DYNAMIC EXTENSION

1MITEL SERIES X

1. OverviewThis document will serve as an overview of keyfeatures in the Mitel® Series X software launch. Ourmain topic of focus for this document will center onMitel Dynamic Extension.

You will learn how Dynamic Extension will greatly enhance your mobility either in the office as a corridor warrior or as a traveling road warrior by transforming any direct dial number into your extension.

You will learn how Dynamic Extension’s flexibilitylends itself to more nimble business continuitysolutions by allowing users to log in anywhere andmake and receive calls as if they are in their office.

2. What is Dynamic ExtensionDynamic Extension provides by-directional callrouting so you can always receive your calls nomatter your location as well as originate callsthrough the system allowing you to present a singleidentity and leverage Mitel IP-PBX in-call features(e.g. conferencing) from any external device.

Dynamic Extension works over any PSTN trunk suchas SIP, PRI or even analog C.O. lines. For trunks thatdo not provide supervisory signaling, DynamicExtension uses ‘answer confirmation’ to make sure the call is handled appropriately.

The Mitel components that enable DynamicExtension include Mitel Personal Ring Groups (PRG)and hot desking. Personal Ring Groups allow you toassign up to eight devices1 to participate in yourpersonal ring group which can be defined as agrouping of devices that can be enabled as aDynamic Extension. These numbers can be anyinternal extension number on the system or anynumber in your network of Mitel systems or ANYdirect dial number. This number could be your mobilenumber, your home number or any DID. For externalnumbers you would leverage the new feature calledexternal hot desking. The combination of personalring group and external hot desking result in thenew Dynamic Extension.

Additionally, a Mitel 3300 Communications Platform (ICP) system, or the same software, MitelCall Director, running on an industry standard Sun,IBM or HP server, could be added into an existingnon-Mitel PBX environment and serve as a gatewayto enable Dynamic Extension for those users.Effectively, through the combined use of a 3300 ICPconnected to an existing non-Mitel PBX with theinclusion of Dynamic Extension, the enterprise cannow turn on Mitel IP features without the need forinstallation of Q.Sig or DPNSS.

There are two new features included in the Series X release. The feature names are GroupPresence and Handoff.

Group Presence – Allows members of call groups such as hunt groups,ACD groups, Ring groups and Personal Ring groupsto make themselves absent or present in a group.Only members who are present in a group areoffered calls to that group.

The Handoff feature for Personal Ring Groups (PRGs) – Allows calls to be “pushed” or “pulled” betweengroup member devices; a push passes the call to thegroup, where it can be answered by any otherpresent group device. A pull takes an in-progress callaway from another member. To push a call to, or topull a call from, another member, you configure aHandoff key in the Multiline Set Key Assignmentform (see Programming, below). You can programany button, including Programmable Key Module(PKM) buttons, as a Handoff key.

The same key is used to push a call and to pull a call.If the Handoff key is pressed while on a call, the callis pushed. If the PRG member device is idle orlistening to dial tone, and there is an in-progress callon another member in the PRG, the call is pulled bypressing the Handoff Feature Access Key (FAK).

The voice path to a non-member device remainsconnected to the member device that initiated thehandoff until that device releases the call or anotherPRG member answers. If the pushing device staysconnected until the new device answers, the caller

1 Devices may include IP or non-IP phones, Mitel proprietary or non-proprietary, fixed or mobile phones, hard phones or softphones – effectively any device(hard phones must provide DTMF functionality)

hears a short break in audio when the call is pushedto the new device. If the pushing device releases thecall before the new device answers it, the callerhears ringback until another member device answers the call.

When a call is pulled, it connects to the pullingmember’s set and disconnects from the pulled-frommember’s set. The caller hears a short break in audiowhen the call is connected to the new device.

The caller does not hear “music on hold”. The call is not disconnected from the originating party until it is successfully connected to the party that pulled the call.

3. Ways to use Dynamic Extension Dynamic Extension can be used to:• Direct incoming calls to multiple devices inside or

outside of your system• Originate calls through your system to present a

single identity, extend Mitel IP-PBX features toyour mobile device or any external line

• Add Dynamic Extension to any legacy system

4. Business Continuity and Disaster RecoveryA key benefit for companies that deploy Mitelsolutions is the Mitel Communications Directorflexible deployment architecture. Most companieshave well defined disaster recovery and businesscontinuity plans. A typical Disaster Recovery plan will include a plan to have a subset of employeesreport to a collocation and occupy a desk with PSTN redirect to that location to keep the work flow moving.

Consider the following redundant data centerarchitecture and the high availability it wouldprovide to your enterprise; PSTN access, Mitel voice services, application data and storage could be load-shared between locations to protect againstcatastrophic outages at either location. Services canfailover between locations. This is generally referredto as geo-redundancy.

There are other scenarios that need to be consideredthat disrupt business work flow that have nothing todo with technology outage or a natural disaster thatprevent employees from getting into the office;situations such as terror attacks, police / hostage

situations, disease breakout, power outage orinclement weather. The Mitel solution would include Teleworker capabilities for phones deployed over broadband internet at home, Unified Communications / soft clients to make andreceive calls or log in as a contact center agent.

Dynamic Extension would give you to the ability tomake and receive calls no matter where you happento be as long as you have access to a mobile phoneor POTS line by simply logging from that line and onthe fly converting that number into your DynamicExtension. This can be done from a web based GUIor right from the device through a TUI should younot have internet access. Once logged in, any calls toyour office number route to where ‘you’ are and anycalls you make present your corporate identity andyou have access to all of your system features suchas internal dialing to your colleagues, ad-hocconference calling and transfer capabilities. This canall be done on any mobile device or any number inthe world with no client software required on themobile device.
