Are you hungry? This issue of What’s On! Mission will be sure to entice your appetite! So many wonderful choices of places to eat in Mission and you will fi nd the best right here in our very fi rst Foodie Issue! Demand for space in this issue has been so high, that we were unable to run our planned directory of Foodie related businesses in the magazine so we will be posting a complete listing of Foodie businesses in Mission at www.whatsonmission.ca andwww.facebook.com/whatsonmission soon!

I am especially proud of a new feature that we are calling ‘Some of my favorite things…’ which will showcase some of my personal favorites. In this issue, you will read all about our good friend Russell Pohl aka Mr. Mom and his amazing catering and events company. Ever thought about having an event catered in your own home? Call Russell to book him for your next event.

When we set out to expand the number of pages in this issue of What’s On! Mission, we were anxious about our ability to fi ll so many pages yet, as it turned out, demand for space in this issue has been higher than ever! We ended with a waiting list and unfortunately were not able to include some wonderful stories that were sent to us, so we have already begun fi lling the pages for the July/August issue which we will be calling our Music Issue - featuring all the wonderful music that Mission has to offer. Keep those stories/articles coming in and we will do our best to include it in our next issue.

Thanks,

Seniors – receive a $20 eye exam with BC Medical Card / 65+Children receive a NO CHARGE eye exam with BC Medical Card / Under 19

A fact in the eye industry is that 39 million people are blind and roughly six times that amount have vision impairment that they may or may not know about. Getting an eye exam is one of the sure fire ways to find out if you fit into that group of people who need glasses but may not be aware of it.

Eye exams do not only check for your glasses prescription, they also check for health issues such as cataracts and glaucoma which can affect your quality of living. You will experience a lot of living through your eyes and a great majority of your learning; your eyes are capable of processing 36,000 pieces of information in an hour and the eye itself is made up of over 200 million unanimously working parts. Your eyes are important and it is good to get them checked at least every two years. We look forward to you coming in for your eye exam in the near future. #2 - 33231 First Ave Downtown Mission

Suburban SpoonCindy Greyell, owner of Suburban Spoon food truck, launched her culinary career in 1992. After honing her skills at Cafe Veneto she opened up Chefs Secret Service Catering Company in Vancouver and went on to build it into a 40 seat restaurant. After taking a “motherhood” break she re-launched the company in Mission in 2010. Recognizing the increasing trend in mobile cuisine, she and her husband Bryan began their food truck, Suburban Spoon.

Suburban Spoon is a fully equipped mobile kitchen that serves globally inspired cuisine. Fresh sustainable ingredients are utilized from around the world with the goal to serve “out of the ordinary” healthy foods. A

commercial kitchen on wheels is the ability to change the menu to suit all venues and demographics whether it be school lunches, weddings, music festivals or corporate and private events.

In 2013 Suburban Spoon became a part of the Informed Dining Program BC. Increasingly menus are evolving with an emphasis not only on taste and presentation but to nutrition and key ingredients that serve a happy and healthy customer. From small bites to big festivities Suburban Spoon takes you on your way to gastronomic pleasures.

My name is Barb Block. On January 14th 2014, I found out I had inoperable stomach cancer. Doctors said they could do nothing for me, but give me palliative care. I was unable to eat or drink without severe pain. My family and I looked into alternative healing which led me to see Dolf at FUEL in Mission. Dolf suggested some vitamins and supplements. I began drinking his Dolphin Water and I did light therapy sessions at his store. After my first session I came home and I had no pain. For the first time in months I was able to drink a smoothie with no pain.

Now I have more energy and can eat food and drink with no pain. I am feeling great!

SPRING LAWNCARE 101

STEP 1: REMOVE THATCH AND PATCH BARE SPOTS.Thatch is a tightly intermingled layer of living and dead stems, leaves, and roots which accumulates between the layer of actively growing grass and the soil underneath. This can be removed by using a stiff, long handled lawn rake. If bare spots occur, you may have to re-seed. For full instruction on re-seeding bare patches, check out our Help and Advice section on our new website, www.buildingsupplies.ca

STEP 2: LIME TO RAISE THE PH BALANCE OF THE SOIL.

Winter rains wash away nutrients and make soil more acidic. A soil’s pH is the measure of its acidity and alkalinity. Grass likes a sweeter, more alkaline soil. The way to make soil less acidic is to add lime. Dolomite and DoloPril lime are the two most popular varieties.

STEP 3: MOSS-CONTROL.

After liming is the best time to apply a moss-control fertilizer. However, since moss will still have to be raked away after it dies, and may even return, the best moss-control is to change the conditions where moss is growing. Decreasing your soil’s acidity, improving lawn drainage, and increasing natural light where possible are the best ways to reduce moss growth. Also, after raking up dead moss, sprinkling sand on the spots will help prevent regrowth.

STEP 4: FERTILIZE WITH CARE. Fertilizer can help your lawn grow thick and lush, but if it’s not used properly, it can actually damage the grass. A slow-release nitrogen fertilizer is best, and no more than 1 pound (0.45 kilograms) of nitrogen should be spread per 1,000 square feet (93 square meters). It should be applied early in the season when the turf begins actively growing, but be careful; using too much fertilizer or a fertilizer too rich in nitrogen will cause your grass to burn, and therefore undo all your hard work.

Compost is a great alternative to chemical fertilizer as it won’t burn your grass and is much safer for the handler and the environment.

SO WHY BOTHER?Lawns are worth the work. You will be rewarded with an ideal surface to have picnics on or to play any number of summertime backyard games (Bocce ball anyone?) At the very least, lawns provide a still, green, surrounding to enjoy all summer long.

For more advice on lawncare, or any other project you have this spring, come visit the friendly helpful staff at Fraser Valley Ace Hardware.

ALSO:Check out our brand new website www.buildingsupplies.ca, or like us on Facebook for more project ideas and in-store specials.

For those of you that want a lush, green lawn when summer rolls around but are not sure how to achieve that, the helpful hardware folks at ACE are here to lead the way!

Go for coffee or tea with a funny friend ~ call your funniest friend & ask them out for coffee or tea. Blackberry Kitchen, English Tarts & the Sweet Spot all serve Karla’s Special teas which are made by a local Mission Mom ~ she’s cool & really passionate about TEA!

Get Creative ~ take an art class or go to the goodwill & refurbish an old piece of furniture. Mission now has a 4 Cats Art Studio – I’ve heard it’s awesome!!

Eat, drink & be merry! ~ Mission has some great restaurants & it’s always fun to take the night off from cooking & go out. The Springs & the Zoo have local craft beer & if you like Indian food (I do!!) check out Sangham Sweets or Rabab, my other favourite place to eat in Mission is Little Saigon in the Junction.

Get active ~ take a dance class, go to yoga or get out & play a sport. Get active with like-minded people is fun. If you are struggling to get motivated, JUST SHOW UP – 80% of life is simply showing up.

Indulge in entertainment ~ many years ago I backpacked through Europe, we ended up in a hostel that was full of bedbugs ~ we had already paid & didn’t have enough $$ for another hotel so we had to make the best of it. Our solution :: go check out a Broadway play & be entertained for the evening :: it made the night bearable. Check out what’s happening at the Clarke Theatre & the events page in What’s ON.

Having Fun is a priority for me,

Mr. Mom’s World Catering and Events is a full service catering company. With clients now in Hawaii, New York, Chicago, Toronto and LA, Mr. Moms Catering is fast becoming one of BC’s premier catering companies.

Event planning is the tip of the iceberg of what Mr. Moms World can do for you. With a large inventory of linens,

entertainment, it is little wonder why Mr. Mom’s World is starting to take BC by storm.

Although Mr. Moms World started out under a different name that highlighted their Ukrainian Heritage, it went through a couple name changes over its 18 year history. The current name came about from the owner’s children, who had lovingly nicknamed him Martha, after Martha Stewart. Deciding perhaps being called Mr. Martha wasn’t so cool, he changed it to Mr. Mom instead.

Russell has since changed the format of the company, moving away from the straight Ukrainian menus to a more modern, fresh approach. Although they still have a Ukrainian menu, they now have a variety of menus. All

products used are as local as possible. They tailor menus to suit clients’ dietary needs as well as their budget.Catering luncheons, celebrations of life, movie sets, weddings, events, private parties and tradeshows, it doesn’t show signs of slowing. Not only do they have a huge catering menu, but they sell their frozen Ukrainian products and their home style baked products at several venues throughout the Lower Mainland. Throughout the

Some of my favorite things…By Cory Cassel

Every issue of What’s On! Mission is packed full of events, food, and services, which opens many opportunities to have new experiences. Here is one of my favorites.

Through my work with Cory Cassel Productions, I have become great friends with Russell Pohl aka Mr. Mom. Russell is a caterer, chef, event producer, foster parent, advocate, facilitator, speaker, husband, and father. But for my husband Yosuke and I, Russell is a great friend who is always sure to put big smiles on both of our faces.

Recently, Yosuke and I topped off a week of special occasions with a very romantic dinner for two, catered

“We’re all learning about diversity. No one has all the answers. Sometime you just have to listen.”

Cycling 4 Diversity is the brainchild of Mission resident, Ken Herar, conceived when he saw the need for raising diversity awareness, not only in the Fraser Valley, but all over BC. He, along with volunteer cyclists, tour Fraser Valley and Lower Mainland schools to speak to students about diversity every May. C4D began in May 2011 and Herar hoped for a way to encourage students and their community to become role models in their communities as diverse members.

The 2014 ride starts on May 20 and winds up on May 23, and begins and ends at the Mission Indian Friendship Centre. There will be a First Nations theme, starting with a bandana ceremony and ending with a warming blanket ceremony; the bandana means ‘good luck,’ and the blanket means ‘welcome home.’ The team features 8-10 riders, along with 10 volunteers, and includes Abbotsford Deputy Fire Chief Rick Lucy, and Abbotsford city councillor Bill MacGregor. There will be 20 stops at elementary and high schools across the Fraser Valley and Lower Mainland and the response from schools has been encouraging and welcoming. As well, the District of Mission and the Province of BC

have declared May 18-24 Cycling For Diversity week. “When we go to schools the message is simple: encourage kids during C4D week to make a new friend, reach out to their neighbors, play with new friends of different cultures, encourage that dialogue. Invite new people to your home, and if you see something

need more young role models to be part of C4D.”

Herar says there’s more to be done. “We need to learn how to communicate with diverse communities and new immigrants, and try to encourage kids to talk about the great things about cultural diversity.”

Culture Days is a collaborative national movement to encourage awareness, participation and engagement of all Canadians in the arts and cultural life of their communities, that takes place annually the last week-end in September. Last year Mission jumped aboard the national Culture Days initiative, with a number of events that took place over the last week-end of September 2013.

On the Saturday, Ancestor Connections presented Baskets: Containers & Culture at the Mission Library. Activities Included an exhibit and demonstrations of basket making skills, stories about basket makers, and an opportunity to try some basic techniques. The Mission Historical Society also gave tours of the new heritage mural located at the Mission Archives. Fraser Valley Academy of Dance held an open house - a “behind the scenes” look at dance classes, and rehearsals for The Nutcracker. The Mission Spinners & Weavers Guild held their opening reception for their Fibres on the Fraser Exhibition at The Mission Arts Centre.

On September 29, Mission celebrated BC Rivers Day with a new event, River Stories, Songs & Stewardship, at Mission Spirit Square. Sponsored by the Fraser Valley Watersheds Coalition in partnership with the Mission Arts

Council and Mission Adopt-A-Block, the event included a river clean-up, performances by Leq’ a:mel First Nation Drummers and Singers and by the Serenata Singers; keynote speakers; interactive eco-arts including felting, pine-needle baskets and hands-on-arts opportunities for all ages, and stewardship information booths.

All in all it was a great start to developing Mission’s own Culture Days event. We are hoping that more artists and organizations will join in celebrating arts and culture with the community September 26 to 28, 2014. The Cultural Resources Commission will be hosting an information session May 7 at 6pm at the Mission Leisure Centre with information on how to get involved in Culture Days 2014.
