Upcoming Probable Starters & Schedule
TODAYS GAME: The M-Braves take on the Jacksonville Suns in the third of a five game series at Trustmark Park on Saturday night, sending right-hander Rob Whalen to the hill against right-hander Asher Wojciechowski.
LAST TIME OUT: Victor Mateo pitched a solid 5 1/3 innings to pick up the win as Mis-sissippi evened the series with a 4-2 win over Jacksonville. Mateo allowed just two runs, one earned, on five hits, working around four walks. Jacksonville scored a run in the first on a JT Riddle single, but Mississippi came right back with two in the second on an RBI single from Camargo and a sacrifice fly by Mateo for a 2-1 lead. The Braves added two more in the fourth with RBI knocks from Willians Astudillo and Camargo. Jacksonville threatened a comeback in the fifth, loading the bases with nobody out and bringing home a run on a double play, but Mateo got out of it to maintain the lead. Madison Younginer nailed down his fifth save, stranding the tying run on base in the ninth. Patrick Johnson took his fourth loss, allowing all four runs, two earned, on eight hits over four innings.
AFTER THE INTERMISSION: The M-Braves have been a second-half team dating back to the earliest days of the teams history, finishing with a better second-half record in eight consecutive seasons. All time, the club is 377-377 (.500) after the All-Star Break, as opposed to 399-434 (.479) in the first half.
A NIGHT WITH THE STARS: The Mississippi Braves are coming off hosting the Southern League All-Star Game for the first time since 2007, with the South Division earning a 5-1 win over the North Division Tuesday night at Trustmark Park thanks to a couple of Pensacola Blue Wahoos. Outfielder and MVP Phillip Ervin slugged a grand slam off Smokies pitcher Brad Markey in the fifth to put the game away 5-0, while RHP Barrett Astin picked up the win for the South. For the Braves, Dansby Swanson finished the game 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Dustin Peterson went 0-for-4.
A WHALE OF A TALE: Rob Whalen has posted a string of fine starts to carry the M-Braves rotation into late-June. The right-hander is 4-1 with a 1.17 ERA in his last nine starts (7 ER in 54 IP), dragging his ERA down to 2.16, good for fifth-best in the Southern League.
HIS NAME IS DUSTIN PETERSON: Dustin Petersons 18-game on-base streak came to an end on Thursday night with an 0-4 showing. The M-Braves outfielder had his 13-game hit streak ended on Saturday night with an 0-for-2 day. Over the hit streak, Peterson batted .423 (22-52) with a .466 on-base percentage (5 BB, 0 HBP, 1 SF) and slugging .638 (4 2B, 0 3B, 2 HR). Petersons RBI streak ended at 6 games on Thursday night, falling three short of Seth Lomans 2014 record of 9 games, set June 21-29, 2014.
SMORGASBORD OF SWATS: Dansby Swansons solo home run on Thursday night was the 38th team home run of the season, matching the 2015 full-season total of 38. The club is on pace for 75 home runs, which would be 13 shy of the teams all-time record set at 88 in the championship season of 2008. Dustin Peterson and Jacob Schrader led the team in the first half with seven each.
SOLO BOMBS: The M-Braves have 38 home runs this year, but 29 have been solo shots, with seven two-run homers and two three-run home runs. Levi Hyams hit the first home run with multiple people on base on May 23 at Mobile, a three-run homer to give the M-Braves a 3-0 lead. In comparison, opponents have 29 home runs against the Braves, with 13 solo, 11 two-run, 4 three-run, and 1 grand slam.
