THE PRINCIPLES OF CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING – PART III

January 27, 2015 markedthe 70th anniversary of theliberation of the death camp atAuschwitz. The Holocaust orShoah lasted for six longyears. Six million Jews

perished simply because they had Jewish blood intheir veins. Conversion to Christianity or to the Naziparty could not save them. For most Jews, before theywere murdered they were debased and utterlyhumiliated in the concentration camps with everyshred of human dignity stripped from them. “Underconditions of hunger and cold, the body, we learnedin the camps, is liable to lose its divine qualities. That too was part of the wickedness of themurderer….” (a camp survivor)

The terrible darkness of the Holocaust has hauntedtheology, both Christian and Jewish, ever since theovens were extinguished in 1945. How could anyhuman being inflict this hellacious evil on another? Was it made possible by a Nazi belief that Jews, gypsies, homosexuals, Slavs…were less than human? Was the presence of God felt in the camps, or in theirliberation and its aftermath?

The foundation of Judeo-Christian socialteaching is the principle of human dignity. Everyhuman being, simply because they are human, isworthy of respect and has an inherent dignity thatcan never be taken away or forfeited. This dignityis God given. We cannot surrender it. And we maynever treat another human being in a manner thatviolates their humanity. “In the divine image Hecreated them, male and female He created them.”

Our sins are relational. How am I relating toother human beings - the image of God? Thehistory of the human race is a sad history ofrevenge, retaliation, war and conflict. Millions ofhuman beings have parish on battlefields andmillions more civilian deaths in the cities of Europeand Japan. Dictators like Hitler, Stalin and Pol Pothave continued the bloodletting.

40% of the world’s population goes to bedhungry at night and a good percentage of themlack daily nutrition. Is there any wonder whyfrustration and anger lead wounded people toviolence against those who have more? In spite of the civil rights movement andthe Civil Rights Act in the 1960s in our countryracism persists. The abuse of power by whitesover blacks that enslaved African Americansfor hundreds of years, has been mitigated, butnot banished. It was a court of law that broughtfreedom and racial equality, and sadly not theSermon on the Mount. War, and poverty andracism are not evils that begin out theresomewhere. They begin in the human heart. Iam sure you join me in asking for the grace ofbrutal honesty to see if the seeds of war andpoverty and racism are within. And when Irecognize those evil inclinations - cry out inprayer for the transforming power of the HolySpirit to melt my heart and give me a pureheart; the heart of Christ himself.“You have heard that it was said to people ofold, “You shall not kill, and whoever kills shallbe liable to judgment.” But I say to you thatwhoever is angry with his brother shall beliable to judgment; whoever insults his brothershall be liable to the council; and whoever says‘you fool!’ shall be liable to the hell of fire.”(Matthew 5. 21-22)

Peace, Father Bruce

AMAZING GRACE

God’s lavish love and forgiveness go out equally tothose who have worked hard and to those who haven’t, to thosewho have been faithful for a long time and to those who jumpedon-board at the last minute, to those who have had to bear theheat of the day and to those who didn’t, to those who did theirduty and to those who lived selfishly.

God’s love isn’t a reward for being good, doing ourduty, resisting temptation, bearing the heat of the day in fidelity, saying our prayers, remaining pure, or offering worship, goodand important though these are. God loves us because God islove and God cannot NOT love and cannot be discriminating inlove.

God’s love, as scripture says, shines on the good andbad alike. That’s nice to know when we need forgiveness andunmerited love, but it’s hard to accept when that forgivenessand love is given to those whom we deem less worthy of it, tothose who didn’t seem to do their duty. It’s not easy to acceptthat God’s love does not discriminate, especially when God’sblessings go out lavishly to those who don’t seem to deservethem.

Although deep down we know that God has been morethan fair with us, God’s lavish generosity to others is somethingwhich we find hard to accept. Like the workers in the Parable ofthe Vineyard who toiled the whole day and then saw those whohad worked just one hour get the same wage as theirs, we oftenlet God’s generosity to others warp both our joy and oureyesight.

But that struggle points us in the right direction. Grace isamazing; by disorienting us, it properly orients us.
