Mission Statement
Holy Love Evangelical Lutheran Church is
committed to proclaiming and living the Good News
of God's love in Jesus Christ as we gather for worship and study and scatter for witness and service to our
neighbors.
People of God at Holy Love,
It's that time of year again; I'm sure you've noticed that they've already (some say it starts just after Independence Day) started putting out Christmas decorations in the stores ... well maybe not the decorations, but certainly the retail goods. It's that time of year again, when we begin to think about the so-called 'holiday season'. And it feels like that time of year again, since the day I'm writing this is the first day that it's really felt like the summer heat has passed.
Whenever this time of year comes around, I start remembering past holiday seasons, especially those when I was young. In fact, just a couple weeks ago I went on a bike ride with my cousin, and the two of us were remembering together our family Christmas celebrations ... with this side of the family, they always happened the weekend before Christmas day, so we could be with the other side of the families for the actual holiday.
And remembering those celebrations on a bike ride (obviously) brought back to my memory the first geared bicycle (10-speed) I ever had. It was blue, with downtube shifters and brake lever extenders for the top of the handlebars, and it was a Christmas present.
Memory is powerful. Memory, obviously is the recall of past events, the recall of which helps us to know who we are; the recall of which helps us to form our identity. It's a true and significant tragedy when a person loses their memory, and they are blessed if there are people who love them and who can help them remember the past, remember who they are.
Which is one of the most beautiful things about families and about faith communities - they help us remember who we are.
One tool we use to help us remember and understand who we are in the ELCA, and in other Lutheran denominations in this country, is confirmation instruction. We gather young people together so that they can explore our faith in the context of community. We very intentionally gather them during the middle school years because that's the time, physiologically and neurologically, when people are beginning to be able to think about abstract ideas like God and faith and community and belonging. And we very intentionally do our best to provide a place where middle schoolers are accepted and supported and can find a place to belong.
…….continued on page 2
2
…..continued from page 1
Of course, family is so much more important and significant as young people discover their identity. The truth is that some people certainly do want to allow their children to form or discover their own beliefs, and so don't want to impose what they believe on their kids. Other people want to leave that teaching to the church. In both instances, what kids learn is that faith isn't important ... at least it's not important enough to take seriously and spend time on.
Which makes it even more important that we who do participate regularly in church life remain mindful that no matter what we do, how we act, or how much we interact with young people, we are sharing our faith with them. They had no idea I was doing it, but I remember watching the ushers at my home congregation very closely to see how they prayed; this remembrance from 35 years ago, still informs who I am today.
***
I encourage you, as the holiday season approaches and you might be remembering holidays from long ago, to recognize also that some day, someone will remember you ... and will remember how you shared faith with them.
Thank you for continuing to allow me to serve as your pastor.
~ pr. m

Interested in Becoming a Member of Holy Love?
Information Session on 12/6 Maybe you’re interested in officially becoming a member of Holy Love. Maybe you’re interested in learning more about this congregation, but not ready to become a member. Maybe you’ve become a member in the past couple years, but haven’t had the opportunity to learn what you want to about your congregation. Maybe you’ve been a member since the 70s, and you’re curious about how this congregation might be different now than it was 40 years ago. Maybe you’re simply curious about Holy Love’s theology, history, ecclesiology, liturgy, or clergy.
If you fit into any one of these categories, make sure you’re at Sunday School after (the one service of) worship on December 6. The class will be geared toward those who are interested in joining the congregation as members in January, but will be open to anyone.
Finally, if you plan on joining Holy Love in January, please take part in our New Church Directory. More information can be found on page 5 of the Mission Bell.
Women’s Bible Study All women of Holy Love are invited to join our fall Women's Bible Study
sessions. We will meet November 11 and December 2. Please join us for any or all, no preparation required. The meetings take place at Holy Love at 9:15 a.m. in the Youth Room. We take turns bringing brunch type treats and it is a special time for food, fellowship, and a chance to grow our faith. The Bible studies are facilitated by Marcia Monson and Kathie Haertling.

Operation Christmas Child is
Coming to Holy Love!
This is a great service project to do with kids, as the shoe-boxes go directly to kids in need!
Important Dates to Remember: 11/15 - Packed boxes returned to HLLC
What do I do? Find a Shoebox Start with an average-size cardboard or plastic shoebox. If you want to wrap it, cover the box and lid separately.
Girl or Boy? Decide whether you will pack a box for a girl or a boy, and the age category: 2-4, 5-9, or 10-14.
Fill with Gifts Select a quality “wow” toy such as a doll, soccer ball with pump, or stuffed animal. Then add other fun toys, hygiene items, and school supplies.
Pray Most importantly, pray for the child who will re-ceive your gift. You can also include a personal note and photo.
$7 Tracking Labels Donate $7 online and receive a tracking label to Follow Your Box and discover the destination of your shoebox gift.

Did you know November is
National Hunger and Homeless
Awareness month?
Aurora Warms the Night has advocated
on both local and statewide level for awareness with proclamations for national hunger and home-lessness awareness granted by City of Aurora Mayor Hogan, and by Colorado Governor Hick-enlooper. And with generous support from the community, AWTN is ensuring families and indi-viduals meet their most basic needs. By partnering with people like you, we are helping to break the cycle of homelessness. Here’s how you can help:
Donate, Gift, or Sponsor a Night of Shelter Providing warm shelter is our greatest need. It is also a perfect gift in someone’s name for a birth-day, holiday, special event, or way to thank your clients AND make a true difference in the lives of the homeless. Shelter: $25 per individual per night or Care Kits: $10 per food kit or $15 per hygiene kit Make a secure online tax-deductible one time or recurring donation at www.aurorawarmsthenight.org or mail a check to: Aurora Warms the Night: 1544 Elmira Street Aurora, CO 80010.
Attend an AWTN Fundraiser From shopping online, walking for awareness, or attending a fundraiser, you are invited to support AWTN in a variety of ways! Have a great idea or want to host an event? Join our newsletter, send us an email at [email protected] or follow us on Facebook.
Event Sponsor Sponsoring an Aurora Warms the Night event is a win-win for your company. Your name will receive exposure to a large audience of Aurora’s commu-nity, while demonstrating your company’s dedica-tion to helping homeless children, families and in-dividuals of Aurora.
In-Kind Donations and Drives You can help us collect items that make a tremen-dous difference in the lives of homeless adults and children. Coordinate a donation drive with your school, business, neighborhood, church, family, gym, or organization.
Donate Items Clothing: gloves, hats, scarves, socks, & blankets. Our most needed item is always gloves! Food Kits: 1 pull-tabs can of soup, 1 oatmeal pack-et, 1 packet of hot cocoa, 1 plastic cup, spoon & bowls, 1 granola bar or package of crackers, & 1 fruit cup. Place items in 1 gallon size zip-lock bag. Toiletries: washcloth, shampoo, conditioner, soap, razor, shaving cream, deodorant, toilet pa-per, toothbrush, toothpaste, feminine hygiene products, & comb. Items may be placed in 1 gallon size zip-lock bag, or donated individually. Hotel / travel size toiletries welcomed.

SCHOOL NEWS
By Mary Stephenson, Director
Isn’t it amazing how very fast the months fly by when our calendars are full! I can’t believe it is the 11th month of 2015!
October was quite a month of learning and en-joying outdoors and worship and oh my, so many excit-ing things took place.
Community Helper Days were held October 7th and 8th. We had a Cherry Creek School bus, a tow truck, construction worker, Century Link bucket truck, Par Officer and other police cars and a safety supply com-pany participate. The east parking lot transformed into a mini business district for a couple hours those 2 days. The children enjoyed it so much and a comment over-heard was “This is the BEST day ever!” The children had the opportunity to sit in the police cars and turn the siren on, sit in the school bus, touch a power drill, try on lots of safety glasses, masks, hard hats, watch the tow truck operate and the bucket truck go up and down. I am so grateful to the following people/companies represented: Captain Bob Stef, Par Officer Steve Nelson, Officer Ellison, Officer Salazar, Patty Cos-tello from Century Link, Chad Vermeer with Vermeer Construction, Mick from 24/7 Towing & Recovery, Bill Stephenson from Essential Safety Products and Cherry Creek Transportation. This was a first and will no doubt become an annual event! Children see many dif-ferent vehicles representing many different occupa-tions every day. What an experience to have some up close and personal just for them. God blessed us with wonderful weather, too.
Of course, learning a new letter each week, working on shapes and a color day also took place. There are always things to do at Holy Love Preschool and Kindergarten! And Kindergarten children always take homework folders home weekly but are very good at bringing them back with all work complete.
This month at worship, Pastor Matthew re-minded all even though we all look different, God knows who we are. What a boring world this would be if everybody looked alike! When Pastor Matthew put a mask on, God still knew who he was. What a wonderful message to be reminded of how special we each are! Thank you for your message and time spent with us.
PTO held a Butter Braid/Orchard Pie fundraiser earlier in the month. Thank you to all who participated in this event. Enough money was raised to replace wood chips with rubber mulch on the playground. Your participation helps provide new and upgraded items for our school. We are so blessed to have such a dedicated group of parents help make things like this possible. Over $4000 dollars was raised so KUDDOS to all! The mulch was replaced on Saturday, October 11th and many, many thanks to those who worked super hard hauling, raking and spreading it.
Thank you’s to our School Board for your con-tinued support. Each of you have very busy lives yet you are committed to this school. KUDDOS!!
And we can’t end the month without our annual Octoberfest. It takes many hands working together to transform the Fellowship Hall and Preschool classroom into fun-filled rooms. We held the traditional parade through the halls with parents and families being our audience, cheering everyone on. There was boo-ling, face painting, pumpkin penny search, fishing for pump-kins, basketball boo-ling, crafts and much, much more. Thank you to all the families who donated requested items for the goodie bags and to the many parents who helped with the activities.
Then there was Fall Break! And what a wel-come time that was…no lesson planning, no set sched-ule, no playground set-up, no children………..oops, I guess I shouldn’t have said that! This is a time for one to recharge, refresh and regroup before the busy months of holiday preparations begin.
Why is it when we see November on the calen-dar we automatically think of Thanksgiving? That could be because it is this month. Everybody is franti-cally searching for the right size turkey to feed many, get the best buys on the necessary fixings, coordinate schedules with families, etc. But Thanksgiving is much more. We should be celebrating this day every day of our lives. We have many gifts from God we take for granted—colorful leaves, plants, food to nourish us, water, warmth from the sun, the moon at night to guide our way and much, much more. Our God is an awe-some God and we are His masterpiece. Thank God each and every day for His gifts.
NOVEMBER BLESSINGS TO ALL!!

“BECAUSE OF YOU”
Shared by Roger Collins, Treasurer
One day I had breakfast with some old friends. Jim, a thin, strong, golfer type, about 85-years old, came along with us.
All in all, it was a pleasant breakfast. When the menus were presented, my friends and I ordered eggs, bacon and pan-
cakes except for Jim who said, “A large piece of home-made apple pie, heated please.” I wasn’t sure my ears heard
him right and the others were surprised when Jim continued, completely proud, “along with two large scoops of vanilla
ice cream.” We tried to act quite nonchalant, as if people did this all the time, but when our orders were brought out, I
didn’t enjoy eating mine. I couldn’t take my eyes off of Jim as I watched him savoring each bite of his pie a-la-mode.
The other guys just grinned in disbelief as they silently ate their breakfast. As I started to chuckle, Jim wanted to know
what I was amused about. I answered, “You confuse me. How come you ordered a rich dessert, while we feel like we
must be sensible in our food choice?”
He laughed and said, “I’m tasting all that is possible for me to taste. I try to eat the food I need and
do the things I should in order to stay healthy, but life is too short, my friend. I hate missing out on
something good. This year I realized that I’m not getting any younger and I’ve never been this old
before, so while I’m still here, I’ve decided it’s time to try all those things that for years I’ve been ig-
noring. I haven’t smelled all the flowers yet. There are too many trout streams I haven’t fished.
There’s more fudge sundaes to wolf down and kites to be flown overhead. There are too many golf
courses I haven’t played. I’ve not laughed at all the jokes. I’ve missed a lot of sporting events and
potato chips and cokes. I want to wade again in water and feel ocean spray on my face. I want to sit in a country
church more and thank God for His grace. I want peanut butter every day spread on my morning toast. I want un-
timed long distance calls to the ones I love the most. I haven’t cried at all the movies yet or walked in the morning
rain. I want to feel wind on my face. So if I choose to have dessert instead of having breakfast, then should I die before
nightfall, I’d say I died a winner because I missed out on nothing. I filled my heart’s desire. I had that final piece of
pie before my life expired.”
With that, I called the waitress over. “I’ve changed my mind,” I said. “I want what he’s having only ad some more
whipped cream!”
This is my gift to you. Live well, love much, and laugh often. Be happy and enjoy doing whatever your heart desires.
You only go around once on this wonderful planet. Be mindful that happiness isn’t based on possessions, power, or
prestige, but on relationships with people we like and respect and enjoy spending time with. Remember that if money
talks, ice cream sings! But don’t forget that your church needs you as does the rest of the world.
“We tend to forget that happiness doesn’t come as a result of getting something we don’t have, but rather of recogniz-
ing and appreciating what we do have.” Frederick Keonig
THANK YOU for your contributions, no matter how you give them.
A minister waited in line to have his car filled with gas just before a long holiday weekend. The attendant worked quickly, but there were many cars ahead of him. Finally, the attendant motioned him toward a vacant pump. “Reverend,” said the young man, “I’m so sorry about the delay. It seems as if everyone waits until the last minute to get ready for a long trip.” The minister chuckled, “I know what you mean. It’s the same in my business.”
