IKBFU HISTORY: FROM KÖNIGSBERG TO KALININGRAD

MILESTONE PERIOD

1 Duke Albrecht Hohenzollern opened the Koenigsberg University.

17 August1544

1а The University was named "Albertina" after its founder. 1656

2 Kaliningrad State Teacher Training Institute was opened in Kaliningrad.

1948

3Due to the enlargement of its educational area the Institute was transformed into the Kaliningrad State University. 1966

Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University being one of innovative universities in Russia, strives for preserving and adding to academic traditions of its predecessors.

The following renowned figures as J.G. Hamann, J.G. Herder, F.W. Bessel, C.G. Jacobi, F. Lindemann, A. Hurwitz, D. Hilbert, F. Helmholtz, I. Kant taught or delivered lectures

at Albertina; K. Donelaitis studies theology; E.T.A. Hoffmann attended lectures.

Modernization of the research and laboratory facilities as well as workforce capacities is a basis of the federal university development strategy.

IKBFU today is the largest educational, research, and cultural centre of the westernmost region of Russia.

Main University Symbols: Sea Wave and Bridge

Rising Sea Wave symbolizes the University coastal location, its progress, and sustainable development.

2 200 Staff (including 300 people of colleges’ staff);

Teaching staff – 1200, including researchers – 130 people;

16 000 both undergraduate, post-diploma students, and course participants;

80 Degree Programmes; 11 Institutes, 2 Higher Schools; 35 Research Laboratories; 600 PhD students and Doctorates.

IKBFU is one out of 10 Federal Universities in Russia. Besides, it is the main educational institution in the Kaliningrad region.

IKBFU GOVERNANCE: SENATE

General University governance is carried out by an elected representative body – IKBFU Senate, headed by the Rector.

Direct management of IKBFU activities is carried out by the Rector Prof. Andrey Klemeshev, who is personally responsible for results of educational, research, financial, and economic activities.

IKBFU has more than 120 agreements on cooperation with educational and research organizations from various countries, the most intensive links are with Poland, Germany, Lithuania, Latvia, Belarus, Finland, Denmark, Austria, France, Sweden, Italy, USA, Estonia.
