PASTOR’S

Grace and peace to youfrom God our Father and theLord Jesus Christ! “May Godwho began this good work inyou bring it to completion inChrist Jesus.” The ParishSteering Committee has beenmeeting on developing a

Pastoral Plan for St. Kilian since last fall 2014. Wehave participated with neighboring parishes, in aPlanning Workshop led by the diocese. We have beenadvised that a parish study will assist our efforts increating a Parish Vision Statement, to accompany theMission Statement that now appears in our bulletin.

The Mission Statement is a word picture of whereSt. Kilian’s parish is at the present time. “TheCatholic family of St. Kilian parish seeks to be avibrant, welcoming community of faith, guided by theHoly Spirit, nourished by God’s word and theEucharist, and committed to witnessing God in andthrough our neighbors.”

The Vision Statement will describe where St.Kilian’s parish leadership sees itself in the future. Inorder to have a clear idea about the future we need tounderstand where we are in the present. A parishstudy, professionally administered, will assist ourefforts. A Vision Statement is by definition a wordpicture of a future that is different from the present. That future will require change in order to come intobeing. The programs and apostolates already in placewill, of course, continue. The vision statement will belimited to no more than five major initiatives.

For example, since our Mission Statement makesclear that the Eucharist, prayer and hospitality arecentral to our parish, the Vision Statement mayindicate that we need to develop warmer and morehospitable masses (the development of a “HospitalityMinistry”), as well as more opportunities outside ofSunday mass for praying with Scripture in smallgroups. (as was done in the past at St. Kilian withRenew 2000).

A sample goal of the Vision Statement might read:(“By May, 2017, 50% of adult churchgoers will beparticipating in small group faith sharing.)

The Center For Applied Research in theApostolate (CARA), located at GeorgetownUniversity, is a sociological study organizationused extensively by the US Catholic Bishopsconference. We would like to employ theirservices. CARA offers a Parish Life Survey:

“From its pool of nearly 600 nationally testedquestions, CARA will design a questionnaire foryour parish that will provide an overall picture ofparish life, including in-depth analyses of issuesfacing the parish, evaluations of parish programs, assessments of parishioner needs, and ademographic profile. The Parish Life NarrativeReport includes: Executive Summary; easy to readnarrative of the patterns in the data; tables, chartsand graphs explaining major findings; onecomparison between parish groups, such ascomparisons between generations of parishioners,by level of involvement in parish life, by massregularly attended, or by language of response tothe survey; and response frequencies for allquestions.”

The CARA survey is administered to all Massattendees during the weekend masses on aparticular weekend. Completing the questionnairetakes between 10 and 15 minutes. CARA charges:$2500 base price, +1 dollar per processedquestionnaire. We average around 1500 adults perweekend. Total: $4000.The results of the surveywill be given to all parishioners. Once we receivethe results of the Survey, we can dedicate aFollow-Up Weekend and highlight all the findingsas well as key issues for parish leadership toconsider. CARA offers the services of a CARAassociate to assist our Action Plan if we wish.TheSt. Kilian Steering Committee will be charged withwriting The Vision Statement. They will bemeeting Monday June 29, 2015. It is expected thatthe CARA Parish Study questionnaire weekendwill be calendared for September 2015. Pleasekeep our Pastoral Planning in your prayers. If youhave some constructive thoughts or ideas, emailme or Jim Porter, the Steering Committee Chair [email protected]

Call For Help!

As you know the St. Kilian Players are infull swing for their 28th summer show which isgoing to be the well beloved and criticallyacclaimed- “Kiss Me Kate.” The show will takeplace in late July with ticket information to follow. Many people are hard at work getting it ready sothat the St. Kilian Players tradition will continue. However, at this time there is still a real need formore help, especially in some of the productionaspects of the show like set design andconstruction, lighting, props, ticket sales, househelp and many other areas. When the St. Kilian Players committed tocontinuing in the seven year tradition that wasfounded by Father Chuck Romano, it did so byplacing an emphasis on the mottos “give, not get”and “we not I.” These were not meant to be triteor pithy sayings but rather the undercurrent ofmotivation for all St. Kilian Players. For the mostpart they have proven to be just that. Whatevercrossroads or challenges the St. Kilian Playersfaced, they were met with these guiding mottos. A few weeks ago, our parish celebratedanother Stewardship Time and Talent MinistryFair to showcase and invite more parishioners togive of their time and talent in our many andvaried parish ministries. One of those ministriesfor 28 years has been the St. Kilian Players. Inorder to successfully mount this year’s summerproduction, there is a need for more time andtalent to be shared by parishioners. Whether youare a new person or a dormant St. Kilian Player, what you can do is needed. There is a place foreveryone. The commitment, depending on whatyou do will be over in less than two months. The St. Kilian Players began and hascontinued because members have made thecommitment, many on a yearly basis, to put ittogether bit by bit. There has been a value thatwent beyond the personal to a desire of givingback to God for all he has given us. So please, ifpossible, ponder the “we, not I” and “give, not get”part of your soul and if possible give a call andget involved either again or for the first time.Hope to hear from you soon and definitely at theshow in July.

11St. Kilian Catholic Church

Could you imagine for a moment that because of an illness or loss of job you were havingtrouble feeding or sheltering yourself or your family? A crisis can take many forms and strikein an instant. The good news is that because of you, the Catholic Ministries Appeal provides thesupport necessary for our Parish Outreach and Catholic Charities programs to assist those intheir time of greatest need.

Every day, people in our community are helped because of support from funds raised throughthe Catholic Ministries Appeal…Dads like James. James saw information about the CatholicMinistries Appeal at his local parish, and he knew he had to turn to the Church for help sincehe had nowhere else to go. James had been gainfully employed for more than 10 years when hebegan to feel ill. Soon his medical issues made it impossible for him to keep working and hewas forced to go out on disability.

After paying the co-pays on his medications, his family’s rent and utilities bills, James had verylittle left to purchase food and other necessities for his family.

It was hard for him to ask for help, but with nowhere else to turn, he did. Catholic Charitiesfound him a specialist who assessed the family’s needs and directed them to appropriate resourcesin his community. He went to his Parish Outreach, where his family received food that let themmake it through the month. James and his family got the help they so desperately needed.

Today, James is back to work and the family is doing well. “I am so thankful that I know thereis somewhere I can turn, where there are people that care, people I can talk to, if I am ever insuch a situation again,” shared James.

Thank you for considering this special request to make a gift to the 2015 CatholicMinistries Appeal. Please know that no gift is too small and every gift makes adifference in the lives of Dads like James and so many others. You may pick upinformation and pledge cards in the back of the Church, or for more information, visit www.CatholicMinistriesAppeal.org or call 516-379-5210 ext. 2

Parish RegistrationOne of the confusing aspects of parish life isthe matter of parish registration.  ”What doyou mean I am not registered; I was marriedhere?” and many such questions.  TheCatholic Church, St. Kilian Church has doorsopen to all.  You receive most sacramentshere; attend Mass here, live here all your life. The parish in which you live (territorially) isyour parish.  That parish has jurisdiction overyou for several matters of church life.  Youare to be baptized and married in the parishin which you reside; the parish in which youreside is called for emergencies and sick calls. For certain things you must go through theprocess of registration: for children to attenda Catholic school or religious education; forsponsor certificates for baptism andconfirmation; for letters of recommendation.

It can be compared to voting.  You may livein your home for generations.  Here you payyour taxes; send your children to school, shop, etc.  But to vote you must register.  In theparish we need you to register so that we knowyou and provide the services you need.

How do I know if I am registered?  Do youreceive parish mailings?  There are twogroups of mailings:  those who use the parishsupport envelopes and those who do not. Those who use them receive the mailings ona regular basis; those who do not receive onlyEaster and Christmas mailings.  If you receiveneither you are not registered.

How do I register?  It is a simplematter of filling out a formwhich may be picked up at therectory office, or call the rectoryat (516)249-0127 to request a

form be mailed to your home.

Registering helps us in the rectory to knowthe parish better.  How many parishioners dowe have?  How many children will needReligious instructions in the coming years? What is the age of our parishioners and howdo we adjust for their needs?  Who needsassistance?

In a masterful book on grace, Piet Fransen suggeststhat we can test how well we understand grace bygauging our reaction to this story:

EMBITTERED MORALIZING - AN OCCUPATIONALHAZARD FOR GOOD, FAITHFUL PERSONS

Imagine a man who during his whole life is entirely carelessabout God and morality. He’s selfish, ignores thecommandments, ignores all things religious, and is basicallyconsumed with pursuing his own pleasure - wine, sex, and song. Then, just hours before his death, he repents of hisirresponsibility, makes a sincere confession, receives thesacraments of the church, and dies inside that conversion.

What’s our spontaneous reaction to that story? Isn’t itwonderful that he received the grace of conversion before hedied? Or, more likely: The lucky beggar! He got away with it!He got to have all that pleasure and still gets to go to heaven!

If we felt the latter emotion, even for a moment, we have neverdeeply understood the concept of grace. Rather, like the olderbrother of the prodigal son, we are still seeing life away fromGod’s house as fuller than life inside God’s house, are stilldoing the right things mostly out of bitter duty, and are secretlyenvying the amoral. But, if this is true, we must be gentle withourselves. This is an occupational hazard for good, faithfulpersons.

Thomas Halik, a Czech writer, suggests that one of the reasonswhy so many people in the world reject the churches is that theysee us as “embittered moralizers”.

Sadly, there’s more than a little truth in that accusation. Toooften, we are embittered moralizers, secretly envying theamoral and criticizing our world out of bitterness. But that’s anoccupational hazard for the good and the faithful. Peter and firstapostles struggled with it. Why should we be immune?

We needn’t be immune, but we do need to be honest in admittingthat, despite our real goodness and fidelity, this indicates thatwe are still far from being full saints.
