God had sent them to accomplish. You find MAF in the weirdest places – which is a good thing! It allows us to serve alongside more than 1,500 partner organizations, enabling them to reach these isolated places with greater speed and safety, multiplying the effectiveness of their resources and work. The work done by organizations such as World Vision, UK Aid, HALO Trust and Samaritan’s Purse is supported and facilitated by MAF flights and infrastructure. The pages of this edition of Flying for Life are full of these connections: from working with the Papua New Guinea Defence Force to deliver food to areas where their aircraft are simply too large to land, to flying children with special needs in rural Mongolia to Reaching the Light ministries where they will receive life-changing physiotherapy, and delivering eye surgeons to remote areas of war-torn South Sudan. MAF is there, working to see these people receive the love and care of God in tangible ways. You may remember the parable of the Good Samaritan Jesus shared in Luke 10:25-37. Finding a man beaten and robbed by the side of the road, the Good Samaritan didn’t hesitate to help. At the end of this parable Jesus says to those listening to “Go and do likewise”. Sometimes our calling will bring us to the front lines where recognition is abundant, and sometimes we will be actively working where others may not as readily see us. The important thing is that we are following God’s direction, working together to accomplish the work He has set out for us to do. Thank you for joining with us to accomplish His work!

So many people with specialized and varied skill sets are needed to keep
MAF flying safely and effectively, and on a course to accomplishing our mission of sharing God’s love through aviation and technology. From managers to teachers to office staff to engineers. It takes everyone’s attention to detail and God’s provision and protection to see our planes land and take off safely every day. Our Aircraft Maintenance Engineers (AMEs), are constantly at work in the hangar and beyond, ensuring that our planes are in top working order, that inspections are carried out and that problems are found on the ground and not in the air. Teachers are another vital part of our staff as they impact Missionary Kids and local children in the classroom, (and outside as well!), on a daily basis. Their service allows families to serve in areas in desperate need without worrying about their children receiving a proper education. There is also our IT staff who work diligently to maintain and develop internet and communication infrastructure that is so vital to MAF’s work in remote areas where such infrastructure does not always already exist. You will see evidence from our Annual Report overview on page 6 that there is another significant part of our team enabling MAF to carry out lifesaving flights each day. Each one of you, our supporters, who have joined MAF through the giving of your finances and prayers, plays a significant role in seeing our mission accomplished with every flight! Since starting with MAF I have been amazed at the number of people I have met who have an MAF story. Not because they have worked for MAF, but because they have been involved with an agency that MAF has supported. Whether it was a flight to get them to and from the field, or a life-saving medevac or supply drop, MAF was there to help in the work

Even today, 19 years after the last drought, ‘the rainforest,’ says Flight
Operations Manager Michael Duncalfe, ‘has a haze of grey-brown from the skeletons of thousands of dead trees.’ In PNG, roughly 85% of the population is involved in agricultural production – the country producing nearly all its own food. Many of the farmers live in isolated areas served by MAF. Sadly, PNG is one of several countries suffering from droughts caused by the El Niño weather phenomenon. Warnings of an impending crisis that would affect an estimated two million people occurred in August 2015, when drought and frost decimated the sweet potato crop in the food growing highland areas. PNG’s people, who weren’t prepared for this, are afraid there could be a famine even worse than that caused by the drought of 1997. Once again, crop failure, school closures due to water supplies running dry, and outbreaks
of diarrhea, malaria and typhoid are widespread.
DesperationThe UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs says, ‘As many as 4.7 million people in 11 Pacific countries (2.4 million of them in PNG) are at risk of water shortages, food insecurity and disease. It is anticipated that the current situation will become devastating if the drought continues.’ ‘With so little rain falling over the western part of the country,’ writes PNG Communications Officer Glen Sim, ‘people in remote areas became increasingly desperate for food and water. The Member of Parliament for Telefomin appealed directly to the National Disaster Relief Office.’ ‘The result,’ says Michael Duncalfe, ‘is that the MP arranged for food to be flown to Tabubil, from where MAF distributed it to local communities.
‘The first load of relief food, which our staff in Mount Hagen helped load on to the PNG Defence Force aircraft, was flown out and relief flights continued right up until Christmas.’ By early November, the Defence Force’s Mini-Hercules aircraft had flown 9 loads amounting to 27.5 tonnes of rice and tinned fish out of MAF’s base in Mount Hagen into Tabubil, the launching strip for our distribution program.
God’s goodnessThrough the goodness of God and the large cargo carrying capacity of our
Twin Otter aircraft, we’ve already flown emergency food supplies to Sisamin, Edwaki, Oksapmin, Bak and Fiyakin.MAF Pilot Richie Axon recalls, ‘All the people who came to watch the food being unloaded were so excited, and
nearly the whole community arrived to watch at Sisamin.’ The distribution of food aid was carefully controlled. Each receiving family was listed and instructions given to the waiting crowd to ensure fair distribution. ‘Unfortunately,’ says Glen, ‘at some of the other centres, greed and desperation caused fights among those waiting for food, resulting in many being slashed with bush knives.’ Michael concurs. ‘When rice was distributed at one community in the Eastern Highlands, some local people
took all the supplies for themselves. Neighbouring villages were left with nothing.’ He gives thanks that similar problems didn’t occur in the Telefomin/Tabubil region.
Once again, crop failure, school closures due to water supplies running dry, and outbreaks of diarrhea, malaria and typhoid are widespread.
At last, food has comeDistribution is not, however, easy. Michael says when villagers take advantage of dry weather spells to burn vegetation and clear the land around their communities, the thick, lingering smoke makes it impossible for our pilots to land. But, in January, flight became possible again. An MAF Twin Otter aircraft departed Mount Hagen Airport with 880kg of food, on a long day’s flying schedule to Tifalmin, Telefomin, Tari and Tekin. ‘At last, food has come’ is a phrase pilots are getting used to hearing. Please pray for those facing hunger on a frightening scale. Pray that our aircraft won’t have any problems taking off or landing, that remote communities can start growing crops again, and that food will reach drought-stricken areas struggling to survive. Pray that the PNG government will provide effective relief to the worst hit areas of the country, and that those who need food most will receive it without incident. Finally, if you have the means, please consider a special PNG famine gift today that will help provide the flights needed to deliver emergency food.
In 1997, drought and frost caused hundreds of deaths throughout Papua New Guinea (PNG). Today, an even worse crisis threatens.

News in brief
It was February 23, 1946, when MAF pilot Betty Greene embarked on the first MAF flight, taking off from Los Angeles,
California, with Mexico City as the final destination. Flying a red 1933 four-place Waco cabin bi-plane, Betty began the flight with two passengers, Wycliffe workers Ethel Lambotte and Lois Schneider. 'On the morning of our departure, a group of friends gathered for prayer and to wish us well. After taxiing to the east end of the dirt strip, I swung the plane around for take-off.' The very first MAF flight was underway! 'As I pushed the throttle forwards, dust whipped up in a cloud behind us,' she continued. 'I climbed westward and circled back over the group of friends who waved to us as I dipped the wing in salute.' Betty was 25 years old when she took to the skies for MAF’s inaugural flight. She began her professional aviation career by serving with the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASPs) during World War II. She flew several kinds of military planes during the war and did experimental work on high-altitude flights. After the war, Betty helped found the Christian Airmen's Missionary Fellowship, later called Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF).
MAF Celebrates the 70th Anniversary of Our First Flight!
On February 11, MAF Pilot Remi van Wermeskerken began what he
thought would be a routine day. His GA8 Airvan was booked to fly school supplies and teachers to the village of Nankina in the Finisterre Mountains. "The school master, Edwin, keeps telling us what a blessing it is to have a plane in Madang again." writes Remi. There are no roads anywhere in this part of Papua New Guinea, so the village and school depend on the MAF plane to get their teachers and supplies to the village. After Remi landed and was unloading the school supplies and passengers, he noticed several men carrying a young woman on a homemade stretcher. Her name was Lona Isikel, a grade-6 student who lived in a small village a further 10 kilometers away called Gwarawan. Every day Lona would walk 15 kilometers down a mountain to fetch drinking water for her village, which she would carry back in bamboo containers
Remi and Tjandra van Wermeskerken moved to Madang just before the end of 2015. After seven years with no permanent pilot based there, Remi is now able to serve the isolated communities within the Finisterre Mountain area with his MAF Airvan, which has already been a blessing to many people and communities.

MAF Canada’s contribution to global ministry impactMAF’s holistic approach to ministry focuses on meeting people’s physical felt-needs, as well as their spiritual needs. MAF airplanes can make a vital difference and prolong life for those who still need to hear the Gospel, but they only tell half the story. The real story is told through the dedication, sacrifice, and commitment of the men, women, and families who serve. MAF Canada’s primary contribution to this global work is found in our people. Canadians serving with MAF fill critical and key roles as pilots, aircraft mechanics, teachers, and business administrators in 17 countries around the world - more than any other supporting country in MAF’s global family.
Betty served with MAF as a pilot for 16 years, flying in 12 countries and touching down in some 20 more. In 1962 she began working at MAF headquarters, and later served as an MAF advocate until her death in 1997.
An MAF flight provides hope and healing to an isolated young girl
slung to her back. Four months earlier, she slipped and broke her leg. Since her village had no money for travel or medical help, Lona had to endure enormous pain and suffering. When Edwin heard what happened to this girl, he sent word to her village to have her brought to Nankina where he knew Remi and his airplane would be arriving. "Finally she was able to get to the coastal city of Madang where they have a hospital, and hopefully doctors will be able to fix her leg so she can walk again without pain. It was just another reminder to me of why we are here, serving these remote people, helping them to get the care they need," writes Remi. "Thank you for being a part of this ministry!"

Chris walked through the door and I could immediately tell his day had
been far from easy. It was evident as he dropped his bag, kicked off his shoes, and slumped into the closest chair at the kitchen table. But most clearly, you could see the struggle of the day in eyes. “What happened?” I wanted to know. Chris shared the news. “There was a fire, a tukol fire in Kajo Keji. A man in the village set a family’s home on fire in the middle of the night. The two boys lost their mother in the blaze.” Tukols are commonplace in South Sudan, they are huts made of mud and straw and they serve as the traditional house for many here. I sat still for a moment, picturing the children’s home burning to the ground in a remote village of South Sudan. The thoughts began to race in my head. Who would do such a thing? Are the children alright? Do they have someone to care for them? Before I could ask, Chris continued. “The two little kids are badly burned.
They could hardly sit in the airplane, arms and legs extended straight out, they just stayed as still as could be. They didn’t even lean back on the seat, it would probably have hurt too much.” Chris grimaced.
It was a hard story to listen to, never mind actually experience. Charles, one of MAF South Sudan’s booking officers,
told me that that the children’s mother was taken to hospital in Kajo Keji but she didn’t survive. The children were also admitted to this remote hospital, but needed to be medically evacuated to Juba for further treatment. Alkheer is 7 years old, Alfathi is only 5. Chris said the children looked scared as they climbed the steps of the plane. Rightly so, their home had just burned down, they’d lost their mother, half their bodies were covered in severe burns and now they were about to fly in an airplane with a caregiver to Juba. Once they got to Juba, a vehicle was supposed to be waiting to take them directly to the hospital. But there was no car in sight and when Chris realized the vehicle wouldn’t be coming, he asked David Juma, one of the guys on MAF’s dispatch team, to drive the children to the hospital in the MAF van. After hearing all this, my heart was broken. In a country wrought with so much pain and conflict already, young Alkheer and Alfathi had now suffered

yet another horrible tragedy. By the next Saturday I was still thinking about the kids, so Chris and I got a babysitter for our own two little ones, and headed out to the hospital, unsure if we would even be able to find them, let alone help. We stopped in at the administration building, told the staff who we were looking for and one of the nurses kindly led us to the right ward. As we stepped into the simple hospital room, metal beds and saggy mosquito nets lined the walls, a handful of children who had been badly burned filled the small ward. But the first thing that caught my attention was an Abuba (Arabic for “grandma”) hovering over a small child. It was a beautiful sight, an elderly lady with eyes closed and hands raised, praying aloud in Arabic. The nurse nodded at the same small child on the bed, fast asleep as the granny prayed. The nurse said “He’s the one.” The burns were horrible, the little boy’s entire head was burned and part of
his face, as were his two arms and one of his legs. We waited for the prayers to be finished and then said hello. With tears in her eyes, the Abuba introduced herself as Jeselen, the maternal grandmother. “The children’s mom was my…”, she could hardly utter the words as she mourned the loss of her own daughter. Jeselen shared that the older brother Alkheer was healing well and had already been released from hospital. Alfathi, the young boy asleep in front of us, was also improving. He could talk and eat and even walk around some. Nabil, the children’s father was also there. There was a sad mix of sorrow and hardness on his face. We were able to purchase some medicine and burn cream for Alfathi, as well as some juice and biscuits. A simple gift that I hope shows them that we care for them. We prayed for Alkheer and Alfathi before we left. Thanking God for saving their lives, praying for peace and comfort and healing for their little bodies
In a country wrought with so much pain and conflict already, young Alkheer and Alfathi had now suffered yet another horrible tragedy.
and their precious souls. I’m so thankful for MAF and for the life-saving flights they provide. And I’m thankful for you, thank you for making our ministry with MAF possible. Thank you for your prayers and support. Without your partnership, we couldn’t fly for Him here in South Sudan.

Flying For Life Spring 2016 | 11
While doing a research trip in Timor-Leste, MAF Australia’s communications Manager, Rich Thompson had the opportunity to ride along with Pilot Michael Bottrell for a medevac in Baucau, in the east of the country.
We immediately knew it was serious. Medevac calls from Baucau are rare. The roads between the hospital in Dili
and this region in the east are adequate for an ambulance to drive. For MAF to be called in meant the patient was in trouble. There were no specific details given to the MAF team except that they needed to bring a nurse from Dili, as well as a stretcher and an oxygen tank. Medevacs don’t often occur at the most convenient time and today was no exception. In Timor-Leste, MAF has two pilots - Michael Bottrell and Jonathan Lowe - and two aircraft. At this particular moment both pilots and both aircraft were at Oecusse after delivering teams of eye surgeons that morning.
Oecusse is in the far west of the country, a 45-minute flight from Dili, and another 30-minutes to Baucau. To make matters worse, both pilots were away from the airstrip at the time. They were visiting the hospital where the eye surgeons were operating: this is a good 40-minute walk from the airstrip. We quickly set about trying to find transport back to the airstrip, but the vehicles we had arrived in had disappeared. Finally, we found some men with motorbikes and spare helmets (this seemed to be the local version of a taxi). Jumping on the back we said the word that is thankfully common to most languages: “airport”.
(continued)
get to the hospital in Dili for additional bags of life-saving blood.
For Pilot Michael Bottrell situations like this happen every other day. Lives often hang in the balance as the MAF aircraft speeds to one of the seven airstrips it serves. As we approached the airstrip at Baucau I asked him how he deals with this kind of pressure. His answer was incredibly reassuring: ‘Medevacs move fast. I don’t spend time worrying about what I can’t control. I focus on the aviation side of things, making sure that I arrive quickly and safely, fully prepared for the patient. Once they are on-board I commit them to the Lord in prayer.’ I am very thankful for pilots like Michael and Jonathan. The way they approach these situations is exactly what people like Isabelle need. There’s no room for panic here. Their ability to focus on the job at hand, keeping their nerve as they deliver Christ’s compassion and love to people in their time of need, is - I
After the kind of motorbike ride you don’t want to experience too often, we reached the aircraft. Soon after, we took off towards Dili. As we left the dusty airstrip at Oecusse behind, we were each lost in our thoughts, wondering about the patient we were on the way to rescue.
It had been a horrendous 24 hours for

We are not on the ground for more than 10 minutes. In that time a group of men help us put Isabelle on a stretcher on the floor of the aircraft. Michael quickly and expertly straps her in. convulsing and the nurses at the clinic quickly realised she had developed eclampsia – a blood condition that can take place after child birth. Under normal circumstances eclampsia is a very serious condition. In a remote community it can be a death sentence. For Isabelle the situation was worsened by the fact that she had anaemia. This terrible combination is sadly not uncommon in developing countries and it makes treatment very difficult. For Isabelle, an urgent blood transfusion was required (this needed to happen alongside the magnesium sulphate treatment used to help women with eclampsia). In the clinic in Baucau, where Isabelle gave birth, bags of blood are a rarity. More often than not, they simply wouldn’t be available for people in her condition. Today, however, they had one precious bag in store. Of course as soon as the bag was hooked up, the clock started ticking. With every drop of blood, time was running out. Isabelle urgently needed to

Approach
As I turn around to take a photo of the scene, the nurse looks up at me. The look I captured in his eyes says a thousand words. In these moments it’s often hard to know if the patient will survive. Thankfully, this story ends happily. Isabelle and her husband are transported to the waiting ambulance and sped to hospital. I arrived 30 minutes later and found Isabelle being well looked after, her husband smiling. Soon they would both be reunited with the twins.

GA-8 Airvans in MAF’s global fleet
After our plane landed, Karen, the children and I were taken to our
apartment – an eight-minute walk from the office in Ulaanbaatar. My licence was quickly validated and I spent two days flying with our training officer. Flying here is different from anywhere I’ve ever flown before. Air traffic control is in Mongolian, altitudes are given in metres rather than feet, while aircraft instruments still display altitudes in feet. So doing the conversion takes some getting used to! The Mongolian countryside is truly spectacular. I had no idea there were so many mountains or that the elevation was so high. The highest airstrip I’ve landed on so far is at 7,300 feet. Winter temperatures are often between -20°C and -40°C, although the cold weather has a positive impact on aircraft performance. I’ve learnt to use cabin heater controls which I hardly touched when flying in Africa! Mongolia is a big country spanning three time zones. In Uganda, the furthest we could fly in a straight line within the country was less than two hours. Here, the furthest flight I’ve done so far is over five hours one way.
Recently, I flew two tiny infants to hospital. I also flew a team from Reaching the Light (RTL) to assess children with disabilities – later transporting two families to RTL’s treatment centre so the children could receive physiotherapy. Now winter is here, my flying is considerably reduced, allowing more time for our family to begin language lessons. I enjoy the sound of Mongolian and it will be interesting to navigate a new language. Fortunately, Karen, Andrew, Katrina and Jacqueline are all settling into their lives in Mongolia. Thank you for your prayers and support as we undertake the huge transition from Uganda to Mongolia. It will be interesting to see what lies ahead!

Day after day, the GA-8 Airvans in MAF’s global fleet help us get the right people to the right places at the right time.
The two GA-8s in Timor-Leste are greatly increasing the impact of the NGOs working in this desperate country. World Vision, Caritas, Water Aid, Oxfam, and around 26 other NGOs operating in Timor-Lese alone depend on MAF and the GA-8 Airvan to maximise the help they deliver.
Often it is the pilots who get the credit and thanks for a safely completed
flight. But there are SO many behind-the-scenes heroes who have at least as much, if not more to do, with the safe, efficient outcome of our flights.
Today I want to focus on the aircraft engineers. In the U.S. we call them mechanics or technicians. In other places like Europe, and here in Uganda, they are called engineers. They are my unsung heroes - the ones who work tirelessly behind the scenes to keep the aircraft running safely, fix the pilot “squawks”, and do all of the preventative maintenance and inspections. It’s certainly not the most glamorous of jobs in mission aviation, but it’s definitely one of the most critical. Our lives literally
depend on them doing their jobs well!I was (am) a licensed aircraft mechanic as well as a pilot. When we served with MAF in Indonesia, the pilots all helped do the routine inspections and maintenance on our planes. From time to time, when we had a mechanical issue out in the middle of nowhere, we were also called upon to help diagnose and fix the issue. Seven years ago in early 2009, one of the two magnetos failed late in the day,

so I spent the night in the village of Long Alango waiting for parts. The next morning one of the other pilots flew out a replacement magneto and some tools, handed them to me, and then departed to fly his schedule, while I fixed my plane and then flew home.
Here in Uganda, the roles are kept separate: pilots fly the planes, engineers fix them. Having helped to do “the
wrenching” in years past, really gives me a BIG appreciation for all of the seemingly mundane and often tedious, but extremely critical work that these guys do day in and day out! Our team of engineers and hangar staff are always ready to tackle any issue, and I’ve never heard them complain or grumble when the pilots bring in a new squawk. They definitely qualify as some of the unsung heroes of MAF.
MAF is always looking for qualified aviation technicians & engineers. If this is something that might interest you, contact MAF for more information.

var med å starte M
AF i Storbritannia. I 1947 kjøpte MAF i Storbritannia et to-m
otors " Miles Gem
ini", og i januar 1948 øy de til Afrika på en ni måneders lang undersøkelse. Denne endte dram
atisk, da yet krasjet. Men pågangsm
sitt liv i MAF. Boka heter "Hope has W

var med å starte M
AF i Storbritannia. I 1947 kjøpte MAF i Storbritannia et to-m
otors " Miles Gem
ini", og i januar 1948 øy de til Afrika på en ni måneders lang undersøkelse. Denne endte dram
atisk, da yet krasjet. Men pågangsm
otet var stort, og året etter hadde de kjøpt et nytt y "De Havilland Rapide", og i 1950 begynte MAF m

Still going strong.Operating in Angola since 1989, MAF’s Caravan in Angola is serial number 18 of nearly 2,500 built to-date. This engine replacement and other refurbishments could see this aircraft flying well into the next decade.
But no matter how frequent the inspections, or meticulous the maintenance, aviation rules require that
SERVICE BULLETINMANDATORY
Did you know?Regular maintenance can account for roughly 30% of the total cost of aircraft ownership - often more than the initial purchase price. Consider the 30-year cost of owning a Cessna 208 like the one MAF operates in Angola:
The same is true for the local pastor and missionary who are desperate
to bring the Gospel of God’s love to a village beyond the mountains that is ripping itself apart with tribal warfare. They aren’t thinking about service bulletins, airframe inspections, or acceptable failure rates, they’re only concerned with reaching a generation whose lives can be changed by the transformative message of God’s love. Your support means they don’t have to be worried about whether an MAF airplane can safely get them where they need to go. Because of you, the only
When a desperate mother places her dying child onboard an MAF airplane at a grassy airstrip in the middle of the jungle, she’s not thinking about Transport Canada requirements or scheduled maintenance. The only thing on her mind is getting her sick child the care he needs.
things on these passengers’ minds are the things that truly matter - sharing and experiencing the love of Jesus Christ in isolated places. MAF adheres to very high aircraft maintenance standards - often even higher than Transport Canada requirements. This can be costly, but it is essential for missionary flying in the most remote places on earth where even minor malfunctions can have serious implications. MAF airplanes are often the only safe and reliable means of transportation to otherwise isolated communities.
Consider, for example, the turbine engines found in any of our larger high-performance aircraft. Each of these engines is comprised of thousands of individual parts which must be inspected and replaced at regular intervals. At the heart of these engines in an area known as the “Hot Section,” lies a dinner-plate sized disc that glows cherry-red as it spins at 38,000 RPM during flight. The pressure created by the centrifugal force is so immense, it can only be manufactured using a special alloy machined to microscopic tolerances. It’s no wonder the replacement price of this single part alone can cost more than $100,000!
In regions without passable roads, MAF can reduce a doctor’s all-day trek by foot to a mere 20-minute flight, or provide a single flight that can haul a half-ton of cargo into an area that would otherwise require a train of pack animals, severalguides, and weeks of grueling effort to reach by land. When you are the only lifeline around, it’s critical that your aircraft are properly maintained. That’s why we place such a high standard on maintenance, making our aircraft among the safest and best maintained in the world.
some parts simply need to be replaced after a specified period of use. Despite our aggressive maintenance schedule, MAF’s Cessna Caravan in Angola will run out of engine calendar life as of August, 2016 at which time, it will be grounded. The cost of procuring, shipping, and installing a replacement engine is expected to be roughly $569,000.
Partners NeededWe need the balance of $550,000 by the end of July in order to purchase, transport, and install this new engine so as to minimize the downtime and the impact on ministry flying that it will cause. Can we count on your support? Please consider a tax-deductible gift to help keep this plane flying. Your gift - regardless of its size - can combine with those of others to enable us to purchase this engine in a timely manner. Thank you for considering this need.
