It is hard to believe we are moving into the last month of the year. December is a great month to be around the MAC because of the variety of opportunities to enjoy the holi-day season. When it comes to celebrating special occasions, nobody does it better than our Club. Delicious dining coupled with unrivaled service in a special venue are the ingredients that make the MAC experience so unique. No time of year showcases this better than the holiday season. From the Christ-mas tree and train display at the Downtown Clubhouse to the spectacular decorations at the West Clubhouse, the MAC shines this time of year. Take the stress out of holiday preparations by enjoying meals with friends and family at your Club. Whether it is an event for the kids like Breakfast with Santa and Family Night or a holiday dinner on Christmas or New Year’s, there is something for everyone at the Club. Make reservations now, and enjoy one of these events. In addition to these staple events, new this year, the MAC will even help take the stress out of holiday shopping. On the mornings of Dec. 5 and 12, the West Clubhouse will offer daycare service for little ones up to four years of age while parents finish shopping and wrapping. Another great December tradition at the Club is the annual Jack Buck Sports Awards presented by Maryville University. The 45th annual dinner sold out quickly, but the pre-mier sports banquet, hosted by MAC member Tom Ackerman, can be enjoyed on KMOX Radio and on Fox Sports Midwest. The MAC has a long history of honoring some of the biggest sports legends, and this year is no exception. We will honor Olympic sensation and local Blue T.J. Oshie. Other honorees for the evening include former St. Louis Foot-ball Cardinal and NFL Hall of Famer Dan Dierdorf, former baseball Cardinal outfielder Jim Edmonds, and professional soccer player Brad Davis.

Amidst all the great dining and celebrating, you and your family have plenty of opportu-nities to stay active during the holidays and into the New Year. The Club’s junior athletic programs continue to grow and prosper. The diversity of youth sports offerings and the quality of instruction is unmatched in St. Louis. Stop by the athletic desk or call to find out more about the many athletic opportu-nities available for kids. Also, if you enjoyed one too many treats from the dessert table, numerous fitness options are available head-ing into 2015. The MAC has a great team of trainers and fitness programs to assist. In this issue, pay special attention to the fitness class schedule and details about the Club’s Weight Loss Challenge. If your goal is to be more fit in 2015, the MAC athletics department is the place to start. On the business side of things, through two months, the finances of the Club con-tinue to be off to a strong start. Operating income is well ahead of budget thus far, and the Club is seeing very strong numbers in the areas of membership, hotel revenues and the tennis program. We look forward to con-tinued financial success at the Club for the 2014-2015 fiscal year. Sneaking a peak further into next year, I want to draw attention to a couple of exciting events. The MAC Dance Club and Charitable Society for Children will host an evening of dining and dancing with a Tribute to Elvis on Jan. 23. The following month, make plans to attend the Foundations’ Gala. This year’s event promises to be the best ever. If you attended in the past, I am confident you will return for what is quickly becoming a new MAC tradition. If you have not attended, I strongly encourage you to enjoy a memorable evening of Club spirit and camaraderie. Look for more details over the next couple of months. This year’s event will focus on the Preservation, Athletic and Art Foundations. These foundations have been a big part of the Club’s success and will continue to be in the future. Finally, I want to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season. It is a special month for fun times with family and friends, and I hope you will make the MAC part of your celebrations. I have a challenge for all of you history buffs and St. Louis natives: What is the oldest building in Downtown St. Louis’ central business district that is still occupied by its original tenant and still exists for the same purpose in which it was built? At a Preservation Founda-tion meeting last week, we came to the conclusion that it might very possibly be the Missouri Athletic Club at 405 Washington Avenue, which was origi-nally built in 1903. Is there another or-ganization that has been continuously rooted in Downtown St. Louis longer? If you know of one, please let me know just because we are curious. Regardless, our wonderful historic building exem-plifies the rich history, strong values, and lasting traditions that comprise the MAC and our mission. Our Pres-ervation Foundation provides a large portion of the funds used to rehab and ensure the building is here for future generations to love, respect and enjoy. Since 1903, our mission has re-

mained constant, but broaden slight-ly over time to encompass families throughout the region, specifically those near our West Clubhouse. Un-derstanding the interpretation of our mission is important because it sets the tone for our strategic direction and ties directly to the areas where our energies are focused today as they were from the beginning. Our mission: “The mission of the Missouri Athletic Club is to be the premier athletic, dining and social club for business, professional and civic leaders and their families in the St. Louis Region.“ In preparation for our Preservation Foundation meeting, I was digging through an old planning file from 1993 when I came across the graph below. It really hit home with me. Clearly, not a lot has changed. Our mission today is essentially the same as it was in 1993 when this graph was developed. You may be tired of hearing this, but critical to the ongoing success of our Club are our Foundations. Our Foun-dations’ Boards are on a mission of their own and meet regularly to discuss short and long-term strategic plans. The Sports Foundation enables us to create “world class” events such the Hermann Trophy and Sports Personal-ity of the Year and to host events that benefit the Charitable Society for Chil-dren. Wait until you hear some of their long-range plans. The Foundation for the Arts main-tains the role of conserving and restor-ing the MAC’s art collection. Currently, this Board is in the process of selecting

locations for three painting that they recently restored: Venice Canal, Moon and Mist, and Monk. They will be up shortly, and we encourage you to come and enjoy. The agenda going forward is exciting as well. As noted, our Preservation Founda-tion works to maintain our fabulous 110-year-old historical building. This is a rewarding challenge because of the tremendous scope of work required to ensure the legacy of the Club for future generations. Our annual request for contributions to the Club’s employee holiday fund also results in a financial distribution to the Foundations and the Charitable Society for Children. Your contribution to these areas is greatly and sincerely appreciated. Please remember that this is totally voluntary on your part. Another great way you can sup-port our Foundations is by planning to attend The Foundations’ Gala on Friday, Feb. 13, 2015 with your sweet-heart. I’m truly excited for this event, which promises to be the party of the year. More details are on the way, but for now, circle Feb. 13 on your calendar and plan to attend. I’m also pleased to share that our fiscal year is off to a great start. Our operating performance is slightly ahead of plan, but we need to stay focused on our goals for the remainder of the year to continue in this path of suc-cess. We count on your participation and full use of our fabulous facilities to make this happen. Think about this for a minute: if every member had just one more lunch at the Club per month with a guest, our third bucket revenues would increase by over $1,000,000 – the power of the many and my ask of ya’ll (as we say in Tennessee), our awesome members. As we all count our blessings at this time of year, I want to wish you and your family the most wonderful holi-day season and the happiest, healthiest New Year. Thank you for allowing me to be part of this incredible place.

2009 Vintage Cabernet Sauvignon Star Lane Vineyard, Santa Ynez Valley, California Star Lane Cabernet is from the estate vineyard located at the far eastern end of the Santa Ynez Valley in the new “Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara” appellation. Havingwarmer temperatures than other appellations, makes this wine ideal for Bordeaux varietals. The combina-tion of varying elevation and low nutrient soils in this vineyard produces grapes of notable intensity and balance. After 20 months of aging, the final blend is assembled to enhance the aromatics and promote a full and satisfying mouth feel. A pretty garnet color in the glass, this wine seduces with its initial aromas of black plums, figs, and cinnamon. Layers of pepper, cola, cocoa and hints of extracted boysenberry intrigue the palate. While the wine presents a firm and focused structure the mid-palate is supple and the finish is silky and lithe.

Hello from the Kitchen of Executive Chef BartWell, where has the time gone? I feel as if I just sat down to write last year’s letter for the holiday season. By the time you read this letter, we will be well into the holiday season. Both of our clubs are decked out with all the trimmings and ready for the fellowship of our members at many Club events and holiday parties. Thank you for making this truly a memorable holiday for our staff. Let me share with you some recent happenings within the cu-linary department. Earlier this year, we participated in the St. An-drews Third Annual Derby Brunch Fundraiser at the Magic Mansion where we received the best dish award. This event was followed by Chef’s Night Out at the Westborough Country Club, which was a great night. In August, I competed in the Great American Seafood Cook Off in New Orleans. In the first round, I won first prize in the mystery basket category. On the final day, I placed in the top five of the competition. The Missouri Athletic Club was also well repre-sented at the St. Vincent Home for Children fundraiser. In October, we helped kickoff the St. Louis Foodbank Taste of the NFL that has raised more than $700,000 in the past couple years to purchase and distribute food to local food banks in the St. Louis area. On a personal note, I challenged and completed a Tough Mudder Event, a 10.4-mile obstacle course. I enjoy supporting different charitable foundations and representing the Missouri Athletic Club in the community. We look forward to taking care of your culinary needs from a great new burger in the Jack Buck Grille that is a mix of Wagyu, ten-derloin and sirloin to the lunch buffet in the Sportsman’s and all of the holiday meals yet to be explored. Thank you, and I look forward to seeing you around the Club. May your holiday season be extra special this year with your family and loved ones.

MEET ToMMY RICHARDSTommy is a native of Bend, Oregon. He played four years of college baseball at Wash-ington State University in the Pacific-12 Confer-ence. After college,

the Baltimore Orioles drafted him in the 24th round where he played for a year before playing winter-ball for the Perth Heat in Western Australia. Tommy played for the Gateway Grizzlies in 2014 and still aspires to continue his baseball career. Furthermore, he is a graduate assistant coach at the Lindenwood Uni-versity-Belleville where he is pursuing his MBA.

The MAC goes beyond sport-specific skills to help all young athletes improve their overall strength and fitness, build-ing the foundation for lifelong health. Studies have shown time and again that children who are physically active, whether through sports or individual fitness, are more likely to stay active into their teen years and adulthood. Both the Downtown and West Club-houses offer a diverse staff of personal trainers equipped to serve not only adult members but also teens.Speed & Agility Clinics: High school athletes can improve their eye-hand coordination, footwork, lateral speed, explosive movement and rotational strength with weekly clinics at the West Clubhouse. Held at 4:30 p.m. on Tues-days, these classes cost $15 per session.

On Oct. 29, Saint Louis University men’s basketball coach Jim Crews attended an annual luncheon at the Missouri Athletic Club prior to the start of the 2014-15 season. Last season, the Billikens won a school-record 19 games in a row, posted an 11-1 road record, collected the program’s sec-ond-consecutive Atlantic 10 title and earned a top-10 ranking for the first

time in 40 years. The season ended on a high note when the Billikens came from behind to beat North Carolina State in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The seniors on the team achieved these accomplishments, which leaves many wondering how this season will compare. Coach Crews seemed unconcerned. He reiterated that the goal for all

college students is to graduate, and his seniors now have the opportunity to pursue new challenges. He also sees great opportunity in his current team. Additionally, SLU Director of Athletics, Chris May, attended the luncheon along with MAC’s Governor Troy Robertson, who is a former bas-ketball Billiken from the class of 2000.

If you’re attending a Billikens basketball game this season, use the Missouri Athletic Club’s shuttle for convenient transportation. Avoid the hassle of parking and walking through the cold to get into the arena.

Blues forward T.J. Oshie became an international sensation following his performance at the 2014 Olympics. He single-handedly outscored Russia in a shootout cashing in on four of the six attempts he took. Oshie’s breakout performance has earned him the 2014 Missouri Athletic Club Sports Personality of the Year award. Football Cardinal great Dan Dierdorf, who earlier this year retired from network broadcasting after 30 years, will receive the Burnes/Broeg award. Chaminade graduate Brad Davis, who currently stars for the Houston Dynamo and played for the U.S. national team at the 2014 World Cup, will receive the Hometown Hero award. Mizzou basketball great Steve Stipanovich will receive the Legends award.

The Missouri Athletic Club has been home to college soccer’s version of the Heisman Trophy since 1986. Most of the biggest names in American soccer have come to the Club to claim the prestigious crystal soccer ball trophy, presented annually to the top male and female collegiate players. The jerseys of the past Hermann Trophy winners, including Mia Hamm, Kris-tine Lilly, Claudio Reyna and Alexi Lalas, are on permanent display in the Sportsman’s Club. Last year’s event was a night to remember with Taylor Twellman returning to St. Louis as the banquet’s featured speaker. The top three male and female

finalists will be invited to the MAC for the banquet. The finalists will be announced in mid-December. Do not get shutout this year – make reservations now before this celebration of the most popular game in the world sells out. MAC Tennis Pro Becomes an IronmanClub tennis pro, Faycal Ibnabdeljalil, recently put his conditioning to the test by competing in an Ironman Triathlon consisting of a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bicycle ride, and 26.2 marathon run completed consecutively. He proudly wore the MAC logo while competing on an exhaustingly hot 90-plus degree day. He completed the grueling contest in 13 hours and 53 minutes.

ABouT FAYCALFaycal was born in Casablanca, Morocco and started playing tennis at age seven. He was ranked one of the top junior play-ers in Morocco, and then played college tennis in California, Texas, and finally in St. Louis, where he received a full scholar-ship. He also competed on a professional level in Professional Satellite Events in France and Spain. Faycal has been certified by USPTA since 2004. He founded the Tennis Training Academy (TTA), and was a Junior Program Director at Vetta Sports from 2002-10.

Deborah A. Williams is this month’s featured artist in the MAC Art Gallery at the Downtown Clubhouse. Her art, including photographic, mixed media and pastel images, reflects her love for architecture and land-scapes and serves as a reminder of the rapidly disappear-ing landmarks around us. A founding member of the Gateway Pastel Artists, her work is included in numerous private and corporate collections and is also exhibited at the Green Door Art Gallery in Webster Groves, the St. Louis University Museum of Art, the Woman’s Institute and Gallery in New Harmony, Ind., and the Creative Art Gallery in St. Louis. Deborah enjoys painting on location, “en plein air,” and has won numerous awards at plein air events in Augusta, Mo., wine country and Kansas City, and she frequently paints with the Missouri Plein Air Painters Association. Meet Joy Holdmeier “I am very excited to be on staff as the Youth Programs Manager. I look forward to continuing and improving kids camps and have plans to develop many new programs. I am eager to meet the children and parents, and I welcome their thoughts and ideas.”In late October, Joy Holdmeier joined the Missouri Athletic Club as Youth Program Manager. In this position, Joy is responsible for Camp MAC, the Club’s Holiday and Spring Break Camps, and the development, promotion and evaluation of current and new youth programs. Joy graduated from Lindenwood University with a bachelor’s degree in physical education and sports management. She is a certified personal trainer, fitness instructor, and pre-school and elementary PE teacher. Joy brings more than 14 years of fitness industry experience to the po-sition, including Fitness Director for a state-of-the-art health club, Athletic Director for a private club, and Franchise Owner for a mom and baby fitness franchise. Club’s Trunk ‘R Treat event.

Parents, with the help of their

children, transformed their

vehicles into funny, scary, clever,

and festive Halloween mobiles.

Families in costume enjoyed

Halloween-themed food, activi-

ties, and plenty of candy. Marsh-

mallows roasted on an open

fire pit, and candy strewn from a

piñata. In keeping with

St. Louis tradition, children had

time to perfect their jokes

before the holiday.

The event was a treat for all.

Each year, the Missouri Athletic Club partners with the Rotary Club of St. Louis to honor our nation’s veterans for their service. A full house packed the Missouri Room to hear featured guest speaker Major General Susan A. Davidson, Commanding Gen-eral, Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command. Robert Fulstone was recognized as the MAC’s 2014 Honored Veteran of the Year. Fulstone won numerous honors during his service in Vietnam, but it has been his service since his active duty days that has set him apart. His efforts helped secure the funding for the USO facility at Lambert Airport and a mobile USO unit. Local artist Harry Weber received the first St. Louis Area Veteran Achievement Award. Following nine years of duty as a Navy officer, Weber has used his artistic tal-ents to help civilians better understand the duty and challenges faced by our military.

MAC Rod and Gun Club Win Championship

On Friday, Oct. 24, twenty-two members of the Missouri Athletic Club’s Rod and Gun Club competed in the 2014 Interclub Sporting Clays Championship and won for the third consecutive year. The winning team comprised of Chris Hyams, Todd

Keske, Henry Schwetye, James Schwetye, and Mike Luth shot 445 out of 500, which is highest score in the history of Interclub. The second place score was 384 out of 500. The championship was hosted at Strathal-byn Farms Club.

On Oct. 22, twenty-two people with the Lunch & Tour Group took the train from the Kirkwood Station to Washington, Mo. for lunch at The Blue Duck along the Missouri River. To accommodate the train schedule, this excursion did not include a tour. However, the group enjoyed a spectac-ular view of fall colors while en route. Next, on Nov. 7, the Lunch & Tour Group took the MAC shuttle to Godfrey, Ill. for holiday shopping and lunch at the Josephine Tea Room. The Group will get together again on January 30 to exchange/re-gift items received during the holidays that were not

On Thursday, Oct. 30, about 70 members and guests attended the Whiskey War events sponsored by the Mark Twain Society. Available NowIn late August, MAC member Carl Win-ters visited the Four Roses’ Warehouse and Bottling Facility located in Cox Creek, Ky. to select the 2014 MAC Single Barrel Bourbon. Four Roses was named the Bourbon Distillery of the Year in 2012 and 2013. At the facility, Carl met with Jim Rutledge, Master Distiller, Mandy Vance, Single Barrel Project Manager and Dan Gardner, Sales Director. They sampled 10 barrels of Four Roses bourbon. Each barrel’s profile, taste and ABV (alcohol by volume) were distinct. From the tasting, Carl and team narrowed the selection down to two barrels for the MAC. While both barrels meet the national standards of bourbon, one barrel has a 75% corn, 20% rye and 5% malted barley mix; the other has a 60% corn, 35% rye and 5% malted barley mix. One offers a softer butterscotch and vanilla profile, and the other barrel offers a slight spice finish. Both use the same proprietary yeasts, giving off an herbal essence nose. The bottles produced from these barrels have specific custom labels distin-guishing the uniqueness of each barrel. Additionally, one is marked as the Mis-souri Athletic Cub barrel and the other is marked as a Mark Twain Society barrel.

1903Just a few months after the MAC opened its doors, Club athletes made their debut at a track event at a huge indoor meet held at the Coliseum in December. That same month, water polo was intro-duced at a regular weekly aquatic meet. The game was practically unknown to St. Louisans, but quickly generated interest.

1919It was around this time that the practice of organizing “name tables” for lun-cheon in the main dining room became popular. Already established for some time had been the “Wall Street Table.” Other tables included the “Gym Table” and another was the “Oil and Gas Table.” These were made up of men who gather at these tables regularly for lunch. Today, the tradition continues in the Sportsman’s Club.

1942The 5th Floor was wholeheartedly in the war effort by December. It had inaugu-rated a physical fitness program for offi-cers of the Armed Forces – Army, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard and the FBI. The course was held every evening in both swimming and physical fitness. Other clubs around the country soon followed the MAC lead in cooperating with the armed services.

1964The MAC celebrated the New Year and St. Louis’ bicentennial year with a festive celebration in the ballroom. The MAC New Year’s celebration was seen on KSD-TV, which aired 40 minutes of coverage from the Club.
