I have recently received a printer ribbonre - i nk ing dev i ce f o r eva lua t i on . I hadseen the p roduc t a t the fa l l computershow, and contacted the manufacturer, BorgIndustries of Janesville, Iowa.This firm makes two re-inkers, the E-ZEEINKER and the INK MASTER. The first Itemis a low cost ($39.95) manually powereddevice to re- ink pr inter r ibbons, and ist h e s u b j e c t o f t h i s r e v i e w. T h e I N KMASTER Is a motor driven unit that islarger and differs considerably from theE-ZEE INKER. The INK MASTER was nottested.The promise of being able to renew printerr ibbons in my office on a l imited scalewas too much to resist. I ordered an E-ZEEINKER.In some ways the machine is well conceivedand made, but I t has flaws. The unit Ireceived differed in some details from thep r o d u c t i l l u s t r a t i o n s I h a v e . T h e i n kreservoir is a piece of 3/4" diameter by2" aluminum tubing mounted vertically onthe base plate. A sl ice is cut from theside of tne tube and a chunk of coarsegray fe l t is inser ted in the opening tomake the ink wick.I fol lowed the directions about applyingthe ink to the felt. The next day the inkh a d n o t s a t u r a t e d t h e f e l t . I a p p l i e dmore ink. And again, and again, and again,e t c . I t a p p e a r s t h a t t h e i n k r e s e r v o i rcou ld eas i l y ho ld ha l f o f the 2 ouncebottle of ink that came packed with theuni t before" i t was ready to work. A farcry from the 10 to 20 drops the directionsindicated.To ink a ribbon cartridge, it is clampedin place up-side-down in order to haveaccess to tne drive spindle or gear. Thenext s tep is» to pos i t ion and lock thedrive arm, which has a small crank. Thenthe ribbon is threaded over the felt inkw ick , tens ioned and manua l l y c rankedthrough the cartridge. An estimate of 10minutes to crank through an Epson ribbonwould not be excessive.How did it work? The manual drive on theunit would not stay locked in place andh a d t o b e c o n t i n u a l l y r e - t i g h t e n e d .Operat ion of the manual dr ive Is s low,tiring and frustrating because of the needto proceed carefully in order to keep thedr i ve cen te red In the r i bbon ca r t r i dgespindle. In spi te the care used, i t wasnecessary to stop frequently to lock thedrive in place. The dr ive arm is poorlydesigned. The lock is located far from thecrank on the arm and allows considerablemovement because the principle of leverageIs work ing aga ins t the lock . The dr ive
bits were poorly made and, for the ribbonsI was working with, it was necessary toinsert a loose metal blade with a slot init into the drive spindle and then engagethe drive blade with the slot. This meansthat there is a loose metal blade floatingbetween the drive blade and the spindle.This made it even harder to keep the drivecentered.Af ter a few at tempts to use the E-ZEEINKER as intended, I removed the drive armentirely and reassembled the clamping armto get i t lower. I then reposi t ioned thecartr idge to get the drive spindle bettersupported. I then used a variable speede l e c t r i c d r i l l ( r u n v e r y s l o w ) a n a as u i t a b l e p o w e r d r i v e r b i t t o r u n t h eribbon through the cartridge. This worked.It took about 4 to 5 minutes.The ribbon cartridges were left overnightto let the ink soak into the r ibbon andbecome even. They were then tested in thepr in te r. They work i us t fine . I am s t i l lusing the re-inked ribbons.A s f o r t h e E - Z E E I N K E R , i t i s adisappointment. I would not recommend it.I wi l l be contacting the manufacturer tolet them know of my conclusions.I may keep the uni t and use i t wi th ava r iab le speed e lec t r i c d r i l l as I havedescribed.

This would give me thet o t a l o f a l l t h e c e l l s i n t h e r a n g eindicated without having to specify eachcell in the range.But I could not enter the @ sign! This wasespecially puzzling because I had alreadyused that function in the same model ▶ Thecause of the problem? I had added lowercase capability to my Apple ] [+ since Ihad last used that command. Now a shift Pto where the @ lives gave me a P. Theanswer to this problem was to go to theCONFIGURATION SUBSYSTEM MENU and lie to myA p p l e a n d t e l l i t t h a t I d i d n o t h a v elower case capabil i ty.This worked, and it was just a momentseffort to do and then to restore the lowercase capab i l i t y when I needed i t w i t hMag iCa lc aga in . I had to do the samething to type the @ sign when writing thisa r t i c l e .

My first impression was that it was not avery usable program... very gimmicky. Andt h a t ' s w h y i t s a t o n t h e s h e l f f o r l othese many months. But, when USED, itturns out to be a great little package.I'm not sure how BB is trying to markett h i s excep t as a u t i l i t y f o r examin ingprogram listings, but it certainly is moret h a n t h a t . w h i l e b e i n g l e s s o f aprogramming tool than, say, GPLE, it isextremely nandy for debugging your nextproj ect.Its primary feature is that you can have alisting scroll up and down on the screen( f o r w a r d a n d b a c k w a r d t h r o u g h t h eprogram).
