Loess drifts and meanders between two textures for most of the piece; a legato, canonic texturepredominates, interspersed with restless, agitated sections. The drama of the work is in the subtletransitions between these environments. The work ends with a new texture, blunt and dull.

SaxophoneQuarter-tones are used throughout, indicated as follows: = 1/4 sharp = 3/4 sharp

During long passages with no rests, breath as comfortable.

DedicationLoess was commissioned by Philipp Stäudlin for a performance with Yoko Hagino. The first performanceis scheduled for February 8th, 2015, in Boston.
