PASTOR’S DESK Blessing Our Pets Some people ask why we bless our pets. First, let me inform you that Longwood Hills Congregational Church has performed pet blessing for many years. This was an event before I became pastor in 2014 and one I was happy to continue. We schedule the pet blessing on or near October 4 which is the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi who died on October 3, 1226. St. Francis had a deep love and appreciation of all animals and viewed them as cherished and treasured creatures of God. Many have adopted this view and today there is a new effort to protect and preserve animals as equals to human beings. Pets play a significant role in the lives of individuals and families. They are beloved companions that provide unconditional love and affection to those who care for them (notice I didn’t say “own” them). Our pets are given to us for a time, to care for and to enjoy our relationship with them. They draw people of all ages out of self-centeredness to other directed love and affection. For the most part, they are utterly dependent on humans to provide care and nurture. Our pets are especially important to the maturation process of children. They require care and feeding. Pets don’t clean up after themselves. Humans have to take them out, give them exercise, show them affection, provide a safe and comfortable environment and generally look after their well-being. For children, pets are the first experience in moving beyond themselves and connecting in responsible and caring ways with another creature. Since pets have a shorter life-span they teach children about the circle of life and the limitations we all experience. Nothing lasts forever. On Saturday, October 5, from 10:00 a.m. to noon, we will gather to bless our pets. You are invited to bring your pet(s) for a blessing. Not all pets can leave the home. Some may be homebound or maybe they don’t play well with others. Bring a picture that we can bless in their absence. This goes for pets who are no longer living. We will bless their memory and the joy they brought to you and your family. There will be other activities and vendors that may interest you. Invite your neighbors and friends as we celebrate the wonderful animals God has blessed us with in this life! Peace, Pastor Jim

Stewardship News

Recently we gathered an offering to aid those who suffered so severely from Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas. We want to thank you for your generous gift of a little over $700.00 which has been sent on for distribution. It will take years for recovery to be complete and your gift helps the people to move toward that goal.

Neighbors In Need Special Offering

On Sunday, October 6, World Communion Sunday, we will receive a special offering to support vital ministries across our nation that meet the needs of those living in poverty, and suffering from hunger, and children who are suffering from these conditions. This yearly appeal is known as Neighbors-In-Need and this year is entitled “Love of Children”. Your contribution will help support churches and agencies that provide aid for children suffering from poverty, hunger and disease. It also supports groups who advocate on behalf of these children to provide programs that lift them out of these conditions. Please give this special offering your prayerful consideration and let’s join together to lift our neighbors in need.

We have all the materials needed including complete lesson plans and supplies. No experience is needed, we can train you, and help you learn the ropes by co-teaching for a few Sundays. We have awesome Sunday School volunteers to help assist you during class by being that extra pair of hands. Have you been praying about how to make a difference and spread the word of God’s love? This is your answer! So what are you waiting for? Contact Linda Wagoner for more information: call/text 407-252-4336 or email [email protected]

Creative Tips for Faith Sharing

A Nine Month Series

Part 6: Tips for Creative Faith Sharing

In Your Home and With Your Family

*Witness your faith with your own family by gently stating "I believe..." *Commit to regular prayer before meals and family devotions. *Play Christian music when listening to background music. *Monitor the television viewing of your children; take time to explain

why something might offend or please you. *Model your faith by taking time for daily devotions and Bible study. *Model stewardship and hospitality by giving money or food to people

in need. *Evangelize your children by sharing a Bible story with them before bed-

time. *Take time to talk about what you experienced at Sunday Worship.

This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples. John 15:8 (NIV)
