As we follow the news and face the challenges each day offers, it is only natural to wonder why certain things are happening. We might question the pandemic, an infection that has touched millions of people, killed hundreds of thousands and threatens economies around the world. The unpleasant reality of racial inequality and social unrest can no longer be ignored and is calling out for personal and systemic changes. On an individual level, we might be experiencing health issues, financial insecurity, family struggles, isolation or the death of a loved one. There may be other concerns that weigh on your hearts and minds. Often the “why” of evil and human suffering is answered slowly and much later. Biblical wisdom suggests that we focus on how we respond to these difficulties.

When it comes to the COVID19 pandemic, we can choose to make a positive difference by following the science-based guidelines: physical distancing (6’ or more), frequent handwashing and wearing masks. Yes, it is a sacrifice and can seem like unnecessary burdens, but these steps can help lessen the risk of more widespread infection and death. Perhaps the biggest challenge is to tune down the rhetoric, de-politicize the response and truly listen to others, from the heart. Imagine how our situation might change if we tried to work together for the common good … becoming informed (not overly so) of what is known and unknown about the disease presently, separating the issue from our political views/party, and finding ways to lessen the burden on others. Are we safely staying in contact with others and making sure no one is too isolated? If financially secure, can we support programs that assist those in need? Of course, remember to pray about the pandemic, seeking patience and understanding, and interceding for those suffering and providing care. “God, help us!” is a simple and effective prayer, especially as we seek a vaccine or effective treatment.

A pandemic by itself would be more than enough, but we also are being asked to face the history and nature of race relations in our nation. Most, at least many, of us might be tempted to say, “I am not racist.” Nor are we racially “color blind.” I continue to learn more about our nation’s history and how people of color have been treated since its beginning. This can be a graced time to “stop, listen & learn” from people who are different from us and don’t have the privileges we take for granted. Some want to politicize this issue, too, from various perspectives; we can resist this temptation and strive to address the unjust dimensions of our society and systems. Even if we disagree about other topics, we can still search for a common understanding of what needs to change and concrete steps toward the goal. Take this issue to prayer, too, and ask God to help you see what is happening from God’s perspective. We might need to request a more open heart and less defensive stance. In these and other issues, we can always take the “why” to God in prayer, but don’t forget the “how” of our response.

Missionary Co-op Special Collection for the Archdiocese of Juba, South Sudan.

Last year the Archdiocese of Juba in South Sudan celebrated 100 years of love of God since

the missionaries set their foot on that land. What a beautiful gift to celebrate. It was a

celebration of blessings and growth amidst its country's challenges. God shared Himself

generation after generation, in the scriptures of old. We study history and the New

Testament scriptures to discover that same giving spirit, only then more clearly seen in the

person of Jesus Christ. We tend to look back and think in terms of ‘what was’. Yet, when the

church continues to manifest itself, it can only be seen as ‘Jesus Christ is alive today in our midst.’ That's what the

Resurrection is all about - Jesus is alive today.

The odds are not good, but the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Juba, which is the metropolitan for ecclesiastical

province of Juba in South Sudan, finds itself in this critical juncture. The Archbishop wrote, “I can see the effects of

the crisis on the South Sudanese people I serve.” The Archdiocese’s fourteen parishes and Terekeka Pastoral Region

offers a ray of hope. The war, in its six years, has left a devastating impact. Yet, despite the staggering challenges in

South Sudan, capital of Juba, the Archdiocese still sees a nation thirsty for spiritual growth and the Sacrament to be

administered.

The Archdiocese remains committed to God’s call to care for those entrusted to her care. The priests and Religious

of the Archdiocese of Juba remain central to restoring hope for the Christian Community of the Archdiocese. Their

compassionate care for the Christian community is the face of the church to the world. The civil war and food

insecurity in South Sudan are causing havoc. The priests and the religious of the Archdiocese need food and basics

to let them carry their mission. There are not enough Christian community members available with the necessary

resources to care for the local church.

Ultimately, the core of our communion in the church flows from our being joined by Jesus in the communion of life

in the Trinity: Father, Son and Spirit, and in our baptismal call to share in Jesus’ mission. We are asking you to

prayerfully contribute what you can. Please write “Mission Co-op” in the memo line of your check. Thank you!

The Diocese of Winona-Rochester is close to announcing a plan for schools to be open for the 2020-21 school year. A task force has been working on guide-lines for a safe return to school for our students, staff, and families, as the health and well-being of our school community remains our utmost concern. As we receive more details from DOW-R we will be sharing them with our families and the Loyola community.

Due to the fact that we canceled our in-person Kindergarten Round-up this spring, we have created a virtual Kindergarten Round-up! Please check out “Welcome to Kindergarten” at www.loyolacatholicschool.org
