Stations of the Cross
in the Mission Church The beautiful stations of the cross in the mission church
are copies of the original mission stations that are in the
church at Mission San Luis Rey in Oceanside. Our
stations were done by Andrzej Lojszczyk, a Polish
artist in residence at the mission during the 1980's -
90's.
The stations are in need of repair and restoration. Two
stations have been temporarily removed and work will
begin this week. This project is an integral part of the
restoration and renovation of this historic site and as
parishioners, we are the custodians of its preservation
for future generations.
We apologize for any inconvenience.
What is a Mother’s Day Novena? With our Mother’s Day Novena beginning on May 14
it is timely to explain what a Novena is. A novena is an
act of religious devotion that dates back to ancient
Christianity. It consists of private or public prayers,
devotions or repeated on successive days to obtain
special intercessory graces. Novenas may include such
devotions as the rosary or prayers dedicated to a par-
ticular saint or angel including the Blessed Mother and
Our Lord. In Medieval days it was common practice to
have daily mass for nine consecutive days for the re-
cently deceased. Other fitting occasions for novenas
include mourning, anticipation of a burial, celebration
of a major church feast, individual or group petition
and indulgences for the remission of sin. Certain
novenas can be performed in common with the
worshipping community or in private.
During our Mother’s Day Novena, we will remember
our dear Mothers, both living and deceased, and we
will be calling upon several retired priests to assist us
in offering these masses.
Drop by the Parish Office to pick up a card and
arrange for your Mother to be included.
CONGRATULATIONS—FR. JOHN DOLAN
Pope Francis has appointed Fr. John Dolan, as our
new Auxiliary Bishop of San Diego. Fr. Dolan was
raised in St. Mary Magdalene Parish and was or-
dained for the diocese in 1989 after studying theol-
ogy at Saint Patrick Seminary in Menlo Park, Cali-
fornia. The whole of his priestly ministry has been
focused upon the life of the parish, and he has been
pastor at St. Mary Star of the Sea in Oceanside, St.
Michael Parish in San Diego, St. Rose of Lima in
Chula Vista, St. Michael in Poway and Saint John and Saint Vincent
Parishes in San Diego. He presently serves as the vicar for Clergy.
Bishop Robert McElroy noted two central characteristics of Fr. Do-
lan's priesthood: the great love which he has for the priests and the
people of God, and the intensely joyful spirit that permeates his life
and mission. "Our local church" Bishop McElroy said, "will be deeply
blessed by these gifts in Bishop-elect Dolan's new episcopal role of
leadership, sacrifice and prayerful service." When told of his appoint-
ment, Bishop-elect Dolan said "I am profoundly grateful to his Holi-
ness Pope Francis for this honor, and I look forward to accompanying
Bishop McElroy in his ministry to this beautiful diocese in which I
have witnessed the presence of God's love continually for the whole of
my life." The episcopal ordination of Bishop-elect Dolan will take
place on Thursday, June 8, at 2:00 p.m. at Saint Therese of Carmel
Church in Del Mar.

ON THE ROAD One central metaphor employed to describe the
Christian life is a journey. In today’s second reading, Peter
addresses the early Christian community: “Conduct
yourselves with reverence during the time of your sojourn-
ing” (1 Peter 1:17). When we think of a journey, we
normally think of some kind of movement from point A to
point B. The Christian journey, begun in the waters of
baptism (point A) has as its ultimate destination eternal life
with God in heaven (point B). Unfortunately we find
ourselves on all kinds of detours along the way. Because
of sin, we make foolish turns and sometimes seem unable
to detect the presence of the Lord. Today’s story of the two
disciples on their way to Emmaus illustrates for us the fact
that, even when we are dejected or on one of our many
detours, the Lord is there, walking right beside us.
