactly on the fold line. (fig. B)
Step 2
Turn the graphic over and make the first fold asshown. Be sure the fold is located exactly on the
fold line. Use your fingernails to pinch the folddown tightly all the way along. (fig. C)

Lay your monocopter wing on a clean worksurface with the printed side down. Cut a pieceof 1/2 wide clear tape the length of the foldedleading edge of the wing. Carefully apply thetape over the folded leading edge to secure it
down to the wing. (fig. F) Apply the tape withabout 3/16 extending below the leading edgeasshown. Be careful not to stretch the tape as youapply it, as this will cause the wing to warp.(fig. G)
Step 6
Make the final fold as shown. Pinch the folddown tightly all the way along. (fig. E)

Tape downleading edge
fig. F
Taping the leading edgeof the wing down can bea bit tricky, but I knowyou can do it! Just getit lined up like I show in
fig. G. Be carfule not tostretch the tape when
you put it on because itwill warp the wing. Wingwarppage . . . bummer!

Optional: To improve the appearance of yourmonocopter, mark the edges of both counter
weight pieces with a black permanent marker asshown. The sides of the counter weights will be
marked in another step. (fig. L)
Step 11

Apply a thin bead of high temp hot glue aroundthe inside of the counter weight location lines asshown. Be sure to only apply a thin bead of glueto avoid adding too much weight. (fig. M)
Step 12
Working quickly while the glue is still hot, attachone of the counter weights to the wing. Alignthe counter weight with the outside of thegraphic as shown. Attach the second counterweight to the opposite side. (fig. N)
Step 13

Mark the edges of
both counter weights
Marking the edges and sidesof your counter weights isoptional, but I think itmakes the monocopter lookmuch better. If you aregoing to build it, why notmake it look as good as youcan, right?

Flying Your Sonic Mini MonocopterHolding Method 1: If you are launchingin a room with high ceilings or outside, then use this method. Hold yourmonocopter like this with the leadingedge of the wing up, and the counterweight pointing down. I will show you howto throw it on the next page.

Holding Method 2: If you are launchingin a room with low ceilings, then use thismethod. Hold your monocopter like thiswith the trailing edge of the wing up, andthe counter weight pointing down. I willshow you how to throw it on the next
page.

Try this: Once you get thehang of throwing yourmonocopter from theground, try flying from an
elevated surface. You canget even longer flightswhen you throw yourmonocopter using the sametechnique as you use on theground, but standing at asecond story railing orfrom a tree house or someother safe elevatedsurface. See what funmonocopter launchingzones you can come up with. . . Cool!
Project #48 Page 10/15

Launching: To launch your monocopter, justrotate you wrist upward as you move your armin an upward throwing motion. The idea is tothrow the monocopter up in the air with thecounter weight at the top like this. Holdingmethod 1 will give you the highest flightbefore the monocopter begins to auto-rotateand descend back to the ground.
