COVID PreparednessPraying Pelican Missions is doing our part to mitigate risk while moving forward in service and humility. We care deeply about the safety of your team, our host communities, and our staff. Here’s what we are doing to ensure safe and impactful mission trips during COVID-19.

Trip Criteria:We have developed a set of criteria based on information from the CDC, local and state officials, and under the guidance of health professionals that must be met before a location is able to host teams. These criteria include:• Allowable groups of 10+• Travel is permissible• Stay-at-home orders are lifted• Local partner’s approval• No mandatory quarantines

Trip Preparation:At Praying Pelican Missions, we are uniquely equipped to navigate potential uncertainties with a team of nearly 70 full-time staff who have been through extensive training. Each trip is fully customized to properly leverage the skills of your team to ensure the ministry is meaningful and in line with current conditions. Here’s what we do:• Dedicated consultant for each trip• COVID-specific training• Coordination with local health officials• 14 days of pre-trip health checks• Over 100 hours of in-person/virtual staff training yearly• Extensive contingency planning

Hear It From A Group Leader:“PPM turned out to be an ideal partner to work with during this COVID crisis. We were forced, due to national and state restrictions, to switch our location three times, including ten days prior to the trip! The PPM staff never missed a beat and worked behind the scenes to make the trip a great success despite the lack of time and preparation. While we had to forego certain ministry activities due to the virus, we were still able to serve the local community in meaningful ways and enjoy all that the area had to offer. I’m thankful for all the hard work PPM has put in to protect everyone and yet still make missions a priority during this time.”Drew Grigg Associate PastorCovenant Presbyterian Church

We at PPM are committed to supporting and uniting the local Church. We are actively coming alongside our partners to encourage and assist them as they serve their communities in the midst of unprecedented challenges. Along with you, we are eager to once again physically join them in this mission.

Page 29: Mission Catalog - Praying Pelican Missions

At Praying Pelican Missions, we have witnessed time and time again the impact of healthy short-term missions. We believe that when we build upon the three pillars of Genuine Partnerships, Long-Term Relationships, and Sustainable Ministry, we can craft an experience that will enhance local Church ministry rather than supplant it. As a ministry, it is our commitment to operate under the guidance and authority of the local Church. Healthy mission trips can only take place with healthy mission teams. As you plan your trip and prepare your team, here are a few fundamental things that help to create healthy teams: CREATE A COMMUNICATION CULTURECommunication is key, and with numerous methods of connecting with people, it is more important than ever to meet people where they are at. The mission field will stretch the individuals on your team in some incredible ways. It will be important for your team to communicate openly and with transparency. If you’re getting tired of saying it, that’s usually a sign of good communication. INSTILL CULTURAL APPRECIATIONIt doesn’t matter whether you are on a domestic mission trip or traveling overseas, humility and cultural sensitivity are key for any mission team. It goes way beyond, “we have a lot and they have a little” to create a genuine respect for and love for the cultural norms of the people you are serving. What is important to them? What topics or behaviors might people react poorly to? What can be learned from them? God’s Church is beautifully diverse, prepare your team for the experience. DEFINE YOUR CORE VALUESA mission trip is a big deal. It takes a lot of time and energy, but the end rewards are well worth the effort. Spend significant time communicating and reinforcing the central vision for your mission trip. Clarity over what your goals and expectations are for the trip will need to be communicated early and often. This is good for recruiting the right people to your team and driving them to deeper engagement in the ministry. DEVELOP COLLABORATIONSuccessful mission teams develop an expectation for collaboration and work hard to engage the entire team. Our goal in short-term missions is to build-up, encourage, and assist the local ministries we aim to serve. In order to do this, we must set aside our personal desires and intentionally seek to work in coordination with local leaders. WELCOME CALLIf you’re new to the Praying Pelican family, one of the first calls you’ll get is an administration call to walk you through the group leader account and answer any administration questions you may have.

INITIAL CALLThis call is for your consultant to understand the heart of your group. What are your goals, passions, and hopes/dreams for your trip? How do you want to challenge your team? What gifts, talents, and skills does your team have? This helps us determine what ministries will be the best fit for your team. This way we can pass that information to the head of operations for your location and ensure a good partnership fit.

DETAILS CALL This call is to talk through flights, transportation, devotional time andnightly meetings, and to get on the same page so the trip will run smoothly. If available, partnership and lodging information will be shared during this call. Your consultant will check in on how fundraising is going for your team. Each team member will need to fill out forms in their account, so your consultant will check that this is coming along as well.

Capstone Calls

ITINERARY & PREP CALLDuring this call, your consultant will share the itinerary for the week. They will be happy to talk you through each day and make sure you feel prepared for each ministry. Health guidelines, packing lists, and clothing guidelines will be discussed during this call as well. If not shared previously, the partnership information will be shared during this call.

FINAL DETAILSThis is generally the last call before your trip. Your consultant will share any last-minute details with you, talk through the airport or transportation routine for your location, and make sure you and your team feel prepared for your trip. Any last-minute questions will be answered on this call. After this call, you will receive an email detailing anything you may need to know before your trip. Emergency contact information and your trip journal link will be shared within this email.

Your PPM trip consultant will be available to you throughout the entirety of your trip planning process. In addition, there will be four main calls you can expect where a bulk of your trip information will be shared.
