Mishiko is an international team based in Europe, Russia, and Asia, working on a range of innovative products utilizing the company’s Internet of Things (IoT) platform.

Business ChallengeAnalyst firm IHS forecasts that the IoT market will grow to an installed base of 30.7 billion devices in 2020 and 75.4 billion in 2025. While many of today’s companies have expressed a requirement for IoT capabilities to improve their business model, the complexity of implementing IoT solutions has hindered forward progress. The sheer magnitude of existing protocols and standards across different devices makes connecting legacy systems and introducing next mobile devices a project that crosses the boundaries of IT and OT.

Mishiko is addressing this complexity by developing a universal IoT Development Kit, Mishiko DevKit, to launch its own in-house projects, as well as to provide as a starter solution for third-party IoT developers focused on wearables and other IoT applications. The Mishiko DevKit is a system-on-chip (SoC) solution integrating hardware and software into an application-ready platform. This allows third-party developers to launch a project without heavy upfront R&D time and expenses, lowering CAPEX and speeding time-to-market.

“We provide a full-stack hardware and software solution, which only requires basic adaptation for the specific needs of the product you want to create and problems you want to solve with it,“ explained Anton Bliznyuk, marketing director at Mishiko. “The DevKit makes the launch of new projects much cheaper and faster for the pioneers in the IoT space.”

The biggest challenge in the wearables market is also the smallest – product, that is. Size matters when it comes to wearables, and Mishiko needed to incorporate as much functionality as possible onto the smallest board possible. To create a truly universal IoT starter solution, a variety of connectivity is required, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS and cellular in an all-in-one form factor.

AIRPRIME® HL SERIES EMBEDDED MODULES

Mishiko selected the Sierra Wireless AirPrime® HL Series Wireless Internet of Things (IoT) Modules to achieve both modem and GPS functionality in a single unit.“The Sierra Wireless modules are compact in size and provide a high level of integration, as well as a good built-in GNSS solution,” said Bliznyuk. “The local first-line support provided and mature firmware management offering also make the modules a good fit for what we are trying to provide with our DevKit.”

Mishiko chose the Sierra Wireless HL Series module that provides global 3G coverage and 2G fallback when 3G networks are unavailable. The combined cellular connectivity and GPS location services in this module expand the application potential for Mishiko DevKit users. In addition, Sierra Wireless’ AirVantage® FOTA Edition offers the added security and operational benefit of free unlimited firmware-over-the-air updates to keep devices of all shapes and sizes optimized on the mobile network and updated with the latest security patches.

“We have a very small-sized main logic board thanks to Sierra Wireless and other innovative electronic suppliers, but we also provide wide functionality with such a small size,” said Bliznyuk. “This includes support of the main wireless data transfer protocols, as well as worldwide data roaming for a hassle-free launch of new IoT products into new markets.”

SIERRA WIRELESS SMART SIM

Each Mishiko device is equipped with a Sierra Wireless SIM card. The “Smart SIM” enables access to most operators in a given location, anywhere in the world, and uses a patented smart network steering technology to connect dynamically to the best carrier network when a data-service failure is detected. What’s more, the Smart SIM’s electronic profile can be defined according to customer preference. With the Smart SIM, Mishiko uses just one SIM for every deployment, regardless of operating region, and that simplifies inventory management. Also, since Mishiko only deals with Sierra Wireless for connectivity, the company doesn’t have to spend time negotiating and managing multiple carrier agreements or integrating with multiple SIM management platforms.

ResultsAnalyst firm CCS Insight has predicted that 411 million smart wearable devices, worth a staggering $34 billion, will be sold in 2020. Those devices will range from simple smart watches, to healthcare applications such as fitness trackers and medical alerts, to location devices for family members.

Mishiko’s first implementation using the company’s IoT DevKit is also its first consumer product, Mishiko Collar. This small-sized pet tracker is one of the most advanced GPS and activity tracking devices for dogs on the market. It combines two devices in one, allowing fitness and location tracking. Mishiko Collar works in 170 countries around the world and has worldwide data roaming for a fixed monthly fee. And it works directly out of the box thanks to the SIM-chip on-board solution. All these features make Mishiko Collar a premium-level product with completely unique integrated features.

“There is a lack of all-in-one solutions to address the needs of third-party IoT developers,” said Bliznyuk. “We see an opportunity for the Mishiko platform to become a completely universal solution for quickly growing the IoT applications market.”
