FROM THE PASTOR, In today’s gospel, we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family. What a departure from the angels singing and heavenly hosts rejoicing during Christmas! The gospel writer, Ma hew, sends the Magi away and immediately throws baby Jesus, Mary and Joseph into the life of a family on the run. From the moment that the angel tells Joseph to flee, I can only imagine what the rest of that night must have been like. Throwing a few possessions into a sack. Some food, some water, a newborn baby and an exhausted moth-er with a babe in arms, all tossed onto the back of a donkey. It was a good thing the Magi brought gold and incense and myrr as gi s. Jo-seph would need those commodi es to buy food and shelter in Egypt. The experience makes me consider the plight of the refugee in our own

me. Most people in America don’t realize – there are over 43.7 million refugees and dis-placed people around the world. Eighty percent of those are women and children. All of these families have lost their homes to violence and war. They face daily the choices made by the Holy Family. Stay and risk being killed? Refu-gees have no choice. Joseph was fortunate. He was able to return to Galilee and restart their lives a er Herod’s death. Today, please say a prayer and consider the plight of those who can-not restart their lives without our love and sup-port. Fr. David Gaa, OFM Pastor

OUR STAFF WISHES EVERYONE A

VERY BLESSED NEW YEAR!

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

We are in the season of the Incarna on, the mys-tery of God’s love poured out in Christ’s birth. The word derives from the La n carnis meaning “flesh.” Throughout history, some Chris ans have distrusted the “flesh,” and stressed a hatred of this world and its pleasures. Perhaps they have not paid enough a en on to how “embodied” the sacraments are. One third-century author put it plainly in an image that may alarm diet conscious Americans, explain-ing that we wash the body so the soul can be cleansed, that we anoint the body so the soul can be strengthened, and that we eat the body and blood of Christ so that “the soul can fa en on God.” Catholics “get” that God is revealed in this world. The sacraments use the “stuff” of crea on: water and oil; the senses of the body, touch and taste and smell. We use the things of this world rightly. A er all, God’s love poured out into human flesh means the world has eternal value. Why else would Jesus describe the kingdom to come as a teeming city or a marriage banquet? Catholics are realists, and no-where is that more evident than when we gather for a sacrament.

The Promise of God’s Uncondi onal Love and Infinite

Generosity

The First Friday devo on is dedicated to the most Sacred Heart of Jesus and is associated with St. Mary Margaret Alacoque who was given the gi of an intense grace filled prayer life. In her mys cal insights (visions) she was given messages to fight the heresy of Jansenism that drove people way from God. The devo on to the Sacred Heart of Jesus em-phasizes the mercy and love of God and encour-ages believers to frequently receive communion. Through receiving the sacrament, people will come to experience and know the uncondi onal love of God. On First Fridays, Friday, January 3, parishioners gather a er the Daily Mass and spend from 8:00-10:00 a.m. in Eucharis c Adora on. People pray for themselves and the church to always prac ce and experience the mystery of receiving commun-ion and par cipa ng in the sacramental encoun-ter with Jesus. Please join the members of our parish in this very important part of the church’s devo onal life.

First Friday Devotion
