2. Definition: Mise En Scene A French term meaning what is in the scene. Essentially it is information in front of the camera forthe audience to help them to work out what is goingon It is made up of 5 elements: Can you guess what theyare based on the previous image? 3. The 5 Elements of Mise en Scene Settings & Props Costume, Hair & Make UpEach aspect of mise-en-scenewithin a film and sendssignals to the audienceabout how we are supposedto feel at a certain point Facial Expressions & Body Language Lighting & Colourhas hidden meanings Positioning of characters/objects within the frame 4. Settings& PropsSettings & Locations are notjust backgrounds and play animportant part in film-making.They can be very important interms of establishing genre.Settings can manipulate anaudience by building certainexpectations and then taking adifferent turn Where would you expectthe following to be setand what props youwould find in:1. A Science Fiction Film2. A Romantic Comedy3. A Horror Film 5. Sci-FiRom-ComHorror 6. On another piece of paper: Pick agenre of your own and think of atypical scene. Costume, Hair & Make Up Costume, Hair & Make Up act as an instant indicator to us of acharacters personality, status & job. It tells us immediately whether the film is set in the present andwhat society/or culture it will centre around Certain costumes can signify certain individuals (i.e. the blackcloak of a vampire, A cowboys Stetson or James Bonds tuxedo) What does the costume, hair and make-up tell the audience in thefollowing image? 8. On your other piece of paper chosesome costumes you would expectto see in your chosen genre. Whatwould the hair be like and whatwould the make up be like?Fold this part over again and pass tothe person on your right. 9. Facial Expressions& Body Language Facial Expressions provide aclear indicator of howsomeone is feeling. If someone is smiling broadly,we assume they are happy butwe may get a different feelingif this is accompanied by scarymusic Body Language may alsoindicate how a character feelstowards another character ormay reflect the state of theirrelationship TASK: Whatmeanings/emotions do thefollowing images convey: 10.
