Professor Jorge Faber Dr. Faber is Professor of Evidence Based Dentistry and Orthodontics at the Dental Post-Graduate Program of the University of Brasilia. He uses his editorial background to stimulate keen analysis of the scientific literature, since he served for 11 years as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the World Federation of Orthodontists and the Dental Press Journal of Orthodontics. He holds a PhD degree on Biology-Morphology, and a Master’s degree in Orthodontics, and is a Diplomate of the Brazilian Board of Orthodontics. Dr. Faber has lectured extensively in many countries and has published over 100 articles in scientific journals. He also maintains a private practice in Brasilia, which is focused on adult patients.

Synopsis of Lecture: Skeletal anchorage has changed orthodontic treatment. It allows tridimensional control of tooth movement with low patient compliance. Miniscrews and miniplates can be used. However, in several circumstances, miniplates have advantages over miniscrews, since brackets, tubes, and other accessories can be bonded to the miniplate, expanding the orthodontic mechanics possibilities. Miniplate surgical placement is a technique sensitive procedure. These presentations will cover how to properly install the device, as well as how to use it for open bite correction, complex space closure of missing teeth, non-extraction treatment of bialveolar dental protrusion with TADs, and Class III camouflage in adults.

Professor Heiko SpallekProfessor Heiko Spallek serves as Acting Head of School and Dean at The University of Sydney School of Dentistry. Prior to joining the University of Sydney, Professor Spallek served as Associate Dean at the University of Pittsburgh. In 1993, he graduated as DMD from the Humboldt University, Berlin where he continued his career and was appointed in the Department of Periodontology and also received his PhD (dental material sciences). While being appointed at Temple University School of Dentistry in Philadelphia, he earned an MSBA (Computer and Information Science) in 2000. Professor Spallek’s research has as its focus the development of computerized clinical decision support tools—he published more than 60 peer-reviewed papers and a textbook for Dental Informatics.

Synopsis of Lecture: Professor Heiko Spallek, one of the pioneers and leaders in the field of Dental Informatics, will present about the emerging role of data in health care. He will share his views on how Big Data can guide the scientific decision-making process for public health officials and for private practitioners, if we manage to harness data that are routinely collected during the care delivery process. He will compare paper records with electronic ones focusing on current shortcomings of electronic systems, specifically their lack of interoperability and usability. Returning to the value of data for the decision-making process, he will explain what clinicians can learn from aggregated data. He will outline the vision of a Learning Health System.

Dr Alexander Holden Dr Alexander Holden graduated with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery from the University of Sheffield in 2011 and worked in public and private dental care in the UK, before moving to Australia in 2015. He has gained Masters degrees in law and dental public health. Alexander is currently Head of Discipline for Professional Practice which is concerned with ethics, law, professionalism, sociology and communications within the context of dentistry. Alexander’s research has several approaches, from qualitative sociological work, to critically examining ethical issues and legal analysis. He also works in private practice and is a member of the NSW Registrations Committee of the Dental Board of Australia.

Synopsis of Lecture: What is the professional purpose of dentistry and where are the limits of this duty? Traditional arguments centre on the idea that true professional purpose can only relate to the curing of disease or the alleviation of pain and suffering. This presentation will look at recent philosophical research that restates the idea of professional purpose in relation to orthodontic practice, demonstrating how this disciplinary area within dentistry is firmly within the professional remit of the social contract. This presentation will provide delegates with an overview of past discussion of the position of orthodontics within the medical and philosophical literature, and with an update based on contemporary research.
