(Living your Passion by doing the work) About Paeloko Located in heart of Waiheʻe, Maui, Paeloko is home to the fiber of coconut husks used to build the cordage to lasso the Sun from the Legend of Maui Snaring the Sun. In the legend, the Demi-god Maui is the son of Hina who is a master kapa (traditional cloth) maker, uses the resources of ʻike (knowledge), ke kumu (native plants), and ka lala (native arts). Maui cut down the coconut trees from Paeloko, and gathered the fibers of coconut husks in great quantity and he manufactured the resources into strong cord to lasso the sun and slow down its movement...so his Mom, Hina would have more daylight to dry her kapa. Paeloko preserves Native Hawaiian culture and traditions by providing hands-on learning opportunities through indigenous ancestral arts, culture, and language to the children and community of Maui Nui.     Paeloko offers opportunities for everyone to join and learnthrough our hands-on engagement opportunities based on NativeHawaiian values.

    Paeloko offers workshops, programs, activities and more to avariety of audiences in the Maui Community including: Pre-Kindergarten-12th grade, Higher Education, and professionaldevelopment workshops for state, local and non-profitorganizations.

    Our PK-12 community include Pūnana Leo O Maui, Kula KaiapuniO Maui (Hawaiian Immersion Schools) and Maui county private andpublic Department of Education schools. For our higher educationarena, we serve programs at the University of Hawaiʻi MauiCollege, along with extending collaboration to our neighboringislands college systems and national colleges .

    Jan-Feb 2017 - Lisa Baybayan, the 2017 honorary awardee, is recognized in this article for her initiative withher staff at the Hyatt Regency Maui. Baybayan implemented a professional development workshop with anextended invite to the Hyattʻs guests. Both parties had an opportunity to attend a workshop held at her family-owned educational site, Paeloko.

    2011 - Two of the four family owners of Paeloko, Lorilei Ishikawa and Uʻi Nahoʻolewa are recognized fortheir excellence and continued contributions to the art of kapa. The article recognizes revered womenin the art of kapa and their collaboration with the 2012 Merrie Monarch.

    July 2013 - This article presents a past affiliate, Liko Aʻe, A Native Hawaiian Scholarship program, whodedicated years of services to Native Hawaiian students for opportunities to participate in malama 'āinaactivities, community service workdays, mentorship, and cultural workshops.
