NEWS FROM THE FACTORY FLOOR

FASTENER PACKAGING EFFICIENCIESNew fastener packaging set-up logistics, improved work station ergonomics and automation enhance the production floor’s ability to quickly turn around any size run, large or small, of Malco’s popular fastener tubs. These packag-ing efficiencies range from fully automated large runs of top selling fastener types and sizes down to one-off special orders and custom packaging options, including co-branding! Greater efficiencies is one more reason why Malco does not hesitate to promote fast turn-around of custom packaged orders to our distributor partners. Co-branded tubs of high profile Malco Zip-in and Bit-Tip screws, for example, are a great promotional strategy for the distributor to get name recognition at the job site, capture new fastener customers and keep your existing fastener trade coming back for more. Ask your Malco Field Sales Representative or contact the Malco Customer Service Department to learn more about custom fastener tub options and ordering details.

The tub packaging operation for medium volume fastener items is now located adjacent to warehouse racking of bulk fasteners for semi-automated dispensing and weighing on one side of the aisle shown here. Tub packages are loaded onto gravity fed, finished inventory racking on opposite side of aisle.

Co-branded tubs promote distributor by getting name recognition at the job site.

Meet Jon OlsonTEAM SPOTLIGHTIf you happen to pull up next to Jon Olson at a stop-light somewhere around town, don’t throw him a look that says you can beat him off the line when the light turns green. You can’t. It’s not your fault; you just don’t have as much experience around rac-ing and cars as Jon does. You see, Jon, a Market Analyst/Mechanical-Manufacturing Engineer at Malco, has racing in his blood, it’s part of who he is. Jon tagged along with his dad, his grandfather, and an uncle even as a young boy, working at race tracks in Minnesota and Florida. During his teenage years, Jon worked at Olson Racing, where he built and maintained as many as five racing vehicles for his father, customers, and himself, while competing in as many as three local racing events a week.

Jon also found time in high school to excel at hock-ey, helping the Wayzata Jr. Gold team win a state championship his senior year. That trophy shares space on a shelf with several Super Late Model Track Championships he and his father won over the years at I-94 Speedway in Fergus Falls, MN. Jon graduated from Minnesota State University Mankato in 2009 with cum laude honors, majoring in automotive engineering technology with a minor in manufacturing engineering technology. Racing remained a big part of Jon’s life in college, as he

was a Formula SAE team member for three of his four years in school, and served as the lead in sus-pension development for two years and the chassis team leader during his senior year.

With all of that background, one would suspect that Jon would have ended up working in motorsports. Even Jon’s family members figured he’d be moving down to the Carolinas at some point, with that be-ing home plate for much of the racing world in the United States. Not so, as Jon married his wife Katie at the age of 22 in the fall of 2008, and they both realized they wanted to stay close to family.

“I wanted to raise my kids close to my family. My wife and I are lucky enough that we live within 10 minutes of both my parents and hers,” said Olson.

Jon worked for a motorsports manufacturing com-pany right out of college, wearing many hats, includ-ing developing racing products, presenting at trade shows, and providing customer focus spanning from automotive shops to NASCAR and ALMS teams. It was during this time that Jon realized how much he enjoyed working with people on challenging proj-ects, especially new product development. Jon then worked for Polaris Industries for five years, with a focus on ATVs and snowmobiles.

If all of this seems like a perfect lead up to Jon’s current position at Malco, well, it is.

“Since I was a kid, tagging along with my dad and others, often meant learning something new every day,” said Olson. “I vividly remember being on job sites at a young age, with a box of galvanized nails and a hammer, nail hangers on a deck, hammering away and wondering how I could nail the hangers faster and with fewer issues. That curiosity for a better method or a better tool helps me daily here at Malco, as I speak with our customers and the Co-operative Research team to learn what people would like to see in new products.”

Fun Facts About Jon:

• Jon and his wife Katie have two girls (Bergen, 7 and Nora, 5) and one boy (Bjorn, 3).

• During the winter, Jon can be found playing hockey and broomball or out on a ski hill with his family.

• Summers find Jon and his family spending time at the lake or camping (and as the kids get older, taking in their share of racing events!).

• Jon first replaced the cylinder head on a 4-cylinder engine at age 12 and learned to weld by sound at age 13!
