Preface

Research and Innovation Rheinland-Pfalz

Research, technology and innovation are becoming increasingly im-portant in the face of increasing demands on the modern knowled-ge society. Market success can often only be achieved using new technologies and innovations in global competition. Presentations of current research and development results, new products and pro-cesses as well as innovative service management models at trade fairs are central instruments of knowledge and technology transfer.

To provide the Rheinland-Pfalz region with an ideal environment for a successful presentation of its research and innovation Research, the Ministry of Science, Further Education and Culture and the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Transport, Agriculture and Viticulture of the State of Rhein-land-Pfalz jointly support the organisation and implementation of research pavilions at interna-tional leading technology-oriented trade fairs.

In this connection one focus is on presentations of the potential areas identified in the country‘s innovation strategy (e.g. ICT, sensor technology, materials and life sciences) in order to strengt-hen the innovative capacity and competitive position of Rheinland-Pfalz. At the same time, the exchange processes between science and industry, the promotion of key technologies as well as the acquisition of specialist and top-level forces are supported. In addition to universities and non-university research facilities, knowledge-based entrepreneurs, innovative companies and technology-oriented platforms, initiatives, networks and clusters will be enabled to present their innovative projects and technological solutions too.

I would like to thank all the participants for their great commitment, and I expect the presenta-tions to have a visibility far beyond the borders of Rheinland-Pfalz.

Prof. Dr. Konrad WolfMinister for Science Further Education and Cultureof the federal state of Rheinland-Pfalz

Improved material performance by fiber‐reinforcements for injection molding inserts – complex application possibilities with

high cost‐efficiency

In  cooperation  with  A  +  Composites  GmbH  and  the  Institute  for  Composite Materials, the competence network for plastics technology in Rhineland‐Palatinate Kom‐K‐Tec  presents  fiber‐reinforced  injection‐molded  inserts  for  increased material performance of plastic components.

Injection molding  for  plastic  components  opens  up  a  wide  range  of  geometric design possibilities and  is  therefore widely used. The main  challenges are within material performance. These are addressed with the developed  injection molding inserts.  In  an  automated  tape  laying  process,  load‐bearing  reinforcement structures are created, which are inserted into the mold in the subsequent injection molding  process  and  over molded with  plastic.  This  results  in  components with great  geometric  flexibility,  while  at  the  same  time  greatly  increasing  material performance is assured.

Improved medical efficacy and higher wearing comfort – unique features for orthoses and prostheses

The  A+  Composites  GmbH  presents  in  cooperation  with  the  University  of Kaiserslautern a novel method to process continuous fiber reinforced composites in medical engineering.

A combination of the customizable features of the fiber‐reinforced composites and the  possibilities  of  the  newly  developed  thermoplastic  tape  placement  process allows  products  with  unique  features.  Particularly  for  orthoses,  this  means  for example a direction‐dependent adjustment of stiffness, high flexibility as well as a post‐production reshaping directly at the customer. Based on the A+ Composites Technology,  a  new  class  of  products  can  be  manufactured  which  do  not  only convince by a higher medical efficacy but also by 30‐50%  less  skin contact,  their ultra‐lightweight and therefore by a higher wearing comfort.

This is enabled by an innovative merging and selective heating of fiber and polymer in  the production process. Further,  it  is  for  the  first  time possible  to  impregnate thermoplastic  composites  during  the  tape  placement  process.  In  addition,  the elimination  of  previously  indispensable  refining  stages  decreases material  costs drastically.

Composite Aneurysm‐Clip for brain surgery eliminates artefacts

An aneurysm is a local blood filled bulging of a blood vessel, and its presence can be  very  dangerous,  as  a  ruptured  aneurysm  may  lead  to  life‐threatening bleedings. Traditionally, mainly metallic titanium alloys are used in the human body. A standard treatment clamps the aneurysm at its base using a clip, so that it  can be  emptied on purpose. Currently,  all  aneurysm  clips  available on  the market are metallic and therefore limit the visibility and possibility of monitoring postoperative  conditions  by  CT  scan  (computer  tomography)  and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Within the project InnoClip IVW forms a team together with NEOS Surgery S.L. and ADETE® ‐ Advanced Engineering & Technologies GmbH, dedicated to the development of a new x‐ray transparent aneurysm clip based on biocompatible materials,  namely  carbon  reinforced  composites.    The  use  of  polymeric materials  reduces  the  formation  of  x‐ray  or  MRI‐artifacts  during  imaging procedures compared  to  titanium alloy aneurysm clips and enables  less  time consuming, more cost‐effective and less risky patient follow‐ups.

The project  InnoClip was realized within the European Eurostars program and the German partners were funded by the German Federal Ministry of Research and Education.   Dipl.‐Sporting. Matthias Bendler Institut für Verbundwerkstoffe GmbH Erwin‐Schrödinger‐Str. Geb. 58 D‐67663 Kaiserslautern  Tel: +49 (0)631 2017‐339 Mail: [email protected]‐kl.de    www.ivw.uni‐kl.de

Sustainability – a challenge for everybody Sustainability Office – University of Kaiserslautern

With 3Digify building high-quality, inexpensive 3D scanners at home

How can sustainability be structurally anchored in complex and dynamic organizational structures? To handle this challenge, the University of Kaiserslautern founded a sustainability office in 2016. Next to its main task of editing a sustainability report, the office is also an initiative that gives students and employees the opportunity to contribute to university sustainability by their own voluntary projects. Accordingly, the office deals with interdisciplinary “top-down” as well as “bottom-up” projects.

For the University of Kaiserslautern, “sustainability” means ecological, economic and social sustainability in the areas education, research, operations and governance as well as knowledge transfer.

Our goal is a dialogue with other universities, scientific institutions and companies regarding the institutionalization of sustainability management. Relevant concerns are: What should be the design of university education to satisfy the interdisciplinary requirements of sustainability management? How to design the transfer of knowledge from current sustainability research projects at the University of Kaiserslautern?

VICINITY Towards a digital Neighbourhood that we can trust

The VICINITY project will build and demonstrate a platform and ecosystem for IoT infrastructures that will offer "Interoperability as a Service". The platform aims to be device and standard agnostic, and will rely on a decentralised and user-centric approach. VICINITY aims to retain full control of the ownership and distribution of data across the different IoT domains.

VICINITY will be demonstrated during its project lifetime in the domains of Energy, Mobility, E-Health and Building Automation. However, the concept is directly applicable to other domains like e.g. Industry 4.0 as well.

Next Generation biofilm ‐ the "Rose of Jericho" of biotechnology  Food production and the production of energy as well as the production of valuable substances are becoming more and more competing (plate or tank problems). One of the major challenges facing  the  future  is  thus  to  make  the  growing  demand  for  food,  energy  and  materials sustainable with a low consumption of agricultural space, energy and water. The sustainable production of proteins (proteins), lipids (fats) And carbohydrates (sugars and polysaccharides) by cyanobacteria, microalgae or plants have central meanings. Cyanobacteria  harbor  e.g.  an  enormous  pool  of  renewable  biopharmaceuticals  and  fine chemicals.  However,  this  potential  is  scarcely  developed  because  previous  production processes are both energy and resource intensive. On the other hand, this project, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), uses photosynthetic drying‐tolerant  biofilms  (terrestrial  cyanobacteria)  for  the  water  vapor‐controlled  production  of bacterial  polysaccharides  and  dyes.  A  resource‐efficient  and  energy‐efficient  process technology  is used, which  is realized by means of a novel emersen photobioreactor  (ePBR) generation. The new system solution combines green and white / industrial biotechnology to optimize a 20‐40%. more cost‐effective and environmentally friendly production process for biopharmaceuticals and fine chemicals.  An  interdisciplinary  research  group  led  by  Prof.  Lakatos,  Prof  Groß  (both  Kaiserslautern University  of  Applied  Sciences),  Prof.  Ulber  (TU  Kaiserslautern),  Prof.  Schmidt  (Augsburg University of Applied Sciences), Daniel Abendroth (INOGRAM, Stuttgart), economic experts of engage AG and Prof. Wahl (Trier University of Applied Sciences – Umwelt Campus Birkenfeld) is developing a new  indoor photobioreactor  in the  laboratory scale, which produces valuable substances by means of terrestrial microalgae biofilms by means of emerse air‐guided fermentation methods.

Development of Redox Flow Systems and System Components Vanadium Redox Flow Battery In a vanadium redox flow battery (VRB) electric energy is stored in liquid electrolytes. So, power rating (determined by the cell size) and amount of energy stored (determined by the electrolyte tank size) can be adjusted independently to match applications such as residential energy storage, wind power, photovoltaics, or grid stabilisation. A major advantage of the vanadium system is the use of vanadium electrolytes at both electrodes which overcomes familiar problems with electrolyte mixing through the membranes employed.

Sensor for the state-of-charge measurement Apart from the cell voltage which serves as an indicator of the state-of-charge, there are currently no robust sensors for this type of redox flow battery available. As the electrolyte solutions are strongly coloured, an optical sensor system has successfully been developed at Umwelt-Campus Birkenfeld. Both redow flow system and sensor are on display.

Biogenic materials for a sustainable future

Plastic moldings play an  increasingly  important role  in  industry.  In order to reduce the use of petrochemical raw materials  for the molded parts and  to achieve good recycling possibilities, biogenic,  fiber‐reinforced  plastics, with  a  focus  on  biogenic  duroplastics,  are  developed  and studied at the Technical University (TH) Bingen.

TH Bingen is thus entering new territory, since the use of the more powerful biogenic thermosets for molded parts has  so  far been  scarce. Rather, biogenic  thermoplastics are generally used. However, particularly biogenic thermosets are ideal starting materials for natural fiber reinforced composites due to their mechanical, thermal and chemical resistance.

At the Hannover Messe, the Technische Hochschule Bingen will be showing a portfolio of selected biogenic  composites  and  their  starting materials.  The materials  are presented  as  application examples in the form of cafeteria trays.

The trays reach 80 to 90% of biogenic, i.e. renewable parts. This greatly reduces the use of fossil resources.  In  addition,  the  biogenic  composites  can  be  used  energetically  in  the  first approximation of CO2‐neutral energy.
