It can be easy to dismiss not-for-profit status, and not really understand the point. After all, what does it mean to be a not-for-profit community? Why does it matter? In my experience, there are a lot of good answers but for me the strongest one is that the “not-for-profit” part enables us to focus a great deal more intensely on the “community” part. Our world gets larger the more connections we make, gets richer the better we understand one another, and gets deeper with every project we work on side-by-side. We can come together in so many ways, and achieve so much because every one of us is focused on our shared core mission and values – and not distracted by payments to shareholders or the price of our stock. Yes, a solid financial foundation is critical but it is a means to many amazing ends, and never the end in itself. The world is evolving. Never before have we experienced such a diverse and long-lived population of older adults – for heaven’s sake, let’s not waste this tremendous resource! Please take a minute to look over all the work we are involved in…you may be surprised and I am sure you will be proud. Vassar T. Byrd CEO
