GOPHERS TRAVEL TO FACE NATIONALLY-RANKED PENN ST.

The Minnesota Golden Gophers, coming off a 35-20 Homecoming victory over Purdue, will open a stretch of back-to-back games against nationally-ranked opponents Saturday at Penn State. Minnesota will travel to Columbus, Ohio for a contest vs. Ohio State next week.

Saturday’s matchup at Beaver Stadium is just the 11th in the series between Penn State and Minnesota. Kickoff in the game for the Governor’s Victory Bell is set for 3:30 p.m. ET.

Penn State is coming off a 52-3 throttling of Eastern Illinois last week in University Park, Pa.. The Nittany Lions are 5-1 overall and 1-1 in the Big Ten. Penn State’s only loss was a 21-10 home loss to Iowa.

ABC will televise the game regionally, with the rest of the nation seeing the game on ESPN. Sean Mc-Donough will call the play-by-play, Matt Millen will be the analyst and Holly Rowe will be on the sidelines.

SCOUTING MINNESOTAWith a 4-2 record, Minnesota has come from behind in each of its victories this season. The Gophers trailed in the fourth quarter in each of their first three wins. Last week vs. Purdue, Minnesota trailed 10-0 after the first quarter, but took a 14-13 lead at halftime and pulled away to a 35-20 victory.

Quarterback Adam Weber returns after taking nearly every snap for the past two-plus seasons. He set the Minnesota single-season records for passing yardage (2,895), TDs passing (24), completions (258) and attempts (449) in 2007. Earlier this season, he became the Gophers’ career completions leader and currently has a total of 609. Wide receiver Eric Decker set a Minnesota record for career receptions vs. Cal and currently has 215. Two weeks ago vs. Wisconsin, Decker became the Gophers’ career receiving yardage leader (current total is 3,050 yards). He was a Biletnikoff Award finalist and All-Big Ten in 2008.

Defensively, Minnesota is allowing 23.8 points per game. The Gophers rank No. 60 in the nation in scoring defense. The Gopher linebacking corps has had at least one double-digit tackler in each game this season. Nate Triplett, Lee Campbell and Simoni Lawrence are the starters at LB. Backup linebacker Keanon Cooper had 10 stops last week. Up front, Eric Small (15 tackles, 3 TFL, 3 sacks, FF) leads the way. The secondary returns three starters -- CBs Marcus Sherels and Traye Simmons and safety Kyle Theret. Simmons notched his first interception of the season last week vs. Purdue.

SCOUTING PENN STATEPenn State comes into this week’s game with a 5-1 overall record and a 1-1 mark in the Big Ten. The Nittany Lions have an average margin of victory of 27.4 points in their five wins. Their lone loss came at home to Iowa in a 21-10 setback.

Penn State is coached by legendary Joe Paterno, who is in his 43rd season as the head coach in State College, Pa. Paterno is the all-time leader in coaching victories among major college football coaches. He was the 2008 Big Ten Coach of the Year.

Offensively, Penn State is one of the more prolific teams in the Big Ten. The Nittany Lions are No. 23 in the nation in total offense, No. 32 in rushing and No. 39 in passing. They are averaging 31.1 points per game, rank-ing No. 38. Defensively, Penn State is even better. The Nittany Lions rank No. 6 in the country in scoring defense, No. 8 in total defense, No. 8 against the run and No. 26 against the pass.

(Oct. 10, 2009) -- Big plays from defense and special teams carried Minnesota to a 35-20 Homecoming victory over Purdue. The Gophers forced three turnovers and converted two into short touchdown drives, while also getting a 47-yard blocked field goal return for a touchdown.

Purdue jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter. But Minnesota finally answered midway through the second quarter, driving 84 yards in eight plays. A 47-yard completion from QB Adam Weber to WR Eric Decker set up a short DeLeon Eskridge touchdown run to make it 10-7. Less than a minute later, Lee Campbell picked off an Purdue pass returned it to the 2-yard line. Eskridge then scored his second one-yard rushing touchdown of the game with 4:36 left in the first half to put Minnesota up 14-10.

Minnesota led 14-13 at the intermission. In the third quarter, a seven-yard punt by the Boilermakers put the Gophers in business at the Purdue 30-yard line. A 28-yard Kevin Whaley run and a two-yard run by Weber put Minnesota up 21-13. Keanon Cooper forced a fumble on the ensuing kickoff, which was recovered by the Gophers’ Bryan Klitzke. Five plays later, Whaley scored his first career TD and Minnesota was up 28-13. Minnesota capped its scoring late in the third quarter when Lee Campbell blocked a field goal and Traye Simmons returned it for a 47-yard score and a 35-13 lead.

THE PENN STATE SERIES

LAST TIME VS. PENN STATE

Saturday’s game will be the 11th gridiron meeting between the University of Minnesota and Penn State University. Penn State leads the series 6-4.

The two teams have not met since 2006, when the Nittany Lions took a 28-27 win in overtime. Penn State won the first four meetings in the series, while the Gophers won the next four. The Nittany Lions have won the last two.

(Oct. 7, 2006 - Minneapolis) -- The University of Minnesota football team lost a heartbreaker, falling 28-27 in overtime to Penn State. The Golden Gophers rallied from a 21-14 deficit to score with 1:02 remaining, forcing the extra session.

Minnesota scored on the first possession of overtime on an Eric Decker 25-yard touchdown reception, but kicker Jason Giannini missed the extra point, leaving Minnesota with a 27-21 lead. The Nittany Lions scored on a 2-yard touchdown run by Tony Hunt and Kevin Kelly gave PSU the win with the extra point.

Minnesota took possession at its own 14-yard line 2:33 to go, trailing 21-14. Bryan Cupito found Logan Payne on fourth down for a 43-yard reception to get Minnesota to the PSU 36-yard line. Matt Spaeth later moved the Golden Gophers to the 1-yard line with a 30-yard reception down the middle. Amir Pinnix punched it in to knot the game at 21-21.

Cupito passed for 347 yards and two touchdowns. Spaeth led all receivers with six catches for 99 yards and one TD. Decker had four catches for 66 yards. Pinnix ran for 76 yards and recorded two TDs.

The Gophers hold a 332-353-28 record against current and former members of the Big Ten Conference. Minnesota holds a winning record against six of the other 10 current members of the conference. The Gophers have had their most success against Northwestern (50-30-5). Minnesota has struggled the most with Ohio State (7-41-0).

This season, Minnesota will play Northwestern, Wisconsin, Pur-due, Penn State, Ohio State, Michigan State, Illinois and Iowa. The Gophers will not face Michigan or Indiana in the 2009 Big Ten Conference schedule

GOPHER HEAD COACH TIM BREWSTERIn two short years as the head football coach at the University of Minnesota, Tim Brewster has taken some big steps toward getting Golden Gopher program back to its rightful place in the world of college football.

Brewster has used his boundless energy to bring in two highly-regarded recruiting classes. On the field, the Gophers returned to postseason play in 2008. In 2008, Brewster’s squad raced out to a 7-1 record to open the season. The Gophers were ranked No. 17 in the BCS at the end of October. Minnesota took part in the 2008 Insight Bowl, as Brewster led the Gophers to one of year’s biggest turnarounds.

A renewed emphasis on recruiting may be the most visible phase of Brewster’s plan. That was proven out in February of each of the past two seasons. Brewster and his staff signed a consensus top-25 recruiting class that some experts even rated among the nation’s top 15 in 2008. Brewster and his staff followed that up with a 2009 class that ranked in the top third of the nation.

But recruiting is just one building block of a blueprint Brewster developed while helping Mack Brown turn North Carolina into a national power and rebuild Texas into one of the country’s elite programs.

Brewster came to Minnesota after spending the previous five years as an assistant coach in the National Football League, including the 2005 and 2006 seasons as the tight ends coach of the Denver Broncos. In addition to his productivity as a college recruiter, Brewster has also built a strong reputation for developing players during his 23-year coaching career.

Last season, wide receiver Eric Decker and defensive end Willie VanDeSteeg both earned first-team All-Big Ten honors. Decker set a Minnesota record for receptions in a season for the second consecutive year and became just the third Gopher wideout to record a 1,000-yard receiving season. VanDeSteeg finished his career as the school’s all-time leader in tackles for loss and finished No. 4 all-time in sacks.

It marked the first time the Gophers had multiple first-team All-Big Ten selections since 2005. VanDeSteeg’s honor was also the first time a Minnesota defender had been voted to the first team since 2004. In his first season at Minnesota, Brewster mentored then-freshman quarterback Adam Weber, who broke nearly all of the Gophers’ single-season passing and total offense records in 2007. Weber contin-ued to improve in his sophomore campaign and was a 2008 second-team All-Big Ten selection.

In all, Minnesota had six athletes earn all-conference accolades in 2008, the most since the Gophers had a half-dozen on the 2005 All-Big Ten squad.



AYE, CAPTAIN!

NOTHIN’ BUT NET

The Golden Gophers elected six captains prior to the 2009 season. Seniors Garrett Brown, Lee Campbell, Eric Decker, Simoni Lawrence and Eric Small join junior Adam Weber with that distinction this season.

Weber was the first sophomore ever to serve as a team captain at the University of Minnesota last season and is now a two-time captain. Decker is also a two-time team captain.

The Gophers have only had 13 players ever earn the distinction of captain twice in their career. Weber would be the first-ever three-year Gopher captain should he be voted as such next season.

Through the first six games of the 2009 season, Minnesota’s net punting average (punt yardage-minus return yards/touchbacks) ranks No. 12 in the nation. The Gophers’ net punting average is 39.89 yards per punt. The Gophers have punted 28 times with three punts of 50-plus yards, eight fair catches and eight punts downed inside the 20-yard line. Opponents are averaging just 3.0 yards per return against the Minnesota punt coverage team and have only returned 12 of the 28 Gopher punts.

RETURN TO SENDERThe return game was a definite strength for the Gophers in 2008. Minnesota was the No. 2 team in the Big Ten and ranked No. 15 in the nation in average kickoff return yards. The Gophers averaged 24.04 yards per kickoff return last season. The longest kickoff return last season was turned in by Troy Stoud-ermire, who went 60 yards at the Insight Bowl vs. Kansas.

The Gophers nearly doubled their punt-return average in 2008, averaging 9.94 yards per return. Min-nesota ranked No. 5 in the Big Ten and No. 46 in the nation in punt returns.

Halfway through the 2009 season, the Gophers have continued to improve in the return game. Minnesota ranks No. 7 in the country and No. 1 in the Big Ten with an average punt return of 19.0 yards, but they’ve only returned three punts all season. The Gophers are averaging 27.0 yards per kickoff return, which ranks No. 12 in the nation and No. 2 in the conference. Minnesota has seen half (13) of its 26 kickoff returns go for 25 yards or more.

NO PASSING FANCYMinnesota passed just 10 times in last Saturday’s victory over Purdue. The Gophers were 5-of-10 for 74 yards with two interceptions in the air last week.

It was the fewest passes thrown by a Gopher squad since they tossed it nine times in a 45-42 win vs. Northwestern exactly seven years prior (Oct. 10, 2002). The five completions last week were the fewest since the Gophers completed five in a 20-16 win over Alabama on Dec. 30, 2004 at the Music City Bowl. The 74 yards were the fewest since the Gophers passed for 73 in a 29-27 loss vs. Iowa on Nov. 13, 2004. It was the lowest output in a win since throwing for 71 in a 20-14 win at Penn State on Sept. 27, 2003.

RUSH HOURMinnesota’s 207 yards rushing vs. Purdue last week were a season-high output on the ground. It was the first time the Golden Gophers have gone over the 200-yard mark since Sept. 20, 2008 when they ran for 206 vs. Florida Atlantic.

The last time Minnesota rushed for 200 yards or more vs. a Big Ten team was Oct. 13, 2007 when they rushed for 239 in a 49-48, double-overtime loss to Northwestern. Last week’s output vs. Purdue was also the highest rushing total for the Gophers since that contest at Northwestern.

Eight different Gophers ran the ball in the victory against the Boilermakers last week.

u Gopher quarterback Adam Weber continues to re-write the Minnesota record book. In Week 2, he set the Minnesota record for career completions (his total is now 609). The previous record of 539 comple-tions was held by Cory Sauter (1994-97). Four weeks ago, he set the Gopher career record for passing attempts (his total is now 1,027). Weber set single-season records for passing yards (2,985), comple-tions (258), attempts (449), touchdown passes (24) and total offensive yardage (3,512) in 2007. He now needs 566 yards to break the career mark for passing yardage (Bryan Cupito, 2003-06 - 7,446) and just 11 more touchdowns (Bryan Cupito, 2003-06 - 55) to break the career touchdown pass record.

u Adam Weber is the only QB on the Minnesota roster who has ever completed a collegiate pass.u Weber’s 74 yards passing last week vs. Purdue were a career-low. That output came just one week after he threw for a season-high 271 vs. Wisconsin.u Weber threw 19 interceptions in his first season as a starter in 2007. u Red-shirt freshman Kevin Whaley rushed for a career-best 79 yards on eight carries last week vs. Purdue. He averaged 9.9 yards per carry, toting the ball just eight times. Whaley also scored his first career touchdown vs. the Boilermakers. His first career touchdown came on a one-yard plunge in the third quarter. Six of Whaley’s carries last week went for five yards or more, while five went for eight yards or more. He also had rushes of 19 and 28 yards in the game.

u Duane Bennett scored on his first touch of the 2009 season, taking a carry for a 16-yard touchdown at Syracuse. It was his first touch since Sept. 6, 2008 when he suffered a season-ending knee injury.u Bennett scored three TDs at Northwestern earlier this year. He is the first Gopher to accomplish that feat since DeLeon Eskridge did it vs. Montana State on Sept. 13, 2008.u Bennett rushed for 56 yards last week and is the Gophers’ leading rusher, averaging 47.2 yds/game.u DeLeon Eskridge, a sophomore, rushed for more than 100 yards twice in 2008. u Eskridge scored two one-yard touchdowns less than two minutes apart last week vs. Purdue.u Whaley’s eight carries last week were also a career-high. u Senior wide receiver Eric Decker has etched his name at the top of four Minnesota records charts already in the 2009 season. Two weeks ago, he became Minnesota’s career receiving yardage record-holder and tied the school record for career 100-yard games. Earlier this season, he set a new record for career receptions and for consecutive 100-yard receiving games. Decker was a semi-finalist for the Biletnikoff Award as the nation’s top receiver in 2008. For two straight seasons, Decker set the Minne-sota single-season record for receptions. He hauled in 67 passes in 2007 and smashed that record with 84 receptions last season. Decker became just the fourth Gopher receiver ever to compile a 1,000-yard season in 2008, finishing with 1,074 yards to rank No. 2 on the school single-season chart.

The Gophers lost only Jason Meinke’s eight starts. u Senior center Jeff Tow-Arnett suffered a broken leg late in the Wisconsin game.u Sophomore Trey Davis took over after Tow-Arnett went down. u Junior long snapper Ryan Coleman has been very consistent since taking over the long-snapping duties last season. He has delivered 48 successful long snaps through six games this season (28 punt, 8 FG, 20 PAT). Coleman made 128 snaps in 2008, with only one bad snap.u Junior placekicker Eric Ellestad remained perfect on PATs (19-19), hitting all five attempts last week. GOPHER VICTORY WALKThe Golden Gopher football program saw a new tradition take shape in 2007, with the advent of the “Gopher Victory Walk.” Prior to each game, the entire Minnesota football team, led by the Minnesota Marching Band, will walk through the fans at the McNamara Alumni Center, cross Oak Street and head into TCF Bank Stadium.

Each Gopher Victory Walk will begin approximately two hours prior to kickoff.

The Minnesota Football program is encouraging fans to participate in the Gopher Victory Walk through-out the season, by lining the entire path from the McNamara Alumni Center to the stadium and greeting the players as they arrive on game day.

TAKE IT TO THE BANKWhen the Gophers hosted the Air Force Academy on Sept. 12, it marked the first time since Nov. 21, 1981 that college football has been played on campus at Minnesota.

TCF Bank Stadium is the first Big Ten Stadium built in nearly 50 years. Beaver Stadium (Penn State) and Memorial Stadium (Indiana) were both built in 1960. TCF Bank Stadium will be just the second new stadium built in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division I-A) and the first in a BCS conference since 1998. Akron also christened a brand-new stadium this season.

In May 2006, the Minnesota legislature made the stadium a reality, approving the $288.5 million facility. The stadium holds 50,805 fans and is an open-air facility. Construction began during the summer of 2007.

Saw extensive action against California as the fourth linebacker of the field and registered a career high six total tackles. 7 - Decker, EricOne of the nation’s premiere players an d among the Gophers all-time best. Now the Gophers career leader in receiving yards passing Ron Johnson with his 140 yard performance against Wisconsin and becomes the first Minne-sota player to surpass the 3,000 yard mark in his career. Ranks ninth in the nation with 114.8 receiving yards per game and seventh in the nation with 7.8 receptions per game. Has already become the school’s leader in career receptions and set a record with four consecutive 100-yard receiving games. Was held under 100 yards for the first time all season with 84 against Northwestern, but tied a season high with two touchdowns. Scored his first touchdown of the season against Cal, finished with two on the day, and had a hand in each of the Gopher’s scores as he threw a third to MarQuies Gray. Has led the Gophers in receiving in each game this season and is the Big Ten leader with 46 receptions and 689 yards receiving. The only player in the Big



Ten to average over 100 receiving yards per game at 114.8 and is tied for the lead in receiving touchdowns with five.

8 - Weber, Adam One of the all-time greats under center for the Golden Gophers. A starter in every game the last three seasons, he has become the Gophers all-time leader in pass completions. Threw his 1,000th pass against Wisconsin, and gained his 600th completion. His 204.0 passing yards per game rank seventh in the Big Ten. Threw for two touchdowns twice on the season, against Cal and again against Northwestern. Threw for over 200 yards in each of the Gophers first three games, and five times on the season. Posted his highest tallying passing this with 271 yards against Wisconsin.
