Alzheimer’s Disease Basics

Alzheimer’s (AHLZ-high-merz) disease destroys brain cells and affects a person's memory, ability to learn, make judgments, communicate, and carry out basic daily activities.

Alzheimer’s is not normal aging. It is a progressive, fatal disease and has no cure.

Research Funding• Since 1982, the Alzheimer’s Association, the world’s largest nonprofit funder of Alzheimer’s disease research, has committed more than $292 million to more than 2,000 best-of-field grant proposals.

• The 2011 Alzheimer’s Association International Research Grant Program awarded more than $12.8 million in research funding to 78 investigators from 8 countries.
