Letter by J .H. Alter who has just arrived in St.Paul and gives a most interestingdescription and his impressions of what he has observed. The following extractsare from the letter. "The gentlemen who were to arrange wi th me about going toFort Ridgely & take charge of the Sutler's Store there, have not done so, altho itis now over 2 weeks since Me.Steel [Franklin, sutler at Ft.Snelling] (who is thecapitalist and resides near here at Fort Snelling) spoke to me about it & at sametime desired to wait until Mr.Randall who resides at the store, should come down.Hesaid Mr.R. would sanction any thing he (Hr.Steel) did .... Now Fort Ridgely is 160miles west of this .... about 200 men are stationed there and Indians all around. The business is a certain one & a good one ... In the spring if I siuted them I was tohave a partnership ... in 10 years I would make a fortune .... Yesterday I concludedI would wait upon them no longer, but make at.r;angements to leave to day and go downto New Orleans .... St.Paul is still a rather rough place - It is pleasantly sitiuated some 50 or 60 feet above the Mississippi & has some fine public buildings in it.It is growing very rapidly and I think it is destined to become a large ci ty, and'iui te a depot for all the trade & commerce of the North West .... In consequence of mydetermination to leave yesterday, I thought I would see a Mr.Winslov, who has beenerecting a large 4, story brick Hotel, vi th Stores below, and who is going on thiswinter to N. York & contract to get his furni ture made - and had a talk wi th him, andsaid that you might perhaps be vi1.1.10g to rent the corner store" He continuesabout business prospects and hope Mr. Winslow "'ill contact him back east. In closing "The water in the river is so low that the steamboats get up here only ",ith thegreatest difficulty - The Steamer Dr Franklin is expected in every moment, and willgo out again to day the moment she discharges her freight ... I shall go down in heras far as Galena to which place she runs - There I will take another boat to St.Louis& from there go to New Orleans .... J .H. Alter"
