Those of us who have lived abroad, survived physically and psychologically, by creating ‘Jamaica’ within our host culture and sustained ourselves that way, often under unfamiliar and extreme weather conditions. In some cases, the denial of due opportunity created hardship but we are fighters, who draw special strength from our culture and style of entertainment.

Musical Entertainment started with the few records that we brought from home in our suitcases; growing from house parties, to clubs, to concerts. Many of our artists visited: Miss Lou, Jimmy Cliff, Peter Tosh, Bob Marley, mixed with those who also migrated and became a part of the Reggae music circle. Bob Marley and I would drive from Manhattan to a Jamaican dance at Farmers Boulevard in Queens. We spent the entire journey trying to unravel the mystery of Aston “Family Man” Bar-rett’s bass lines. One night Bob Marley and I went off on a ‘one block’ sprint race in the Bronx. Bob was an avid football player and in shape, so I was conscious that he

would probably pass me in a longer race, so while I was still two steps ahead I called the race, “Williams first, Marley second” only to hear a voice at my elbow “Marley second you B*********”. Anyone who knew Bob Marley would be aware that such a dispute was not so easily settled, but when the quarrel was over, about who won the race (I did) it was back to music…always back to music.

Through radio, WLIB especially, WNWK, WVIP ,WBLS the music of Marley, Cliff, Toots, Johnny Nash, Marcia Griffiths, Bob Andy, John Holt, Desmond Dekker, Third World, Inner Circle, and so many others, Rockers TV with Earl Chin, coupled with Chris Blackwell’s marketing machinery, we created our own Jamaican world of music in America. While Bob Marley was be-coming an international sensation, Jamaican music morphed into an industry unto itself, outside our boarders, with millions of Reggae music dollars, beginning to circulate in the general market. The late Danny Simms played a special role.

At times, I was tempted to resent this commercial development but came to recognize it as a much wider opportunity for Jamaican artists as well. I am told upon my return to Jamaica that 50% to 80% of dues collected by music societies here are repatriated to other countries. HOT102 FM is committed to helping some of our young talented artists and groups to go through existing channels into this wider world of music and claim a share of these dividends, the legacy of their predecessors. I often do radio interviews with the sons and daughters of many pioneers - a surreal experience.

Now to the Pageant… The Miss Jamaica Nation Beauty Pageant is in a sense, a continuation of the Miss Jamaica US(A).The Miss Jamaica USA was started and operated by the Jamaica Progressive League in New York for 17 years. When we took it over, the name was adjusted to the Miss Jamaica US Beauty Pageant. We decided not to challenge the “A”, which was owned by the Miss Universe - (Donald Trump) Organization. We chose to highlight our Parishes, Towns and Districts, supported annually by Caribbean/American businesses We too, proudly cheered the accomplishments of our Jamaican participants in world pageants, former Miss Worlds Hon. Lisa Hannah, Cindy Breakspeare, and before them Carol Joan Crawford. There are many who also distinguish themselves in the Miss Universe and other competitions. A gentleman who knows, tells the story that once certain countries have selected a contestant for a world pageant, they also have a team of plastic surgeons ready to go to work on creating the ‘perfect woman’. We brought The Miss Jamaica Nation not in competition or rivalry of any other, but rather to compliment. We believe that the perfect candidate is already created by the Supreme. Our task is to help these individuals to embrace their self esteem and other natural attributes; to glow from the outside and within.We want the experience to be a happy useful and memorable one.

emony, I cannot help but reflect on the path taken to get here. Only a truly confident and dedicated team could have achieved the success we have and I am truly grateful to have been a part of it. We all have developed a new and refreshed appreciation for the phrase, “time flies when you are having fun!”

The Pageant has been both a wondrous opportunity and a learning experience. Thirteen beautiful and intelligent ladies have entered on this journey together, all aspiring to become Miss Jamaica Nation 2014. Orientation, countless training ses-sions, radio interviews and other various activities have built strong friendships to last a lifetime. In just a matter of weeks, I have seen bonds form between these young ladies and know that my job as a coordinator has been done. It has been my pleasure to have worked with each and every one of you. Thank you and best wishes to you all!
