Cell DivisionMitosis
Reasons for MitosisThere are three main reasons
a.Growth b.Repair/Healingc. Asexual Reproduction
Cell DivisionOther cells divide rarely or never
Brain Cell – Nerve cell
Spinal Cord Cell- Nerve cell
Cardiac Cell (Heart Muscle)
Cell Division2 kinds of cell division:
1. Mitosis: division of somatic cells
(all body cell except sex cells – gametes)
1. Meiosis: creation of gametes
Sperm cells Human egg cell
Cell Division Vocabulary
diploid (2n) – a cell with 2 chromosome sets in each of its cells; all body (somatic) cells
haploid (n) – a cell with 1 chromosome set in each of its cells; all gametes (sperm, eggs)
MitosisMitosis produces two
genetically identical cells
Mitosis is referred to in the following stages:
1.Prophase
2.Metaphase
3.Anaphase
4.Telophase
InterphaseTechnically not part of MitosisCells are growingLong strings of DNA are messy and coiled
ProphaseIn nucleus:The chromosomes replicates, condense, visible and remain next to each otherIn cytoplasm:The spindle forms
chromatin
duplicatedchromosome
Draw Prophase
Prophase
Sister chromatidsCentromere
Centriole
Spindle fibers
Metaphase (meet in the middle)
Nucleus membranes breaks apart
Chromosomes line up at the equator of the cell
Spindle fiber interacts with the chromosomes by attaching to the centromeres
Centrioles migrate to opposite poles of the cell
Centriole
Spindle fibers
Draw Metaphase
Anaphase (apart)Chromosomes are separate into 2 genetically identical groups
(The spindle fibers pulls the chromosomes to opposite poles)
moved to the opposite ends of the spindle
Anaphase The spindle fibers
contract and the chromosomes are pulled to opposite poles
Draw Anaphase
TelophaseIn Telophase the nucleus actually
divides!
The chromosomes are at the poles of the cell
The nuclei membranes reforms around each sets of chromosomes(pinching the balloon in the middle)
Draw Telophase
Cytokinesis – dividing cytoplasm
In animal cells, a Cleavage Furrow forms and separates Daughter Cells
In plant cells, a Cell Plate forms and separates Daughter cells.
