Anyone who’s ever opened the Bible to its first page has been invited to consider creation. Genesis addresses the fundamental human question of “Why are we here?”
Every human society has had at least one answer to this question. In our own pluralistic culture, multiple answers are available. One common answer proclaims that there is no Why; existence is simply chaotic and meaningless. A second common answer is that existence is whatever we make of it. Any “Why” is our own creation.
The Judeo-Christian account of God’s story begins with God in action. There is not, as might be expected, a history of God detailing His origins and credentials. Rather, we begin with God being Creator. We are told right away that this is the story of a God who does things. There is purpose.
The Genesis text has often been used in attempts to answer questions completely outside its original meaning. One unfortunate side effect of that project is that we have focused on questions of How rather than Why. It is ultimately far less important for us to understand the details of God’s creative process than to understand it’s overall shape and goal. To ask the Why of creation is to ask several related questions:
What is the Creator like?
What is the creation’s purpose?
Where is the creation headed?
What’s my place in it?
As the Christian story unfolds, answers to these questions are provided. But those answers will be most coherent when we see them in the context of the original question of creation, and the Biblical answer.
A reading of Genesis has emerged in recent years (primarily from the work of John H. Walton) that views God as acting to create something separate from Himself, yet within which He will dwell. In other words, God is creating a Temple. The original readers of Genesis would expect a Temple to contain an image to represent the Deity. In this reading of Genesis, the humans placed in this Temple are certainly not gods, but are intended to be re-presenting God to the creation. They are
intended to be thinking and acting as God intends, reflecting His Glory into the creation, and reflecting its worship back to the Creator.
Whether one embraces this reading, Genesis clearly shows God pushing back chaos to make a place in which humans can work and worship. And God pronounces this world to be good. Very good. Genesis, I think, serves as a mission statement telling us the creation has design and intention. It is supposed to be a particular way, and we humans have an important role in that. We are here to reflect the Creator’s divine intent.
But when we fail to grasp that, we mistakenly view our existence as for our self, and our purpose becomes distorted. It is to that Fall that we will turn next month. Sam

It’s time to begin thinking about our Christmas shoeboxes. Gift-filled shoeboxes are used to demonstrate
God's love in a tangible way to children in need. Locust Grove has
participated in this ministry for many
years.
The plan this year is a little different. The
shoeboxes filled by our congregation will
be delivered directly to the children we
sponsor in Chuluc, Guatemala and to the
local children who receive our Lunches of Love food bags.
Shoeboxes may be filled with small toys, candy, hygiene items, and school supplies.
If you would prefer to donate money and let us do the
shopping and fill the boxes for you, we’ll be happy to do
that. Just designate a donation to LGBC and note it for
Children's Christmas boxes.
If you have any questions please contact the church office
at 256-379-2813.

BSA Troop 228 Busily Preparing for an Active Fall Season
Boy Scout Troop 228, sponsored by Locust Grove Baptist
Church, is back in full fall scouting activities after completing a
busy summer, which included summer camp at Camp
Sequoyah, learning numerous survival and life skills, merit
badge and rank requirements, and participating in several
community service activities. Sixteen Troop 228 Scouts and 4
leaders participated in summer camp.
The Troop’s Fall schedule includes many activities, some that
Locust Grove members may wish to participate in or observe.
First on the schedule is “Parent Connect Evening”, a planned
activity for Scouts to give their parents and friends an overview
of what they accomplished during the summer months. The event will be held in the Locust Grove
Gym at 7 PM on Monday, October 1. It will also be open to guests who may have an interest. It will
also be a splendid opportunity for boys (ages 12-17 years) and parents to check out Scouting, and
for boys and girls (ages 14-20 years) to check out Venturing Scouting.
Then, in October/November, the Scouts will conduct their fundraiser for their Troop operation
expenses, a Pork Butt cookout and sales. Tickets are available now. Ask a Scout or Leader for more
details.
In addition to these events, all of the Scouts will be diligently working on the requirements for their
advancements in preparation for the big event, the “Court of Honor” scheduled for November 8th in
the Rock Chapel. Then on December 16th, a special “Eagle Court of Honor” is planned where two
contenders for the Eagle Award will be presented. This event is also planned to be an “Eagle
Homecoming” for all Eagles, young and old, to convene at the event and celebrate. Guests are also
invited to these events. The Scouts and their leaders would love to show their Church sponsor what
they are doing to earn their place in our society.
Troop 228 is grateful to Locust Grove for sponsoring our Troop and we want our Sponsor to be
proud of our performance as young men and women in today’s society. We are some 42 Scouts
strong and we’d be happy to have interested members of Locust Grove check us out.
