It’s not the weekend when we remember the end of school or the beginning of summer and all the fun that we will have on the lake or around the grill. Instead, it is the weekend when we pause to remember all the men and women who gave their lives for our freedom. It is a weekend when we say thank you to all those men and women who recognized not just their calling to serve their country, but the gifts God gave them in this service. We also remember in our thoughts and prayers all those families who paid the price by losing their loved ones who served our country. This weekend we also celebrate Pentecost when the Holy Spirit was poured out upon Jesus’ disciples, the very same Holy Spirit that Jesus said “will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears” (John 16:13). Through the power of the Holy Spirit we see the disciples do amazing things from healing people and casting out demons to proclaiming the Good News to all those who don’t know about Christ’s great love for us. So on this Memorial/Pentecost Weekend what are we called to do? I believe God asks us to rejoice in the fact that no matter what we do God has given us His Holy Spirit to lead us, guide us, and provide us with all we need to live out His calling for us to help others know and experience the love and freedom that Christ has made possible for us. One great way this summer we are able to live out our calling through the power of the Holy Spirit is to get involved with the weekly Wednesday Night Dinners on the lawn. Join other disciples from St. John’s and our neighbors, residents of Georgetown Apartments, at 6:00 p.m. on the church lawn to share Christ’s love over dinner, fellowship, and caring conversations. May God bless you through the power of the Holy Spirit so that all may come to know Him through you! Welcome to St. John’s Lutheran Church on this Pentecost Weekend as we gather around Word and Sacrament to celebrate Christ’s resurrection and be fed by our Triune God. We are glad you are here! If you do not yet have a church home in Springfield and are interested in becoming part of St. John’s, we invite you to visit with one of our pastors. When speaking to his disciples before his death, Jesus referred to the Holy Spirit as “the Helper” and described the difference the Spirit would make in their lives and in the world. On this Pentecost Weekend, we pray for God’s Holy Spirit to work in our lives, drawing us ever deeper in our relationship with Christ and with one another.

Outreach and MissionCommunity Cookouts on the Lawn- Starting June 3 we are inviting all disciples at St. John’s to join us in connecting with our neighbors at the Georgetown Apartments over food and fellowship. One way you can be a part of this great opportunity is through bringing a side dish to share each Wednesday night through August 12. Another way you, your family, your friends, and even your small group can be a part of this is by hosting a Wednesday night. This involves preparing the main dish and serving as host and hostesses to our disciples and guests. St. John’s will provide the funds for the main dish, drinks, and paper products so you don’t have to worry about the funding! If you or your group would like to host a Community Cookout on the Lawn, please contact Carolyn Isham at 544.2286 or [email protected] Trip- There are still some spots available for the 2015 Marion, VA Cross-Generational Mission trip!
