Chattanooga Lookouts beat Tennessee Smokies by one run for second straight game Staff Reporter – Time Free Press - 5/29/16

For the second straight night, the Chattanooga Lookouts won a one-run game against the Tennessee Smokies thanks to

a clutch hit from Travis Harrison.

This one was secured more efficiently, though.

Harrison's two-run double in the eighth inning proved the difference Saturday as the Lookouts beat the Smokies 3-2 in

front of an announced crowd of 4,765 at AT&T Field.

The win came a day after a 6-5 Lookouts victory in 11 innings that clocked in at 4 hours, 16 minutes. That's

Chattanooga's longest game of the season by 38 minutes despite the second-longest also being decided in 11 innings.

Harrison's deciding double followed a leadoff walk by Ryan Walker and a Dalton Hicks double, and Trevor

Hildenberger took the mound in the ninth for a 1-2-3 inning to earn his fifth save.

Corey Williams (2-0) pitched the seventh and eighth, allowing two hits and striking out three.

The Lookouts (22-27) took a 1-0 lead in the third on Harrison's two-out single that scored Zach Granite. Tennessee (22-

27) scored a run on a bases-loaded double play in the fifth and went ahead on Mark Zagunis' two-out home run in the

sixth.

The Lookouts have made a habit of close games this month, and their latest win put them above the .500 mark in such

contests. Seventeen of their 26 games in May have been decided by one run, with the Lookouts 9-8 in such finishes.

The five-game series wraps tonight, with first pitch at 6:15 and fireworks after the game. Also, the first 1,000 fans will

receive a Lookouts logo baseball.

Brad Markey (4-1, 2.59 ERA) is the probable starter for the Smokies, with Omar Bencomo (1-2, 3.32) scheduled to

start for the Lookouts, who are off Monday before starting a five-game series at Birmingham on Tuesday.

Stone Crabs sting Miracle 9-2 Staff Reporter – News-Press.com - 5/29/16

The Fort Myers Miracle fell 9-2 to the Charlotte Stone Crabs on Saturday night at Charlotte Sports Park.

Charlotte burst out to an early 2-0 in the bottom of the second inning. Justin Williams began the frame with a single up

the middle against Miracle starter Stephen Gonsalves. Mac James then doubled to deep left to put Crabs at second and

third base. Nick Ciuffo stepped in and flew out to left field. Williams tagged from third and scored. Logan Wade’s

throw from left was cut off. Engelb Vielma attempted to throw behind James at second, but his toss rolled into center

field and James took third.

Gonsalves (5-2) rallied to strike out Bralin Jackson, but Thomas Milone struck for a two-out RBI single up the middle

to plate James and put the Crabs up by a pair.

In the third, Charlotte took advantage of another Miracle throwing error. Andrew Velasquez started the third by laying

down a bunt. Gonsalves fielded the ball, but threw wild to first and Velasquez took second on the error. Cade Gotta

then slapped a single to right field to move runners to the corners. Williams then hit a high chopper to short and was

thrown out by Nick Gordon while Velasquez scored, 3-0.

The Miracle sliced the Crabs lead to a run in the top of the fifth. Tanner Witt led off the inning by lifting a high fly ball

that cleared the fence in left field for a home run. On a 2-1 pitch from Charlotte starter Chris Pike, Witt’s drive was

originally ruled in play, but the umpiring crew conferred and awarded Witt home plate. Three pitches later, Brian

Navarreto left no doubt on a solo blast to left field to cut the Stone Crabs’ edge to 3-2. The homers were Witt and

Navarreto’s first each of the season and in the Florida State League.

Gonsalves lasted six innings for the Miracle and surrendered three runs, two earned, on nine hits with one walk and

seven strikeouts. Gonsalves threw 91 pitches, 62 for strikes.

Todd Van Steensel entered the game in the seventh and tossed a perfect frame, but struggled in the eighth. Charlotte

sent 10 batters to the plate and scored six runs on six hits, capped off by a three-run homer from Grant Kay to push the

advantage to 9-2.

Pike (2-5) earned the win for the Crabs after going six innings with two runs allowed on five hits with two walks and

two strikeouts.

Miles Nordgren throws a gem but gets only no-decision out of C.R. Kernels loss to Wisconsin, 2-1, in 11 Jeff Johnson – The Gazette - 5/29/16

CEDAR RAPIDS — Miles Nordgren’s fastball probably never got any faster than 90 miles per hour Saturday night.

“That comes on a good day,” the Cedar Rapids pitcher said.

Truthfully, it was consistently in the high-80s. But in this day and age when baseball is a velocity crazed game, the

Cedar Rapids Kernels pitcher proved you don’t have to throw gas to strike guys out.

Strike a lot of guys out.

“No, but it’d definitely help if I did throw 94-plus,” Nordgren said, after his team’s 2-1, 11 inning loss to Wisconsin at

Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The right-hander fanned a career-high 12 in seven innings, yet took a no decision. At least that’s better than the loss he

was in line for until his teammates got him a game-tying run in the bottom of the ninth.

“It’s sinker, slow it down, spin it. Nordgren was really good,” said Kernels Manager Jake Mauer. “They really didn’t

square many balls up against him. We didn’t score any runs, but I thought we hit the ball way harder tonight than they

did. We just didn’t have any luck ... That’s just how baseball works sometimes. He was just really, really good.”

“I threw sliders today instead of curveballs,” Nordgren said. “I think the last time I threw against them, it was mainly

curveballs. I think the harder slider was working better. And I kept it low in the zone.”

Carlos Belonis led off the Wisconsin 11th with a single to left. Blake Allemand bunted, with Kernels reliever C.K. Irby

fielding and firing late to second, his throw hitting Belonis in the side of the face, allowing him to move to third.

Aviles followed with a sacrifice fly to right.

The Timber Rattlers pushed across the game’s first run in the sixth inning. Luis Aviles singled with two outs, stole

second base and scored on an Isan Diaz single to center.

Nordgren shattered Diaz’s bat with the pitch, but the ball ended up finding grass.

“I think I focused too much on that runner,” Nordgren said. “I should have focused more on the hitter. He got to

second, and I was behind in the count, had to throw a fastball to get out of a 2-1 count. Had I been in a 1-2 count, it

might have been a different story.”

The Kernels (27-21) had all kinds of baserunners but couldn’t bring any of them home, stranding eight, three at third

base, until the ninth.

“I think I focused too much on the runner there,” Nordgren said. “I should have focused more on the hitter. I got behind

in the count, had throw a

J.J. Fernandez doubled into the right-field corner leading off. Pinch runner Alex Perez went to third base on a slow

chopper to third and scored when Jermaine Palacios battled from a two-strike hole and delivered a sacrifice fly to

center field.

A 23-year-old right-hander from NCAA Division III Birmingham-Southern College in Alabama, Nordgren has been a

human yo-yo the past two seasons. This season alone, he was sent from Minnesota Twins extended spring training to

C.R. on April 10, went back to extended 10 days later and returned four days after that.

In 2015, he had a successful stint as a reliever but still spent the majority of his time at Rookie-level Elizabethton,

where he was a starter. He has five starts this season, four bullpen appearances.

“I kind of went through it last year,” he said. “I don’t want to say I was used to it, but I guess it has helped me go

through it last year and not let it faze me too bad. If I’m pitching, I’m pitching.”

He appeared to have a real good breaking ball that accounted for several of his Ks Saturday night. He struck out the

side in the second inning and two guys each in the third, fifth and sixth.

Williams Ramirez added five more strikeouts in relief, bringing C.R.’s total to 17.

The teams play again Sunday afternoon at 2:05. The Kernels remain in first place in the Midwest League’s Western

Division.
