Introduction

One of the common arguments people put forward in trying to disprove the prophethood of

Prophet Muhammad is to claim that he did not perform any miracles and also that he did not

make any prophecies. This of course, is not true. In an attempt to prove that indeed Prophet

Muhammad performed many miracles and made many prophecies, we present this small booklet

outlining just some of the authentically reported miracles and prophecies that he performed andforetold.

All of the material found in this small booklet is from the Quran and Sahih al-Bukhari, which is

a collection of the most authentic traditions about the Prophet.

It is our hope that this booklet will show you the truth of the prophethood of Prophet Muhammad

and of him being the final messenger of God sent to all of humanity.

1. Splitting the moon

The Last Hour is drawing near, the moon has split asunder.1

The people of Mecca requested the Prophet to show them a miracle, and so he showed them the

splitting of the moon.2

2. Lights accompanying his companions

Once, two companions of Prophet Muhammad went out of the house of the Prophet on a very

dark night. They were accompanied by two things that resembled two lamps lighting the way in

front of them, and when they parted, each of them was accompanied by one of those two lights

till they reached their homes.3

3. Traveled to Jerusalem and to the Seven heavens in one night

Malik bin Sasaa said that the Prophet described to them his Night Journey saying, "While

I was lying in Al-Hatim or Al-Hijr, suddenly someone came to me and cut my body open from

here to here." I asked Al-Jarud who was by my side, "What does he mean?" He said, "It means

from his throat to his pubic area," or said, "From the top of the chest." The Prophet further said,

"He then took out my heart. Then a gold tray of Belief was brought to me and my heart was

washed and was filled (with Belief) and then returned to its original place. Then a white animal

which was smaller than a mule and bigger than a donkey was brought to me." (On this Al-Jarud

asked, "Was it the Buraq, O Abu Hamza?" I (i.e. Anas) replied in the affirmative). The Prophet

said, "The animal's step (was so wide that it) reached the farthest point within the reach of the

animal's sight. I was carried on it, and Gabriel set out with me till we reached the nearest heaven.

When he asked for the gate to be opened, it was asked, 'Who is it?' Gabriel answered, 'Gabriel.' It

was asked, 'Who is accompanying you?' Gabriel replied, 'Muhammad.' It was asked, 'Has

Muhammad been called?' Gabriel replied in the affirmative. Then it was said, 'He is welcomed.

What an excellent visit his is!' The gate was opened, and when I went over the first heaven, I saw

Adam there. Gabriel said (to me). 'This is your father, Adam; pay him your greetings.' So I

greeted him and he returned the greeting to me and said, 'You are welcomed, O pious son and

pious Prophet.' Then Gabriel ascended with me till we reached the second heaven. Gabriel asked

for the gate to be opened. It was asked, 'Who is it?' Gabriel answered, 'Gabriel.' It was asked,

'Who is accompanying you?' Gabriel replied, 'Muhammad.' It was asked, 'Has he been called?'

Gabriel answered in the affirmative. Then it was said, 'He is welcomed. What an excellent visit

his is!' The gate was opened.

When I went over the second heaven, there I saw Yahya (i.e. John) and 'Isa (i.e. Jesus) who were

cousins of each other. Gabriel said (to me), 'These are John and Jesus; pay them your greetings.'

So I greeted them and both of them returned my greetings to me and said, 'You are welcomed, O

pious brother and pious Prophet.' Then Gabriel ascended with me to the third heaven and asked

for its gate to be opened. It was asked, 'Who is it?' Gabriel replied, 'Gabriel.' It was asked, 'Who

is accompanying you?' Gabriel replied, 'Muhammad.' It was asked, 'Has he been called?' Gabriel

replied in the affirmative. Then it was said, 'He is welcomed, what an excellent visit his is!' The

gate was opened, and when I went over the third heaven there I saw Joseph. Gabriel said (to me),

'This is Joseph; pay him your greetings.' So I greeted him and he returned the greeting to me and

said, 'You are welcomed, O pious brother and pious Prophet.' Then Gabriel ascended with me to

the fourth heaven and asked for its gate to be opened. It was asked, 'Who is it?' Gabriel replied,

'Gabriel.' It was asked, 'Who is accompanying you?' Gabriel replied, 'Muhammad.' It was asked,

'Has he been called?' Gabriel replied in the affirmative. Then it was said, 'He is welcomed, what

an excellent visit his is!'

The gate was opened, and when I went over the fourth heaven, there I saw Enoch. Gabriel said

(to me), 'This is Enoch; pay him your greetings.' So I greeted him and he returned the greeting tome and said, 'You are welcomed, O pious brother and pious Prophet.' Then Gabriel ascended

with me to the fifth heaven and asked for its gate to be opened. It was asked, 'Who is it?' Gabriel

replied, 'Gabriel.' It was asked. 'Who is accompanying you?' Gabriel replied, 'Muhammad.' It was

asked, 'Has he been called?' Gabriel replied in the affirmative. Then it was said, 'He is welcomed,

what an excellent visit his is!' So when I went over the fifth heaven, there I saw Aaron, Gabriel

said, (to me). This is Aaron; pay him your greetings.' I greeted him and he returned the greeting

to me and said, 'You are welcomed, O pious brother and pious Prophet.' Then Gabriel ascended

with me to the sixth heaven and asked for its gate to be opened. It was asked, 'Who is it?' Gabriel

replied, 'Gabriel.' It was asked, 'Who is accompanying you?' Gabriel replied, 'Muhammad.' It was

asked, 'Has he been called?' Gabriel replied in the affirmative. It was said, 'He is welcomed.

What an excellent visit his is!'

When I went (over the sixth heaven), there I saw Moses. Gabriel said (to me), 'This is Moses;

pay him your greeting. So I greeted him and he returned the greetings to me and said, 'You are

welcomed, O pious brother and pious Prophet.' When I left him (i.e. Moses) he wept. Someone

asked him, 'What makes you weep?' Moses said, 'I weep because after me there has been sent (as

Prophet) a young man whose followers will enter Paradise in greater numbers than my

followers.' Then Gabriel ascended with me to the seventh heaven and asked for its gate to be

opened. It was asked, 'Who is it?' Gabriel replied, 'Gabriel.' It was asked, 'Who is accompanying

you?' Gabriel replied, 'Muhammad.' It was asked, 'Has he been called?' Gabriel replied in the

affirmative. Then it was said, 'He is welcomed. What an excellent visit his is!'

So when I went (over the seventh heaven), there I saw Abraham. Gabriel said (to me), 'This is

your father; pay your greetings to him.' So I greeted him and he returned the greetings to me and

said, 'You are welcomed, O pious son and pious Prophet.' Then I was made to ascend to Sidrat-

ul-Muntaha4. Behold! Its fruits were like the jars of Hajr 5 and its leaves were as big as the ears of

elephants. Gabriel said, 'This is the Lote Tree of the utmost boundary.' Behold! There ran four

rivers; two were hidden and two were visible. I asked, 'What are these two kinds of rivers, O

Gabriel?' He replied, 'As for the hidden rivers, they are two rivers in Paradise and the visible

rivers are the Nile and the Euphrates.'

Then Al-Bait-ul-Ma'mur 6 was shown to me and a container full of wine and another full of milk

and a third full of honey were brought to me. I took the milk. Gabriel remarked, 'This is the

Islamic religion which you and your followers are following.' Then the prayers were enjoined on

me: They were fifty prayers a day. When I returned, I passed by Moses who asked (me), 'What

have you been ordered to do?' I replied, 'I have been ordered to offer fifty prayers a day.' Moses

said, 'Your followers cannot bear fifty prayers a day, and by Allah, I have tested people before

you, and I have tried my level best with Children of Israel (in vain). Go back to your Lord and

ask for reduction to lessen your followers' burden.' So I went back, and Allah reduced ten prayers

for me. Then again I came to Moses, but he repeated the same as he had said before. Then again

I went back to Allah and He reduced ten more prayers. When I came back to Moses he said the

same, I went back to Allah and He ordered me to observe ten prayers a day. When I came back to Moses, he repeated the same advice, so I went back to Allah and was ordered to observe five

 prayers a day.

When I came back to Moses, he said, 'What have you been ordered?' I replied, 'I have been

ordered to observe five prayers a day.' He said, 'Your followers cannot bear five prayers a day,

and no doubt, I have got an experience of the people before you, and I have tried my level best

with the Children of Israel, so go back to your Lord and ask for reduction to lessen your

follower's burden.' I said, 'I have requested so much of my Lord that I feel ashamed, but I am

satisfied now and surrender to Allah's Order.' When I left, I heard a voice saying, 'I have passed

My Order and have lessened the burden of My Worshipers."7

4. Hearing a palm tree cry

The Prophet used to stand by a stem of a date-palm tree (while delivering his sermons). When

the pulpit was placed for him we heard that tree crying like a pregnant she-camel till the Prophet

got down from the pulpit and placed his hand over it.8

5. Water springing out from his fingers

Narrated Anas bin Malik, I saw the Prophet when the 'Asr 9 prayer was due and the people

searched for water to perform ablution but they could not find it. Later on (a pot of) water for

ablution was brought to the Prophet who put his hand in that pot and ordered the people to

perform ablution from it. I saw the water springing out from underneath his fingers till all of

them performed the ablution.10

Anas said, "The Prophet asked for water and a tumbler with a broad base that was not so deep,

containing a small quantity of water, was brought to him whereby he put his fingers in it." Anas

further said, "I noticed the water springing out from amongst his fingers." Anas added, "I

estimated that the people who performed ablution with it numbered between seventy to eighty

 people."11

A bowl of water was brought to the Prophet while he was at Az-Zawra. He placed his hand in it

and the water started flowing among his fingers. All the people performed ablution (with that

water). Qatada asked Anas, "How many people were with you?" Anas replied, "Three hundred or

nearly three-hundred."12

Jabir bin 'Abdullah said, "The people became very thirsty on the day of Al-Hudaibiyah13. A small

pot containing some water was in front of the Prophet and when he had finished the ablution, the

people rushed towards him. He asked, 'What is wrong?' They replied, 'We have no water either

for performing ablution or for drinking except what is present in front of you.' So he placed his

hand in that pot and the water started flowing among his fingers like springs. We all drank and

performed ablution (from it). I asked Jabir, "How many were with you?" he replied, "Even if we

had been one-hundred-thousand, it would have been sufficient for us, but we were fifteen-

hundred."14

6. Water being filled into a dried up well

Narrated Al Bara bin Azib that they were in the company of the Prophet on the day of Al-

Hudaibiyah and their number was 1400 or more. They camped at a well and drew its water till it

was dried. When they informed the Prophet of this, he came and sat over its edge and said,

"Bring me a bucket of its water." When it was brought, he spat and invoked Allah and said,

"Leave it for a while." Then they quenched their thirst and watered their riding animals (from

that well) till they departed.15

Bukhari, vol.1, no.17011 Bukhari, vol.1, no.19912 Bukhari, vol.4, no.77213 A significant event in Islamic history, when the Prophet signed a peace treaty with the

pagans of Mecca to end hostilities. The Quran (48:1) describes this day by stating, “O

Prophet, Surely We have granted you a manifest victory in the shape of a Treaty concluded

at Hudaibiyah.” It should be noted that the terms of the treaty were in favour of the pagans.14 Bukhari, vol.4, no.77615 Bukhari, vol.5, no.472

7. His meal used to glorify God

Once we were with the Prophet on a journey when we ran short of water. He said, "Bring the

water remaining with you." The people brought a utensil containing a little water. He placed his

hand in it and said, "Come to the blessed water, and the Blessing is from Allah." I saw the water

flowing from among his fingers, and no doubt, we heard the meal glorifying Allah, when it was

 being eaten (by him).16

8. Increased the amount of dates

Narrated Jabir, when Abdullah bin Amr bin Haram died he was in debt. I asked the Prophet to

intercede with his creditors for some reduction in the debts. The Prophet requested them (to

reduce the debts) but they refused. The Prophet said to me, "Go and put your dates (in heaps)

according to their different kinds. The Ajwa17 on one side, the cluster of  Ibn Zaid 18 on another

and so on. Then call me." I did that and called the Prophet. He came and sat at the head or in the

middle of the heaps and ordered me: "Measure (the dates) for the creditors." I measured for themtill I paid all the debts. My dates remained as if nothing had been taken from them.19

9. Offered little milk which fed several people

Narrated Abu Huraira, “By Allah except Whom none has the right to be worshipped,

(sometimes) I used to lay (sleep) on the ground on my abdomen because of hunger, and

(sometimes) I used to bind a stone over my belly because of hunger. One day I sat by the way

from where they (the Prophet and his companions) used to come out. When Abu Bakr passed by,

I asked him about a Verse from Allah's Book 20 and I asked him only that he might satisfy my

hunger, but he passed by and did not do so. Then Umar passed by me and I asked him about a

Verse from Allah's Book, and I asked him only that he might satisfy my hunger, but he passed by

without doing so. Finally Abu-l-Qasim (the Prophet) passed by me and he smiled when he saw

me, for he knew what was in my heart and on my face. He said, "O Aba Hirr 21!" I replied,

"Labbaik 22, O Allah's Messenger!" He said to me, "Follow me." He went and I followed him.

Then he entered his house and I asked permission to enter and was admitted. He found milk in a

bowl and said, "From where is this milk?" His family informed him by saying, "It has been

presented to you by such-and-such man (or by such and such woman)." He said, "O Aba Hirr!" I

Aba Hirr is “father of the kitten” due to the fact that he was very fond of cats and was

usually found carrying them with him.22 Here I am or I respond to your call.

said, "Labbaik, O Allah's Apostle!" He said, "Go and call the people of  As-Suffa23 to me." These

people of  As-Suffa were the guests of Islam who had no families, no money, nor anybody to

depend upon, and whenever an object of charity was brought to the Prophet, he would send it to

them and would not take anything from it, and whenever any present was given to him, he used

to send some for it and take some of it for himself. The order of the Prophet upset me, and I said

to myself, "How will this little milk be enough for the people of  As-Suffa?" I thought I was more

entitled to drink from that milk in order to strengthen myself, but behold! The Prophet came to

order me to give that milk to them. I wondered what will remain of that milk for me, but anyway,

I could not but obey Allah and His Messenger so I went to the people of  As-Suffa and called

them, and they came and asked the Prophet's permission to enter. They were admitted and took

their seats in the house.

The Prophet said, "O Aba-Hirr!" I said, "Labbaik, O Allah's Messenger!" He said, "Take it and

give it to them." So I took the bowl (of milk) and started giving it to one man who would drink

his fill and return it to me, whereupon I would give it to another man who, in his turn, would

drink his fill and return it to me, and I would then offer it to another man who would drink his fill

and return it to me. Finally, after the whole group had drunk their fill, I reached the Prophet whotook the bowl and put it on his hand, looked at me and smiled and said. "O Aba Hirr!" I replied,

"Labbaik, O Allah's Messenger!" He said, "There remains only you and I." I said, "You have said

the truth, O Allah's Messenger!" He said, "Sit down and drink." I sat down and drank. He said,

"Drink," and I drank. He kept on telling me repeatedly to drink, till I said, "No. by Allah Who

sent you with the Truth, I have no space for it (in my stomach)." He said, "Hand it over to me."

When I gave him the bowl, he praised Allah and pronounced Allah's Name on it and drank the

remaining milk.24

10. Little food feeds many people

Abdur Rahman bin Abi Bakr said, "The As-Suffa were poor companions of the Prophet, so the

Prophet said, 'Whoever has food for two persons should take a third person to fed from them (i.e.

As-Suffa). And whosoever has food for four people he should take one or two from them.' Abu

Bakr took three men and the Prophet took ten of them to their respective homes."

… The narrator added: By Allah, whenever any one of us (myself and the guests of  As-Suffa)

took anything from the food, it increased from underneath. We all ate to our fill and the food was

more than it was before its serving.

Abu Bakr looked at the food and found it as it was before serving or even more than that. He

addressed his wife (saying) 'O the sister of Bani Firas! What is this?' She said, 'O the pleasure of

my eyes! The food is now three times more than it was before.' Abu Bakr ate from it … Then he

23 Companions of the Prophet who did not have any tribe or family to look after them and

they lived next to the Prophet’s mosque and were very poor. Most of them were very close

students of the Prophet and he would look after them.24 Bukhari, vol.8, no.459

again took a morsel (mouthful) from it and then took the rest of it to the Prophet. So that meal

was with the Prophet. There was a treaty between us and some people, and when the period of

that treaty had elapsed the Prophet divided us into twelve (groups) (the Prophet's companions),

each being headed by a man. Allah knows how many men were under the command of each

(leader). All of them (twelve groups of men) ate of that meal."25

Narrated Anas bin Malik, Abu Talha said to Um Sulaim, "I have noticed feebleness in the voice

of the Prophet which I think, is caused by hunger. Have you got any food?" She said, "Yes." She

brought out some loaves of barley and took out a veil belonging to her, and wrapped the bread in

part of it and put it under my arm and wrapped part of the veil round me and sent me to the

Prophet. I went carrying it and found the Prophet in the Mosque sitting with some people. When

I stood there, the Prophet asked, "Has Abu Talha sent you?" I said, "Yes." He asked, "With some

food? I said, "Yes." The Prophet then said to the men around him, "Get up!" He set out

(accompanied by them) and I went ahead of them till I reached Abu Talha and told him (of the

Prophet's visit). Abu Talha said, "O Um Sulaim! The Prophet is coming with the people and we

have no food to feed them." She said, "Allah and His Messenger know better." So Abu Talha

went out to receive the Prophet. The Prophet came along with Abu Talha and said, "O UmSulaim! Bring whatever you have." She brought the bread which the Prophet ordered to be

broken into pieces. Um Sulaim poured on them some butter from an oilskin. Then the Prophet

recited what Allah wished him to recite, and then said, "Let ten persons come in (to share the

meal)." Ten persons were admitted, ate their fill and went out. Then he again said, "Let another

ten do the same." They were admitted, ate their fill and went out. Then he again said, '"'Let

another ten persons (do the same.)" They were admitted, ate their fill and went out. Then he said,

"Let another ten persons come." In short, all of them ate until they were satisfied, and they were

seventy or eighty men.26

11. Knowledge of people’s hidden actions

“A man came to the Prophet asking for food so the Prophet sent a messenger to his wives (to

bring something for that man to eat) but they said that they had nothing except water. Then the

Prophet asked his companions, "Who will entertain him as a guest?" A companion replied, "I

will." So he took him to his wife and said to her, "Entertain generously the guest of the Prophet."

To this she replied, "We have got nothing except the meals of our children." He then told her,

"Prepare the meal, light your lamp and let your children sleep if they ask for supper." So she

prepared the meal, lit her lamp and made her children sleep, and then stood up pretending to

repair her lamp, which she then put out. Then both husband and wife pretended to eat in the dark,

while their guest ate their remaining food. In the morning the companion went to the Prophet

who told him, "Tonight Allah was pleased with your actions." Then Allah revealed: "But they

give preference over themselves even though they were in need of that. And whosoever is saved

from materialism such are they who will be successful.27"28

12. The Quran

This is the eternal miracle of the Prophet which will last until the Day of Judgement. Apart from

the many scientific miracles and facts that are mentioned in the Quran it also mentions many

prophecies as to what will occur on the Day of Judgement. It is the final divine book which

Allah has promised to protect from corruption until the Last Hour. This is the book which

removes doubts and uncertainties, and establishes one on the true path to loving God and

obeying His commands.

Prophecies1. First Muslim Naval Expedition

27 Quran (Surah al-Hashr) 59:928 Bukhari, vol.5, no.142

Page 11: Miracles and Prophecies

The Prophet went to the daughter of Milhan and reclined there (and slept) and then (woke up)

smiling. She asked, "O Allah's Messenger! What makes you smile?" He replied, (I dreamt that)

some people amongst my followers were sailing on the green sea in Allah's cause, resembling

kings on thrones." She said, "O Allah's Messenger! Invoke Allah to make me one of them." He

said, "O Allah! Let her be one of them." Then he (slept again and woke up and) smiled. She

asked him the same question and he gave the same reply. She said, "Invoke Allah to make me

one of them." He replied, 'You will be amongst the first group of them; you will not be amongst

the last." Later on she married Ubada bin As-Samit and then she sailed on the sea with Bint

Qaraza, Mu'awiya's wife (on a naval expedition).29 On her return, she mounted her riding animal,

which threw her down breaking her neck, she died as a result.30

2. The Conquest of Constantinople by Muslims

Narrated Khalid bin Madan that Umair bin Al-Aswad Al-Anasi told him that he went to Ubada

bin As-Samit while he was staying in his house at the sea-shore of Hims with (his wife) Um

Haram. Umair said, "Um Haram informed us that she heard the Prophet saying, 'Paradise is

granted to the first batch of my followers who will undertake a naval expedition.' Um Haramadded, "I said, 'O Allah's Messenger! Will I be amongst them?' He replied, 'You are amongst

them.' The Prophet then said, 'The first army amongst my followers who will invade Caesar's

City (Constantinople) will be forgiven their sins.' I asked, 'Will I be one of them, O Allah's

Messenger?' He replied in the negative."31

3. The Appearance of the People of Gog and Magog

Narrated Zainab bint Jahsh, the Prophet once came to her in a state of fear and said, "None has

the right to be worshipped but Allah. Woe unto the Arabs from a danger that has come near. An

opening has been made in the wall of Gog and Magog like this," making a circle with his thumb

and index finger. Zainab bint Jahsh said, "O Allah's Messenger! Shall we be destroyed even

though there are pious persons among us?" He said, "Yes, when the evil person will increase."32

4. Number of Muslims small compared to non-Muslims

29 This event took place many years after the death of the Prophet.30 Bukhari, vol.4, no.12931 Bukhari, vol.4, no.17532 Bukhari, vol.4, no.565

Page 12: Miracles and Prophecies

The Prophet said, "Allah will say (on the Day of Resurrection), 'O Adam.' Adam will reply,

'Labbaik 33 wa34 Sa'daik 35, and all the good is in Your Hand.' Allah will say: 'Bring out the people

of the Fire.' Adam will say: 'O Allah! How many are the people of the Fire?' Allah will reply:

'From every one thousand, take out nine-hundred-and ninety-nine.' At that time children will

become hoary headed, every pregnant female will have a miscarriage, and one will see mankind

as drunken, yet they will not be drunken, but dreadful will be the Wrath of Allah." The

companions of the Prophet asked, "O Allah's Messenger! Who is the person (who will be

saved)?" He said, "Rejoice with glad tidings; that person will be from you and one-thousand will

 be from Gog and Magog."

The Prophet further said, "By Him in Whose Hands my life is, hope that you will be one-fourth

of the people of Paradise." We shouted, "Allahu Akbar!36" He added, "I hope that you will be

one-third of the people of Paradise." We shouted, "Allahu Akbar!" He said, "I hope that you will

be half of the people of Paradise." We shouted, "Allahu Akbar!" He further said, "You

(Muslims) (compared with non-Muslims) are like a black hair in the skin of a white ox or like a

white hair in the skin of a black ox (i.e. your number is very small as compared with theirs)."37

5. Small Number of Muslims on the Right Path

The Prophet said, "Some of my followers will remain victorious (and on the right path) till the

Last Day comes, and they will still be victorious."38

I heard the Prophet saying, "A group of people amongst my followers will remain obedient to

Allah's orders and they will not be harmed by anyone who will not help them or who will oppose

them, till Allah's Order (the Last Day) comes upon them while they are still on the right path."39

6. People will compete in building tall buildings

Then he further asked, "When will the Hour be established?" Allah's Messenger replied, "The

answerer has no better knowledge than the questioner. But I will inform you about its portents.

1. When a slave (lady) gives birth to her master.

2. When the shepherds of black camels start boasting and competing with others in the

construction of higher buildings.

And the Hour is one of five things which nobody knows except Allah. The Prophet then recited:

7. The Coming of the Al-Masih Ad-Dajjal42

The Prophet said, "The terror caused by Al-Masih Ad-Dajjal will not enter Medina and at that

time Medina will have seven gates and there will be two angels at each gate guarding them."43

Allah's Messenger said, "There are angels guarding the entrances (or roads) of Medina, neither

plague nor  Ad-Dajjal will be able to enter it."44

The Prophet said, "There will be no town which Ad-Dajjal will not enter except Mecca and

Medina, and there will be no entrance (road) (of both Mecca and Medina) but the angels will be

standing in rows guarding it against him, and then Medina will shake with its inhabitants thrice

(i.e. three earthquakes will take place) and Allah will expel all the non-believers and the

hypocrites from it."45

Narrated Abu Said Al Khudri Allah's Messenger told us a long narrative about  Ad-Dajjal , and

among the many things he mentioned, was his saying, " Ad-Dajjal will come and it will beforbidden for him to pass through the entrances of Medina. He will land in some of the salty

barren areas (outside) Medina; on that day the best man or one of the best men will come up to

him and say, 'I testify that you are the same Dajjal whose description was given to us by Allah's

Messenger .' Ad-Dajjal will say to the people, 'If I kill this man and bring him back to life again,

will you doubt my claim?' They will say, 'No.' Then Ad-Dajjal will kill that man and bring him

back to life. That man will say, 'Now I know your reality better than before.'  Ad-Dajjal will say,

'I want to kill him but I cannot.' "46

8. The disbelief of the Prophet’s Uncle

Narrated Ibn Abbas when the Verse: "And warn your close relatives"47 was revealed, Allah's

Messenger went out, and when he had ascended As-Safa mountain48, he shouted, "Ya

Sabahah!"49 The people asked, "Who is that?" "Then they gathered around him, then he said, " If

I inform you that an army is proceeding up the side of this mountain, will you believe me?" They

said, "We have never heard you telling a lie." Then he said, "I am a plain-warner to you of a

severe punishment." Abu Lahab (the Prophet’s uncle) said, "May you perish! You gathered us

only for this reason?" Then Abu Lahab went away. So the Surah: "Perish the hands of Abu

Lahab!50"51 was revealed.52

9. Animals will talk to humans before the Last Hour

Narrated Abu Huraira I heard Allah's Messenger saying, "While a shepherd was amongst his

sheep, a wolf attacked them and took away one sheep. When the shepherd chased the wolf, the

wolf turned towards him and said, 'Who will be its guard on the day of wild animals when

nobody except I will be its shepherd.' And while a man was driving a cow with a load on it, it

turned towards him and spoke to him saying, 'I have not been created for this purpose, but for

ploughing.'" The people said, "Glorified be Allah." The Prophet said, "But I believe in it and so

does Abu Bakr and 'Umar."53

10. Abu Bakr then Umar will lead the Muslims after the death of the Prophet

Narrated Abu Huraira I heard Allah's Messenger saying, "While I was sleeping, I saw myself

standing at a well, on it there was a bucket. I drew water from the well as much as Allah wished. Then Ibn Abi Quhafa (i.e. Abu Bakr) took the bucket from me and brought out one or two

buckets (of water) and there was weakness in his drawing the water. May Allah forgive his

weakness for him. Then the bucket turned into a very big one and Ibn Al-Khattab took it over

and I had never seen such a mighty person amongst the people as him in performing such hard

work, till the people drank to their satisfaction and watered their camels that knelt down there."54

11.The Caliphs after the Prophet

Narrated Abu Musa Al Ashari I performed ablution in my house and then went out and said,

"Today I shall stick to Allah's Messenger and stay with him all day in his service." I went to the

mosque and asked about the Prophet. They said, "He had gone." So I followed the direction he

had gone, asking about him till he entered a place called Bir Aris. I sat at its gate that was made

of date-palm leaves till the Prophet finished answering the call of nature and performed ablution.

Then I went up to him to see him sitting at the well of Aris at the middle of its edge with his legs

uncovered, hanging in the well. I greeted him and went back and sat at the gate. I said, "Today I

will be the gatekeeper of the Prophet." Abu Bakr came and pushed the gate. I asked, "Who is it?"

He said, "Abu Bakr." I told him to wait, went in and said, "O Allah's Messenger! Abu Bakr asks

for permission to enter." He said, "Admit him and give him the glad tidings that he will be in

50 These verses of the Quran clearly stated that Abu Lahab was going to die in disbelief. In

fact, these verses were revealed eight years before his death and at no time did Abu Lahab

profess faith.51 Quran (Surah Lahab) 111:152 Bukhari, vol.6, no.49553 Bukhari, vol.5, no.1554 Bukhari, vol.5, no.16

Paradise."55 So I went out and said to Abu Bakr, "Come in, and Allah's Messenger gives you the

glad tidings that you will be in Paradise." Abu Bakr entered and sat on the right side of Allah's

Messenger on the edge of the well and hung his legs in the well as the Prophet did and uncovered

his legs. I then returned and sat (at the gate). I had left my brother performing ablution and he

intended to follow me. So I said (to myself). "If Allah wants good for my brother He will bring

him here." Suddenly somebody moved the door. I asked, "Who is it?" He said, "'Umar bin Al-

Khattab." I asked him to wait, went to Allah's Messenger greeted him and said, 'Umar bin Al-

Khattab asks the permission to enter." He said, "Admit him, and give him the glad tidings that he

will be in Paradise."56 I went to "Umar and said "Come in, and Allah's Messenger, gives you the

glad tidings that you will be in Paradise." So he entered and sat beside Allah's Messenger on the

edge of the well on the left side and hung his legs in the well. I returned and sat (at the gate) and

said, (to myself), "If Allah wants good for so-and-so, He will bring him here." Somebody came

and moved the door. I asked "Who is it?" He replied, "Uthman bin Affan." I asked him to wait

and went to the Prophet and informed him. He said, "Admit him, and give him the glad tidings of

entering Paradise after a calamity that will befall him."57 So I went up to him and said to him,

"Come in; Allah's Messenger gives you the glad tidings of entering Paradise after a calamity that

will befall you." 'Uthman then came in and found that the edge of the well was occupied, so hesat opposite to the Prophet on the other side. Said bin Al-Musaiyab said, "I interpret this

(narration) in terms of their graves58."59

12. How Umar and Uthman would die?

The Prophet once climbed the mountain of Uhud with Abu Bakr, 'Umar and 'Uthman. The

mountain shook with them. The Prophet said (to the mountain), "Be firm, O Uhud! For on you

there are no more than a Prophet, a Siddiq60 and two martyrs61."62

13. The Death of Umaiya bin Khalaf

55 Abu Bakr was the first caliph after the Prophet’s death.56 Umar was the second caliph after Abu Bakr.57 Uthman was the third caliph after Umar and he was assassinated by rebels after a civil

strife in Madinah.58

Abu Bakr and Umar are buried on either side of the Prophet while Uthman was buried in acemetery some distance away from them.59 Bukhari, vol.5, no.2360 One who always says the truth61 Umar was murdered by a disgruntle Zoroastrian slave who disagreed with Umar’s verdict

in a civil dispute whereas Uthman was assassinated by rebels who disagreed with some of

Uthman’s administrative decisions. Like the previous tradition (no.11) it shows the prophesy

of the succession of caliphs after the Prophet i.e. Abu Bakr then Umar and then Uthman.62 Bukhari, vol.5, no.24

Sad bin Mu'adh was a close friend of Umaiya bin Khalaf 63 and whenever Umaiya passed through

Medinah, he used to stay with Sad, and whenever Sad went to Mecca, he used to stay with

Umaiya. When Allah's Messenger arrived at Medina, Sa'd went to perform Umrah64 and stayed

at Umaiya's home in Mecca. He said to Umaiya, "Tell me of a time when (the mosque) is empty

so that I may be able to perform Tawa f 65 around the Ka'bah66." So Umaiya went with him about

midday. Abu Jahl met them and said, "O Abu Safwan!67 Who is this man accompanying you?"

He said, "He is Sa’d." Abu Jahl addressed Sa’d saying, "I see you wandering about safely in

Mecca in spite of the fact that you have given shelter to the people who have changed their

religion (i.e. the Muslims) and have claimed that you will help them and support them. By Allah,

if you were not in the company of Abu Safwan, you would not be able to go back to your family

safely." Sa’d, raising his voice, said to him, "By Allah, if you should stop me from doing this

(i.e. performing Tawaf) I would certainly prevent you from something which is more valuable

for you68, that is, your passage through Medinah." On this, Umaiya said to him, "O Sa’d, do not

raise your voice before Abu-l-Hakam69, the chief of the people of the Valley (of Mecca)." Sa’d

said, "O Umaiya, stop that! By Allah, I have heard Allah's Messenger predicting that the

Muslims will kill you." Umaiya asked, "In Mecca?" Sa’d said, "I do not know." Umaiya was

greatly distressed by that news.

When Umaiya returned to his family, he said to his wife, "O Um Safwan! Do you know what

Sa’d told me?" She said, "What has he told you?" He replied, "He claims that Muhammad has

informed them that they will kill me. I asked him, 'In Mecca?' He replied, 'I do not know." Then

Umaiya added, "By Allah, I will never go out of Mecca." But when the day of (the Battle of)

Badr 70 came, Abu Jahl called the people to war saying, "Go and protect your caravan." But

Umaiya disliked going out (of Mecca). Abu Jahl came to him and said, "O Abu Safwan! If the

people see you staying behind though you are the chief of the people of the Valley, then they will

remain behind with you." Abu Jahl kept on urging him to go until he (i.e. Umaiya) said, "As you

have forced me to change my mind, by Allah, I will buy the best camel in Mecca. Then Umaiya

said (to his wife). "O Um Safwan, prepare what I need (for the journey)." She said to him, "O

Abu Safwan! Have you forgotten what your brother (i.e. Sa’d) told you?" He said, "No, but I do

not want to go with them but for a short distance." So when Umaiya went out, he used to tie his

camel wherever he camped. He kept on doing that till Allah Caused him to be killed at Badr.71

14. Al-Hassan will cause two groups of Muslims to make peace

Narrated Abu Bakra I heard the Prophet talking at the pulpit while Al-Hasan72 was sitting beside

him, the Prophet said, "This son of mine is a Sayyid (i.e. chief) and perhaps Allah will bring

about an agreement between two groups of Muslims through him73."74

15. Some Arabs will again become pagans

Allah's Messenger said, "The Hour will not be established till the buttocks of the women of the

tribe of Daus move while going round Dhi-al-Khalasa." Dhi-al-Khalasa was the idol of the Daus

tribe which they used to worship in the pre-Islamic period of ignorance.75

16. A fire in Arabia

Allah's Messenger said, "The Hour will not be established till a fire will come out of the land of Hijaz76, and it will throw light on the necks of the camels at Busra 77."78

17. The Euphrates will disclose treasure

Allah's Messenger said, "Soon the river 'Euphrates' will disclose the treasure (the mountain) of

gold, so whoever will be present at that time should not take anything of it." Al-A'raj narrated

from Abu Huraira that the Prophet said the same but he said, "It (Euphrates) will uncover a

mountain of gold (under it)."79

18. Difficulty in finding people to give charity to

Narrated Haritha bin Wahb I heard Allah's Messenger saying, "Give in charity because there will

come a time on the people when a person will go out with his alms from place to place but will

not find anybody to accept it."80

72 The grandson of the Prophet73 After the death of his father Ali the forth caliph after the Prophet, the people wanted Al-

Hasan to be caliph but because it would have caused civil war between his supporters and

those of Muawiyah who was also wanting to be caliph, he chose to abdicate in favour of Muawiyah to avoid bloodshed.74 Bukhari, vol.5, no.8975 Bukhari, vol.9, no.23276 The area of Mecca and Madinah77 The area of southern Iraq78 Bukhari, vol.9, no.23479 Bukhari, vol.9, no.23580 Bukhari, vol.9, no.236
