The Mission Theatre, 32 Corn Street, Bath BA1 1UF 01225 428600
Top class performances Marvellous entertainment Tempting Bistro mealsThe Mission Theatre is proud to present a vibrant Summer season jam-packed with the excellent shows, concerts and productions that you have come to expect from this resourceful and innovative venue. As always, we are delighted to welcome back performers who have enjoyed working at The Mission in the past and are returning with a selection of popular and engaging plays. As our reputation grows, it is not surprising that new companies are also flocking to our door and during the Summer you will have the chance to enjoy new writing, comedy and music from these first time visitors.
The range and variety of The Mission Theatre’s resident company, Next Stage, goes from strength to strength, with talented actors working every month on exciting, thought-provoking and stimulating productions. In July Next Stage takes on a new challenge by staging a Double Bill of Our Country’s Good and The Recruiting Officer. This is the first time Next Stage has produced a play written before the 20th Century but since it is the one being rehearsed by the convicts in Our Country’s Good I thought the break with tradition was justified. Do try and get along to see both plays and take advantage of the special ticket offer.
In January I had the chance of a link up with Next Stage’s leading patron Sir Alan Ayckbourn. Without Sir Alan’s constant help and encouragement, Next Stage would not have developed to the point where we were able to take on the challenge of opening an independent theatre in Bath. I was delighted to be able to tell him that here at The Mission Theatre we are regularly delivering his vision of engaging, high quality, theatre-in-the-round productions and that more and more people are discovering this intimate venue created in an attractive Grade II listed former chapel. In turn, Sir Alan asked that his best wishes should be conveyed to all who visit, perform in and support The Mission Theatre.

Noughts and Crosses adapted from Malorie Blackman’s novel by Dominic Cooke
“Love doesn’t exist, friendship doesn’t exist between a Nought and a Cross.” (Callum Act 2)In a society divided by tribal bigotry, Crosses are the superior majority and Noughts are the underclass. As Nought separatists fight for equality and inclusion, two children from opposite sides embark on a bittersweet love story. As Callum and Sephy grow closer and their friendship turns to love they are faced with impossible choices: do they remain loyal to their families, or to each other?Noughts and Crosses is one of the most important stories for young people to have been written in the last 20 years. With its universal themes of intolerance, persecution, loss of innocence and family conflicts, this modern take on the Romeo and Juliet story brings timeless issues into the limelight for a new generation. www.next-stage.co.uk With grateful thanks to this show’s Angels

Our Town by Thornton Wilder
Alicia Harding is a struggling actress, but would you do anything it takes to make it big? Stuck looking after a big-shot director’s dog - who not only causes trouble in her personal life, but also does his ‘business’ whenever, and wherever he feels the need - she soon finds her way to the boss’ laptop and the rest of the theatrical world. But will her gutsy attitude serve her well or ruin her career forever? This one woman show is not one to miss!
Second Face is a rapidly growing theatre company, operating in and around Bath, with the intention of creating theatre with a fresh feel. www.secondfacetheatre.co.uk
“If music be the food of love, play on…”
A woman dressed as a man, caught in a love triangle, wooing a woman who loves her, for the man she herself loves – what could possibly go wrong…?
RumDoxy Theatre presents the latest addition to their Shakespeare On a Shoe-String collection. They really have made music the food of love with their adaptation of Twelfth Night; a comedy of misplaced love, mistaken identity, deception and disguise. In their own inimitable style RumDoxy add a live band, a dingy basement recording studio and a close cast of six to create a 90 minute serving of enjoyable family entertainment.
“You gave Shakespeare a new lease of life!” (GW, audience member) www.rumdoxytheatre.co.uk
“Nice town, y’know what I mean? Nobody very remarkable ever come out of it, s’far as we know.”
Set in the small town of Grover’s Corner, New Hampshire, Our Town is Thornton Wilder’s classic tale of American life in the early 20th Century. A story about ordinary citizens and their everyday existence, the play takes us through twelve years in the life of the town, and centres around two families and their experiences of life, love and loss.
Following their hugely popular production of Blue Remembered Hills, Apollo Theatre Company return to The Mission Theatre with an exciting new production, celebrating the 75th Anniversary of this classic play.

Next Stage Theatre Company presents
Top Girls by Caryl Churchill
Marlene, the new Managing Director of “Top Girls” employment agency, toasts a bizarre collection of friends at her celebratory dinner party:
“We’ve all come a long way. To our courage and the way we changed our lives and our extraordinary achievements.”
In the play’s madcap opening scene, the guests at the party - a series of exceptional women from history and art - describe how they have overcome the power of men in an attempt to achieve their dreams.
However, the year is 1981, and before long the fantastical dinner party is swept away and the story unfolds of Marlene’s own tricky climb to be one of the “Top Girls”.
The rest of the play reveals the straight-talking world of working women in the 1980s and becomes an intriguing and shocking social drama, revealing exactly who and what has been sacrificed for Marlene’s success.
Horrifying, funny and inspiring by turns, this renowned play by one of Britain’s greatest living playwrights has language that will shock and a sting in its tail. Boasting an all female cast, this fast-paced, unflinching production promises an evening of theatre to keep you talking all the way home.

Novato Theatre Company’s Awaken
MAINAUDITORIUM
Novato Theatre Company make their debut performance at The Mission Theatre with their devised piece Awaken. This new and dynamic company is bursting with energy and style, ready to showcase their original ideas in a creative explosion of mythological madness.
Awaken begins by exploring Plato’s concept of the soulmate, drawing upon ancient mythology. Cupid and Psyche are cruelly torn apart by the almighty Jupiter, King of the Gods, who feels threatened by the growing strength of mankind. Psyche must undergo a series of gruelling tasks, set out by Cupid’s mother Venus, in order to prove her love. As the piece unfolds Psyche and Cupid’s relationship is challenged by the complications between the mortal world and the Gods. Cupid and Psyche’s son, half mortal, half God, delves into a world of story books brought to life by his imagination in order to escape the chaos of his feuding parents.
Novato Theatre Company was founded in 2012 after the success of their sister company, Novato Dance. Their performances are entirely devised and explore a range of theatre styles including physical and post-modernism with a bit of comedy thrown in for good measure.

What Sinatra was to the 1940s, Elvis to the 1950s and the Beatles to the 1960s, John Denver was to the 1970s. Ivor George stunningly recreates the sound, the look and the unique spirit of John Denver in this remarkable tribute show.
Ivor reaches his audiences in much the same way that John did at every emotive performance. He engages his listeners with earthy humour and entertaining anecdotes; he captivates them with 27 of Denver’s best-known songs, including timeless favourites like Annie’s Song and Take Me Home Country
Roads. Accompanying Ivor George is Richard Spong,
a strings specialist with a masterful
interpretation of the Denver
sound.
Middle-aged women: an Endangered Species. Are we too old for careers, sex and a social life? Who says? Through sketches, monologues, song and dance, Flip and Maggie share what it means to be thirty plus ... well thirty plus plus ... well all right, 30XL in the 21st Century.
Subjects tackled include parents who won’t grow old gracefully, to Botox or not to Botox? and the latest Hip-Hop moves. Meanwhile, in another era, two Jane Austen ladies try not to discuss “women’s problems”.

‘A thoroughly entertaining show. Dynamic, entertaining and borderline inappropriate.’

Next Stage Theatre Company presents
On Golden Pond by Ernest Thompson
Forthcoming from Next Stage in Autumn 2013Tue 10 – Sat 14 September 7.30pm
MAINAUDITORIUM
“You’ve always loved being here on Golden Pond with nothing to do. Why is this summer any different?” (Ethel, Scene 2)
On Golden Pond is the love story of Norman and Ethel Thayer. The tart-tongued retired professor and his long-suffering wife have stayed in their holiday home in Maine each Summer for as long as they can remember. When their divorced, middle-aged daughter comes to visit with her new man and his young son in tow, this Summer seems set to teach Norman a thing or two about love, forgiveness, and the inevitable passing of time.
Adapted into an Oscar-winning film in 1981 starring Henry Fonda and Katharine Hepburn, Next Stage is proud to present this American classic.

Next Stage Theatre Company presents
Our Country’s Goodby Timberlake Wertenbaker
The Recruiting Officerby George Farquhar
MAINAUDITORIUM
Australia, 1789. The First Fleet from Britain lands in Botany Bay. Whilst the officers in charge of the penal colony hunt and shoot the native kangaroos and aborigines alike, the small-time criminals in their charge are being persuaded by Second Lieutenant Ralph Clark RN to stage a play: The Recruiting Officer.
Celebrating its 25th Anniversary in 2013 Timberlake Wertenbaker’s iconic play, Our Country’s Good, tells the story of this first production in Australia, performed thousands of miles from London with only two copies of the text, a cast of convicts and a leading lady about to be hanged.
George Farquhar’s The Recruiting Officer is a classic English Restoration comedy featuring the womanising Captain Plume and his adventures and mis-adventures with Sylvia - a seductive heiress and daughter of a local gentleman. Forbidden by her father to marry the notorious Plume, Sylvia disguises herself as a man and seeks to become one of Plume’s “recruits”. Needless to say, all ends happily and all complications are resolved. Despite its lighthearted approach The Recruiting Officer accurately reflects the realities of eighteenth century recruiting practices and the place of women in a male-dominated society.
Next Stage’s Artistic Director Ann Garner has wanted for many years to replicate the double bill of Our Country’s Good and The Recruiting Officer that she first saw performed in Bath by Max Stafford Clark’s original company in 1988. 25 years on, Ann has teamed up with another Next Stage director, John Matthews, to make her dream a reality. Ann directs Our Country’s Good and John is directing The Recruiting Officer with acclaimed Next Stage actors participating in an ambitious double bill which once again gives Bath audiences the chance, on alternate days, to see Our Country’s Good and The Recruiting Officer as presented by the convict cast of the First Fleet!
