WHAT WE DO Research Development at MIT is a unit within the Office of the Vice President for Research tasked with strategically leveraging resources to increase MIT's research competitiveness.

The Research Development team works directly with faculty, Institute administration, strategic partners and funders to facilitate research program funding.

Research Development's role includes:

• Leadership and coordination of multi-investigator and multi-institutional proposals and strategic initiatives

• Management of the campus Limited Submission Competitions

• Identifying and disseminating funding resources and training materials

• Working directly with faculty to identify and respond to funding opportunities

• Serving as the VPR liaison to the Office of Foundation relations and other entities on and off campus

WHO WE ARE

Jacob E. Levin, Ph.D. Director of Research Development

For over two decades, Dr. Levin has been working with faculty to identify and secure funding to support their research. A founding Board Member and Past-President

of NORDP, he has served as grant reviewer for agencies such as the NSF and NIH, and is a Fellow of the AAAS. Dr. Levin received his BA in physics and math from Cornell University, an MA in physics and a PhD in molecular and cell biology from UC Berkeley, and was a postdoctoral fellow in the MIT department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences. Cathy A. Borgesen Assistant Director

Cathy brings a deep knowledge of research funding and management to the RD team. She manages over 150 limited submission opportunities annually, and has been the de facto central

point of contact on campus for the 10 Advanced Manufacturing Institutes of which MIT is a member. Ms. Borgesen holds a BA in sociology from UMass Amherst, an MA in sociology from Emory University, and a Graduate Certificate in research administration from Emmanuel College.

LIMITED SUBMISSIONS

MIT Vice President for Research Maria T. Zuber (VPR) is responsible for administering the application/nomination process for limited submission funding opportunities. On behalf of the VPR, Research Development will announce a deadline and requirements for an internal review and selection of applications, and manage the competition. Some MIT internal competition nominations are limited to Department Head/Lab Director recommendations only.

COMPLEX PROPOSAL COORDINATION

The Research Development team works with faculty members and groups to develop and submit large, complex proposals that align with MIT’s strategic research priorities. We can:

• Facilitate team building • Host meetings and working groups • Provide needed support throughout the

development process • Connect relevant stakeholders • Identify potential collaborators • Interface with MIT leadership • Coordinate with research administration and

other campus offices • Provide scientific and administrative proposal
